AIBU?

To be pissed off at the Muslim community?

Redolent · 26/05/2020 21:43

The vast majority of my Muslim neighbours and family members have had visitors over for Eid. Not just one household, but a steady stream of them. My mum, who’s vulnerable and has pretty much kept to herself over the last couple of months, has mixed with four different households since Sunday. Her response is ‘Well they turned up/travelled to say Eid Mubarak. They’re right on our doorstep. I couldn’t possibly turn them away without serving them food’.

Media accounts of how Muslim communities life in extended family networks miss the point that these ties are not simply dependent on proximity but are based on entrenched feelings of social obligation.

Bearing in mind that the BAME community is more at risk anyway, I’m pissed off at the Muslims I know, fearful of a second spike, and hoping that the cites they live in get locked the fuck down again before they all get sick.

No wonder people are not following the ‘loose guidlines’. Didn’t you get the memo? May be the Muslim community did? We are not following any rules anymore. It’s all guidance only and you are fully within your rights to follow your own instincts. Smile

YABU if you think it’s just the Muslim community - from the Jews in NYC to the Christians in the southern states- many religious groups think they are exempt from the lockdown.
Your mum needs to look after herself though if she’s vulnerable- I’d direct your anger there as you can’t influence the others.

Sorry phones playing up.

What I was going to say was to be honest I'm pissed off with all of the people breaking rules, not just the Muslim community although my neighbours are Muslims and haven't left the house neither has anyone come in from what I've seen/heard so it's not the whole Muslim community.

Report your neighbours if you’ve seen them having gatherings.

I'm certain that if the lockdown had happened in December, there'd be people visiting their families for Christmas left, right, and centre.

People will decide for themselves what matters most now. The 'guidance' is unenforceable and illogical.

I said the same thing today, pictures all over SM of people enjoying Eid with their entire extended families. The biggest joke of it is that all of these people have been slagging off everyone else who's broken rules / the gov for the last few months. It's the hypocrisy of it that irks me most.

My friend lives with her 79 year old mother (friend has immune system issues and a serious illness, her mother has a few major health issues too. ) they had several of her siblings over to celebrate Eid along with the siblings spouses and kids.
Given my friend's health and that of her mum, I think that it was a bad move. I just hope they stay well.

No offence but people of all communities are breaking lockdown- especially white people ( if you’re white). I’m in my early 20s and I’ve lost count of the amount of people I know that have flagrantly broken lockdown and had people over (social media posts)

Well, I'm Jewish and I can assure you that many Jewish communities have ignored restrictions too - as have lots of Christian communities, including in the UK. That said, my super rich 100+ acres of land owning white neighbours have been coming and going back and forth between each others houses, baking cakes and swapping them around, popping over for some eggs, meeting up for drinks, etc since the very beginning of lockdown. I saw one couple clearly going out all dressed up in the car, obviously going for a dinner party somewhere, the other week.

Yes. My family are Muslim and I'm angry with them too. I literally got ridiculed because I wouldn't go there.

Well when the political advisers who make the rules don't even stick to them, why should anyone else?

tttigress · 26/05/2020 21:56

Well it is your mum's decision to shield, and obviously you telativ s should have called ahead.

But we cannot spend the rest of our lives alone inside, I think this lockdown is naturally coming to an end.

Tread carefully.

Why aren't you angry with the rest of the community for doing conga lines on VE Day? This thread smells extremely racist and I'm not here for it.

By any chance, do you read the Daily Mail?

That would be all Muslims, everywhere? Every single Muslim family? I assume that they were simultaneously on the beach in their bikinis and not social distancing?

Your mum is an adult and if she chooses to entertain people instead of saying no, then that is on her. But is is racist to tar all Muslims with your narrow-minded brush. It's also racist to assume they all live in cities.

You want to take a long hard look at yourself before judging other people.

I find the level of people spying on each other quite scary, the Stazi would be proud of some Brits in this Lockdown period.

Well you need to angry at every type of community then. It's not just Muslims breaking lock down rules. You can't just direct your hate at one community for something A LOT of people are doing. Fgs. Hmm

I do @DressingGownofDoom but I have a child with disabilities whose considered higher risk and a husband with underlying health issues,I see your point but I'm not stupid enough not to follow the rules regardless other Dominic Cummings choose to do.
