AIBU?

To dye my hair

Hair is half blonde from bleach done professionally and half natural brown, as it’s grown out. It was balayage so looks like a dipdye as opposed to bad roots, but I feel like a teenager with a dip dye. And it’ll be at least a month til hairdressers open.

WIBU to dye my hair myself or am I going to mess it up? I know I must ‘fill’ the blonde with red tones first, before applying the brown dye.

If you're not fussed about going back lighter you could just remember to do it carefully so you don't end up with green ends.
Box dyes are notoriously difficult to remove and lighten are are often darker in real life than they are in the boxes

You can put a warm shade semi permanent over the blonde first then your chosen colour. Or wait.

No dont do it. I've had mine highlighted blonde for year. Twice I listened to my sister and used a home dye like she does. It looked horrible and fake. I wouldnt bother, I'd wait until they open. In fact I was due to have mine done in may but will wait until they reopen.

I’m normally a (dyed) redhead and I did mine today with a box dye as I literally couldn’t stand the two inches of brown/grey roots a second longer.

Does it look as good as it does when my hairdresser does it? No. Does it look better than it did this morning? Yes! So I’m glad I went for it.

Blonde can be tricky though. I watched a few YouTube tutorials before I did mine, which might be an idea for you as well?

Box dye is really hard to get off so expect to pay for 2 or 3 salon visits to correct it

I threw on a couple of boxes of brown box dye over my bleach and it looks great. Definitely not a difficult thing to achieve if you want to go back to your natural colour.
I'd already attempted bleaching roots which was a disaster but the brown dye worked like a dream.

Use a temporary wash out dye? My hair is fair but has grey roots so I did that root dye thing from the supermarket and it looks fine(really needs trimmed though but waiting for hairdressers to reopen after some past home cutting mistakes Grin)

I have exactly the same hair and has just gone dark back to my normal colour for the time being

I’m thinking of asking dh to do my blonde streaks

I would go for a darkest blonde. Paint down to the blonde and for the last 15 mins comb it through the blonde bit to even it out.
If you go brown then a second colour the hairdresser may not be able to repair it.
Don't add a red first.

If your going brown all over dye the ends first. It might go green though.
