To hope this racist woman loses her job

twitter.com/melodyMcooper/status/1264965252866641920?s=19. Was appalled to see this video on Twitter - a guy in Central park, NYC, who was birdwatching, politely asked a woman to put her dog on the lead as per the regulation in that part of the park. He started filming it as she got abusive and called the cops, to say that she (white) and her dog were being threatened by an African-American man and could they send the police (as we know this can often result in a shooting). All the while she was holding her dog up by dangling it from its collar, half strangling it. The man left and his sister put the video on Twitter, resulting in the racist dog strangler being identified very quickly... she has a high powered job with an insurance company. The animal shelter took back the dog, and her company says she is on 'administrative leave' hopefully meaning she will get fired. I was really shocked and dismayed that such open racism is still going on, even though she was being filmed! Surely she must lose her job at least, what company would want to be linked to something like this?

Its terrible but she had leashed her dog so he shouldn't have continued to film her. She will lose her job, these things only ever end one way.

@workshy44 he said thank you and stopped filming after the dog was put on the lead...

She had hold of the dog and was going to leash him. He escalated it by filming her and that is when she got agitated. She was completely out of order and she was trying to get him in serious trouble by obviously completely fabricating the threat posed by him but I don't like this idea of everyone filming people and putting it out for the world to see.. a snapshot if an event. If he hadn't been filming her she would have leashed the dog and that would have been the end of it

@workshy44 "If he hadn't been filming her she would have leashed the dog and that would have been the end of it"

That's one hell of a crystal ball you have there.

The animal shelter didn't "take back" the dog.

She returned the dog.

I wonder what her side of the story is?

And from further reports from this he was also calling the dog over to him with treats.

When you dig deeper on this neither come out of this as saints.

Yes she was worse than him.

‘I’m going to tell them there’s an African American man threatening my life’

She knows those are the kinds of words that lead to African American men being shot by the police. She wants him to be frightened of the power she wields over him because of her white privilege. She is weaponising white woman’s tears to scare and subdue him, when he wasn’t threatening her, was asking her not to approach him, and was speaking in a calm and polite way.

She absolutely deserves to lose her job. What she did was despicable.

@zscaler exactly. This is how white people have been operating for years. She deserves to lose her job. As for those saying..'ooh I don't agree with filming that makes him as bad as her' what rot.
The filming might get people to change their behaviour.
No wonder so many black men suffer from ptsd.

We only see a very small snapshot here I wonder what's happened before filming started?

Report
Lockheart · 26/05/2020 11:10

@FrippEnos yes, in the interview the man says he keeps dog treats to get dog owners to leash their dogs, as (rightly) dog owners don't like the idea of strangers feeding their dog.

The fact he was trying to give the dog treats is neither here nor there.

Woman breaks rules by having dog off lead. Woman makes race-based threats to man who asks her to keep dog on lead.

In no way is the man filming this in the wrong. Filming in public is perfectly legal, even if people don't like it.

I don't understand why he was filming her. She seems scared. What she said was awful.

I think many people feel threatened and get pissed off when you start filming them without their consent, these days it's so easy to make someone elses life hell by 'exposing' them. This might trigger people to become very nasty too as a response, although I am not justifying her behavior.
As pp said, neither of them are saints here.
I think she has already been punished by getting her reputation damaged by all of this, there is no need for her to be sacked as well because God knows after this tweet and with upcoming economic depression she might never find another job again, at least not in the near future. In the US that can easily lead to becoming homeless, I wouldn't wish that on anyone.

If I was in his position I would be filming too.

All those people saying "neither side are saints" are displaying exactly the kind of mindset (racism at worst, total obliviousness at best) that led trump to say there were bad people on both sides of those Charlottesville murders.

There is only one person in the wrong here and it's the woman who broke the rules and then made racially-aggravated threats.

And why was he trying to call the dog over to him,we are in the middle of a pandemic I always walk my dog on a,lead and social.distance but do get irritated by people trying to pet her, she's a very cute and friendly beagle and while racism is never excusable it's frightening that the police in America have a shoot first ask questions later mentality because of someone's skin colour

Lockheart

the point is that if all he did was ask her to put the dog on a lead then yes.No problem, but he didn't.

She asked him to stop filming.
She asked him to not feed her dog.

She was in the wrong for reporting him to the police.

He was wrong for exacerbating the situation.

Was she more wrong, yes, because the end result of her doing this could have catastrophic results for him.

And you can hardly blame him for filming when time and time again in America, black men are killed by the police or by white vigilantes and there are no repercussions for the murderer because they claim to be acting in self defence.

Look at Ahmaud Arbery - he was hunted down and shot by two white men just because he was jogging in their neighbourhood and they thought that was suspicious. Those men faced no charges until video footage was released, showing that they intercepted and murdered Ahmaud.

Filming the white people who threaten them is one of the few things black people can do in America to preserve their own safety and challenge the narrative that they are behaving in a threatening or dangerous way, and therefore were somehow deserving of the violence done to them.

If the police had attended this incident while both of them were still there, this man would (assuming he wasn’t shot before he could talk to the police) have needed that video to prove that the woman was lying when she said an African American man was threatening her life. There is simply no way the police would have believed him over her without that evidence.

Absolutely no need for her to do the African American man ploy, she knows what that means, you’d have to be bloody stupid to not know!!

They are both in the wrong here. He was trying to coax the dog over with treats. But was he trying to do this to show her that her dog isn't going to stay by her all the time? I don't get filming things but I suppose if your an African American its probably better to get proof because I can guess who the police would believe. Maybe he has had the same confrontation in that area and that's why he brings treats? Incase the dog gets aggressive? Supposedly it's a nature reserve and you aren't allowed dogs off the lead.

As soon as she called the police and told them she was being threatened by an African American she crossed the line. The majority of people know what can happen when you make reports like that, and who are they going to believe? Thats how people end up dead. All she had to do was put her dog on a leash and walk away, I am surprised that she didn't as soon as he started filming? She will probably lose her job and then do interviews apologising like all the other ones.

That was chilling.

I don't like the idea of men going around filming women but this is America, where getting black people getting shot by the cops is an ever present danger, so I'd probably do the same in his place.

And of course, she was strangling that dog.

MNs insidious racism is showing again. I'm going to bow out of this thread, because it will go exactly the same way every other thread does where a black man is gunned down in the street or choked to death by the police; somehow the black man must always be to blame in some way.
