AIBU?

Why haven't they been arrested yet? Why?

The officers who murdered and were accessories to the murder of George Floyd. Can anyone give me a logical reason for it? I've been up all night watching footage of the riots. There look to be upwards of 150 officers stood outside Chauvin's house protecting him and his family. Minneapolis is on fire. Why not arrest the murderer? It's clear as day that he murdered Floyd in cold blood. As a black woman, with black brothers, and black friends and family across America, I feel sick. I can't sleep. I can't stop crying. I don't agree with the violence that has happened across minneapolis but I feel the rioters' pain. I can't make sense of this.

The one who did it allegedly has form for this and has been involved in previous in custody deaths

He got away with them all obviously

Has the governor appealed for calm yet? If they arrest him now he will be destroyed in custody unless they protect him in custody too

I really don't know. If they weren't cops they'd have been arrested already.

It is a scandal the way black people are treated by police in the US. I also wonder why Amy Cooper was not arrested when she lied to the police and said an African American had threatened her. She was clearly trying to get him shot just for asking her to put a leash on her dog. In Britain and the Scandinavian countries you can get prosecuted if you make up stories about other people to get them in trouble with the police.

Oh sorry OP.

I also don’t understand why they haven’t been arrested. Angry

I feel the same OP. Why are they getting away with this? Why do some people think that it is ok to behave like that towards another human being. George Floyd was murdered and his killers are allowed to get away with it.

Well a few reasons. It’s all procedural delay:

In Minnesota, after arrest you have only 36hrs to arraign an accused before a judge to determine if enough evidence to put them on trial. If there isn’t, you have to release them.

So, currently, the video evidence is of injury to Mr Floyd but they’d also need the autopsy/medical examiner to declare a cause of death as caused by the police actions in order to arrest anyone on charge of manslaughter or murder.

If they arrested the police now, they only have enough evidence to charge them with illegal use of force on Mr Floyd. So, because they want to charge them with murder if they can, they have to wait for the medical examiners cause of death report.

They can’t really arrest them now in the US and then “upgrade” the charges because you can only be charged and put on trial once for the same “crime.” The relatives would only be able to file a civil suit of wrongful death. The US legal system is really in need of overhaul.

Looks like in the USA you can be practically murdered in the street, with eyewitnesses, by the very people who should be preventing murder.

Mind-boggling.

It doesn't stop Sad this seems to be the daily reality even for black children:

Trigger warning for violence, no deaths or blood though.

when she lied to the police and said an African American had threatened her.

I thought Amy Cooper didn’t go past threatening to call the police and lie to them. In the video, she doesn’t actually get beyond holding her phone? If she had carried out her threat, it would have been illegal as a false allegation

I honestly don't think they intend to arrest them/him. They already have footage from different angles showing George Floyd being murdered, but that's doesn't seem to be enough. It makes me feel sick to my stomach.

I would imagine that they will need to ensure that the case is watertight. He isn't going anywhere and is unlikely to run so they bide their time.

However, if this man has killed other prisoners using his police powers to avoid arrest is it possible he has been killing on purpose - possibly a serial killer?

Yanbu also op, it is a disgrace and so tragic for poor George and his family 😔.

It’s an absolute disgrace. They’re going on about how he has been fired. He is on camera murdering a man. He should be immediately arrested and put into normal prison.

@MaxNormal that video has actually made me cry. I am absolutely disgusted at what the "police" get away with in America.

I'm sure there was a video recently of police hand cuffing and removing a 6 year old black girl from school. It was awful.

It's just shocking. Outrageous. How is this sort of thing still happening.

I have the tiniest of hopes that it's because they're assembling enough evidence to really throw the book at him, for example to charge him with murder instead of manslaughter. But still, he should be in jail by now.

We should also ask why the protesters are getting tear gassed and shot with rubber bullets when white men with guns are allowed to protest however they want.

It is shocking. I lived in the US for a few years and the police brutality is out of control. Everyone is afraid of the police, even white people because they too get killed while unarmed/doing nothing. The police do especially target minorities, so they are rightly even more afraid.

The US military give the US police weapons, equipment, drones, vehicles and so on. So I’d literally see armoured personnel carriers (like tanks but no gun turret, but a 50 calibre machine gun and gunner on top), rolling down the street to a “disturbance” at a home in what is an ok neighbourhood. Then police would come out the armoured vehicle and they are wearing full tactical gear the same as an Army soldier would wear.

It was a shock for me because my entire expectation of American police was based on 1980s shows with bungling, tolerant sheriffs giving people warnings and helping lost children find their parents.

@PlanDeRaccordement the recording I saw showed her calling the police and saying she was being threatened by an African American man and to send help.
It’s turned my stomach.
I honestly don’t understand what’s wrong with people. How can you treat someone like that? Someone you don’t even know?
I’m starting to feel stupidly naive. I just don’t understand. I’m not slagging off the yanks but there must be an institutional or cultural racism that’s underlying this. I’m certainly not saying the UK is without fault. We have our own disgusting behaviours to be ashamed of but it does seem less prevalent.
Or am I just in a bubble of white privilege and haven’t noticed what’s on my doorstep? Blush
