Hi all,

I know there are bigger things going on in the world right now but I'm looking for a wee bit of advice!

Our bins are emptied on a three weekly cycle, we are a larger family of 6 and we recycle everything so we have always managed the bin cycle no problems with just an extra run to the tip come Christmas with extra cardboard and paper. The kids are well aware of how to recycle so all good.

As we are all at home a lot more obviously we have extra rubbish but still I am able to put bins On kerbside with lids fully closed as requested by the council no issues there. Every bin day for the 'general waste' black bin for the past two months someone is coming along and dumping huge black bags on the top of our bin leaving the lid lying open. Our local authority are very strict on not taking extra bin lids being closed over and to be honest right now why should they have to touch others waste.

How do I stop this? I am risking being left with my bin for a further 3 weeks and then we obviously would not manage and our tips aren't open yet (Scotland). Last time I actually waited till late on and put them out about half hour before lorry came, went back inside and made a coffee then on coming back into front room looked and low and behold someone's rubbish on bin, it's not about someone adding, because if I had space it wouldn't be an issue but why should I risk being under pressure of having bins left unemptied because of someone else's rubbish.

I don't want to start a pissing row with my neighbours but how would you stop this?

Thank you

Sounds like you need a bin lock Angry

Get a bin lock off Amazon. You use a key to open the lid but the lid opens automatically when the refuse team lift it on the lorry.

Put gloves on, remove the bag. Leave it. Not your problem.

Get a gravity bin lock off Amazon.

Didn't know about those locks will have a look just now thank you.

It seems so trivial I know but I'm getting irritated at the thought I could end up in a mess over someone else's rubbish Angry

A bin lock is a good idea. But I'd be waiting near my bin because I'm a sod and catch the twat in the act. That way you know where to return the rubbish in future.

Bin lock, and a camera. Set up the camera (a trail camera would do the job) and put the bin lock on.

Then you can watch them try to open the bin Grin and see what they do next, in case they leave the bag behind. It will enable you to take it back to their house and leave it there.

They seem to be waiting for your bin if they added extra in that short time. Next time I'd put them out late, fake going back and keep an eye on the bin if you can out of sight. Then you can catch them in the act with an "Oi! Get your own bin!"

@tealandteal that's exactly what I said to my mum it must be someone close by because they've actually waited on me putting the bin out last time. Feels daft getting annoyed at it but I think it's a bit cheeky too!

Yep bin lock, they're gravitational so open when tipped by the bin lorry.
Bin interferers move fast! We have someone that brings our bin in, even when I'm in, I've never seen them! They always put it back where it belongs too, even when I rearrange my bin storage!

Tbh I'd actually put my bin out in the morning then watch it all morning to see who it is!

Are you small enough to hide in bin and jump out when they lift the lid?

Gravity lock, stop the fucker in their tracks! Our previous neighbour used to put things actually on top of our closed bin. There is a tip a 5 minute drive away both her and her husband drive and were early 50’s and active. Her bin was always open at a 46 degree angle. I think they didn’t recycle!

I have the same problem. I can't stop people dumping stuff as I've left for work before the bin lorry comes. Last week someone dumped a bag in my bin after they'd been emptied, but before I pulled my bin in Angry

Get gloves and open the bag. Check for anything identifying and once you find an address, go to tip the open bag in their garden. Wink

Security camera.
Or sit out and watch it every time.
