AIBU?

AIBU to be angry about the lowering of our food standards?

Whilst we are distracted by the Cummings story, this seems to have been slipping through unnoticed. I don’t want to eat the shit that Americans eat and I don’t want decent British food to become a luxury item. The DUP are supporting it, despite NI being a land of farmers. www.thelondoneconomic.com/news/full-list-of-mps-who-voted-to-lower-our-food-standards-during-the-covid-pandemic/26/05/

YANBU but I imagine that a lot of things are going to be slipped through.

Report

YANBU, but this is what people voted for last December. They were told this would happen. Now they're going to have to live with the consequences. I only feel sympathy for those who did not vote for this government.

Food labelling in terms of origin will also be going so we won't even be able to escape eating this crap.

I read this today and I'm really angry too.
Is there anything we can do?

Report
Tigersneeze · 27/05/2020 12:26

but it was so very very clearly obvious that this will be the case with Brexit. How can anyone be surprised? Remainers have been warning about this consequence for more than 4 years. Its too late now

It’s horrible. Will there be any way of avoiding the food that’s not fit for human consumption under the current law?

I can’t forgive the the people who voted for this.

If you voted remain YANBU but if you voted leave YABU as this is what you voted for and were warned about

Whilst I agree that the blame lies with those who voted for this absolutely horrendous government, that doesn’t help the people who didn’t who are being dragged through it all too!

Could be good for vegetarianism/veganism. It makes me so angry that this is what lots of people were warning about and brexiters dismissed it as scaremongering nonsense. Surely Caroline Lucas voted by mistake?

But this is what Brexit was about - how does anyone think trade deals are struck? There has to be some give and take somewhere. Chlorine-washed chicken with fries.

Report
Honeyroar · 27/05/2020 12:33

It’s horrible. The standards in post Brexit Britain are slipping already, and it’s not fully happened yet.

Report
Mistlewoeandwhine · 27/05/2020 12:38

I’m thinking that we will have to eat a lot more vegan food (lactose intolerance in the family) and see meat as a rare treat, only getting expensive local produce. Does this affect crops too ie pesticides?

I was scoffed at by Brexiters when I pointed this out on Brexit threads.

LOL! Brexit is about taking back control. If our government tries to lower our standards we can vote them out! No, of course the US-UK trade deal won’t be bad for us! Stop scaremongering! Why are the Remoaners still moaning?

Report
pointythings · 27/05/2020 12:44

Caroline Lucas voted for an amendment that would have retained food standards. She did not vote in favour of the Bill.

Thighmageddon · 27/05/2020 12:44

I'm audibly sighing about this.

Us remoaners were told we were being very silly and spouting untruths.

It was inevitable once Brexit and the last election happened, despite promises we wouldn't be sold down the river. We were promised the NHS wasn't up for grabs, too, but I'm more worried then ever about that.

We should be able to avoid manky US chicken and hormone-enriched beef by reading labels carefully, but the poorest in society will be eating it by default. I have a local butcher who can tell me which farm my beef is from and practically knows the beast's name and eye colour, but what if the competition puts the farmer and the butcher out of business? Once we're out priced from producing our own food we are vulnerable to price rises and sancymtions of all sorts.

I live in a farming area yet my (Tory) MP's name is on the list. 😢

Thighmageddon · 27/05/2020 12:51

NearlyGranny my MPs name is on that list too but he's a brexiteer so no surprise there.

This is one of the main things brexit was about, so hardly a surprise. And yes, I am very angry about it.

Report
VladmirsPoutine · 27/05/2020 13:32

I think due to obvious reasons currently a lot of brexit is on the back burner but I think if people are outraged at this they're in for a rough ride. Reducing food standards is just the start of it.

Imagine that we (an island nation) have the highest death toll in Europe, our doctors and HCPs were under equipped wrt PPEs and care home deaths. Given how incompetent the government have been during this pandemic, Brexit is going to be a shit show.

Doesn’t America import a lot of its fast food meat from China? God forbid

Report
TheRoyallingStones · 27/05/2020 14:02

Is anyone remotely surprised?

This is what the brexiters voted for in 2016, this is what the Boris supporters voted for last year.

And remainers were shouted down when they tried to warn people

Report
Inoneminute · 27/05/2020 14:08

I am angry about it and know it's just the beginning but we knew it was going to happen after the election result. It's what Brexit is for, to get rid of all those nasty inconvenient EU regulations that protect ordinary people and slow the rate at which the rich get richer. That's what people wanted.

Report
Mistlewoeandwhine · 27/05/2020 15:55

Does anyone have info on what the details of the food standards relate to? I was thinking meat but then, if we start getting eg American strawberries, I know they use pesticides that the EU have banned due to them being carcinogenic.

I’m furious too - will have to start buying meat from a farm. Their animal welfare is much lower than ours too. Grrr! If anyone has an idea about what we can do, I’m all ears!

Report
Pepperwort · 27/05/2020 23:25

Angry, yes, but this is what that vote meant. Geopolitics always meant that we are either in the EU with a strong voice in what's happening to it - or doing exactly what we're told to do by the USA. Of course we'll be sold out. This is just the start.

Report
ViciousJackdaw · 27/05/2020 23:29

I think this is the push I needed to pack meat in altogether. I'm a remainer btw. I can't even find much joy in the fact that two Bacons and a Bone voted for this. Even a Morrissey voted for dodgy meat. Perhaps the most appropriate voter was Skidmore as that's exactly what we can expect.
