Can I move my Dad?

My dad is due to move in with us for a few months while he gets his new place ready (already his completed late feb).
He currently lives 300miles away in his old place and is due to complete on the sale on the next week or two which he has sold with furniture. This has already been delayed he was supposed to complete and move up 3rd April.

I have a big people carrier car, and I could move all his stuff up in one trip, he would need to make about 5 round trips in his car
We did have a van hired which my brother was due to drive up this week but the company has cancelled it as it would involved my brother staying in my dads new place overnight and driving back the next morning which is against govt guidelines therefore been cancelled

I usually do the drive in 6 hours, would it be allowed if I say set off 5am arriving about 11am have a 2/3hr sleep at my dads load car up, and set off about 4pm arriving back about 10pm. My dad would be moving up and in with us within a few days following this. My dad has been alone in his household since lockdown.

Would I get into trouble for doing this if stopped and questioned by the police etc?

If no other constraints, go the day before and split the trip. You are combining the households anyway.

To be honest... if Cummings can do all he’s done, then I can’t see how anyone could tell you off for supporting your dad and helping him move in with you.

If the police stop you just tell them you're checking your eyesight. Hmm

Seriously, it's fine. Go for it.

Posted too early, she had to go down the previous day so you should he fine staying overnight rather than pushing yourself to do this in one day

Ah I’m glad I’m getting these responses, it was going to be Sunday I would go down, hopefully after Thursday we will have a bit more clarity.
Tbh I’m looking forward to some time by myself in the car without the kids!

Yes I'd go - but would leave longer for sleep so at least one overnight stay. He is combining with you so no issue there I think.

Here you are, OP, you've got government backing with this.

I would stay the night - road safety is more of an issue than covid at this stage.

You're combining households and essential house moves are permitted so there's no reason why not in the government guidelines. Obviously if the car hasn't be used for a decent journey for some time it's especially important to check things like tyre pressure before leaving to reduce the chance of needing assistance.

Ignore the unnecessary sarcastic posts and look at your own situation . Are either of you in the high vunerable group and have you all been covid aware the last few weeks ? In other words establish the risks to your father in your decision making

All the rules and guidelines are on gov uk . Including combining households and what are considered exceptional circumstances . Even if people chose to ignore them for political reasons .
