My baby is 10 days old, and I'm a first time mum.
We live in my husband's family house, which also houses his brother and sister in law, plus their two teenage children.
The house is large enough that we have our own separate living spaces, but the kitchen is shared and we're expected to sit and eat altogether every night for dinner.
Up until recently, this has been fine as we've all been self isolating as one household during the pandemic, but a few days ago, my sister in law and her two kids visited her mother, who lives locally, and stayed the night. Her mother has also not been social distancing either and has seen other family members too from outside her household.
I now longer feel comfortable joining everyone in our house for dinner in the evenings and have stayed away the past few nights to protect myself and my newborn baby, but am I overreacting and being too protective, or am I doing the right thing to protect my baby? I don't want to completely isolate myself and cause any issues/friction with the in-laws or come across as being rude, but I dont want to risk the health of my newborn or myself either.
