7, 10, 14 or 21 night holiday abroad?

For 2 adults and two children under 8, which suits you best?

We usually do 14 nights, but looking at 21 nights for next year to make up for no holiday this year.

Unsure if it will be too much though?

How long is long enough for you?

We usually do 7 nights for European holidays, 14 nights for longer distances ie East Coast US, Canada, Middle East and 21 nights for long haul ie South America, South Africa or Far East. Makes it worth the longer flights.

i normally look at 1 week beach/resort holiday
2 weeks say USA but over a few places

21 is an odd time and tends to be about peak home sickness before it passes over again.

For a single site holiday I'd struggle to do more than 14 days (I'd struggle with 14 in most places!) Especially with children.

21 days travelling around is the ideal I think. I went away for 11 days earlier this year, and still stayed in 3 different places.

I never enjoyed 14 days in the same place. 10 days is perfect for me, flight time excluded.

If I were travelling to different places then I would probably prefer longer, but for one place 10 is optimal as long as there are interesting things to do. If its a beach bum affair, then that drops to 7 days (as otherwise I get horrendously bored).

It depends what you do, and what you like!

Holidays are always too short for me, so 21 days never ever feel that long, but it's booked for my taste.

21 days camping in the UK would be my idea of hell, it's all relative.

More than a few nights in a hotel resort is not my bag but a month or more either travelling around or in a villa in a beautiful place with a car to explore is amazing.

We had a guy at my work who did 21 day holidays. Always used to annoy everyone else that it was that long. He used to be shattered when he came back for a week after that too. I wouldn’t recommend if you like full on action all the time like his family did (played so many sports etc) but perhaps if it was more a mix of relax, culture, travel about a region it might work. Personally I think I’d only do 14 and then some time off at home.

Did 21 days to Florida. Perfect.
Other than that 10-14 days. Pref 10 as I like a few days between coming home and going to work.

I would say 21 days plus is great if travelling around a lot.

However, regardless of how this year pans out, I wouldn't be rushing to book any make up for the crap year for next year anytime soon. Unless you can afford to lose it?

Depends where you’re going. Typical beach type holiday in one place I’m not sure I’d like it for that long. We went to Mexico for 12 days last year and there was lots to do in the surrounding area. I was worried we could have done with staying longer but I was pretty much ready to come home, but could have happily done 14 days. Not sure I could have done another 9.

Somewhere with a couple of different destinations then yes. So something like USA and some different cities or national parks or even chuck a week in Florida in then yes. Australia and moving around different places then yes. Costa Rica, jungle, volcanoes and the Beach then yes. Thailand, do the north and the jungle and then the islands yes.

we've done this quite often, we have an adventure for a week, last time we went to Vietnam for a week then Thailand for 2 week beach holiday. We've done a month too, Cambodia, Burma then Thailand again for 2 weeks.

I'd be bored after 14 nights, no way would 21 be good in one chunk.

I like 10 days, long enough that you can see and so everything locally and still have relaxing time but not so long you get bored.

21 would be way too long. I find I get homesick after 10 days!
Depends on the location(s) and activities available though. We've realised Beach holidays are no longer for me and DH!

14days with kids would be perfect then maybe do a week elsewhere short break

1. I’m crap at holidays. It’s a very personal thing. I can manage “travelling” but 3 weeks in one place would send me potty. Don’t know why because I’m great at sitting about doing bugger all at home.

My DD starts getting jumpy after 10 days, so 14 is our max.

We always do 10 nights due to dp being self employed and having to factor unpaid leave at his busiest time of year. Next year we’re doing 14 but we’ll be staying two different locations to mix things up a bit

Personally I find a week a little short. All that packing, unpacking then as soon as I get into my holiday I'm thinking about repacking again. 10 or 14 days is perfect, Enough time between travelling to relax and enjoy the holiday. Enough time to have a good blend of sightseeing days and relaxing days.

I have done 21 days for a travelling far-afield, major adventure holiday. It was amazing but not really practical on a regular basis. I used to have a colleague who took a 6 week holiday every 5 years. She would go on a massive adventure. However she had no DC so more flexibility.

It depends what type of holiday. Beach holiday in Europe, 7 nights. Caribbean or somewhere long haul, 10 nights. An adventure type holiday where you travel to a lot of different parts of the country, 14-21 nights.

I think it depends what you're doing. Lying on a sunlounger resort type holiday my limit is 7 days, maybe 10 at a push. Staying somewhere with the option of a mix of activities and day trips I could probably do 2 weeks in one base. Any longer and I'd need to do some travelling around, have a mix of activities and types of things to see and do.
I think it also depends on your job and the role you have. If i'm off work no one else does my role and work while I'm away so the longer i'm off the more backlog there is to come back to and it starts to be counter-productive to the benefits gained while away. If you have the sort of job where you pick up where you left off and don't have an inbox full of hundreds of emails then I would be more inclined to go for longer.
Also, how well do your children get on with each other, are you good at spending time as just a family or do you all need some time in your own space, with other kids to play with etc? I guess lockdown will probably have worked these out!

We travel a lot but have no DC.

For short haul (Med) my ideal is 10 - feels so much longer than 7 without using up too much holiday.

For long haul minimum 14 days, ideally 21. We never stay in the same place for long haul though, normally do more backpacker type trips where we move every 3-5 days between different locations.

I think 21 days in 2-3 different locations would be great, but all in one place might get a bit dull. On the other hand you could find it super relaxing and kind of pretend you we’re locals - I think self catering rather than a hotel would be better if you spent 21 days in the same place as you have more flexibility over food etc.

Where are you thinking of going? Would you consider changing location between a couple of different towns/locations?

We have a mobile home in France, a looooong way down so we aim for 3 1/2 - 4 weeks to get over the drive.

We also have family in america and again, prefer longer break usually 21 so we can see them and then go somewhere new for the actual holiday part.

We did 11 nights last summer to greece for a change and it wasn't long enough.
