Ettiquette question (very trivial)

Name changed as it's so trivial and not the sort of thing I normally post.

When I was at university a few years ago, I went to view a house with a view to potentially moving in the following year. I had seen it advertised by two girls who I didn't know, and was met by the one I had spoken to on the phone when I arrived.

It wasn't something I thought about at the time, but she was wearing a beanie hat over her hair. Something reminded me of her today and it got me thinking whether it was slightly rude? If it was, I'm not bothered, just curious as to what others might think.

LakeTittyHaHa Thu 21-May-20 14:58:26

Why would her wearing a beanie hat be rude?

Cosyblanky Thu 21-May-20 14:59:07

I think it would be considered rude not to remove a hat when inside yes.

Drivingdownthe101 Thu 21-May-20 14:59:20

Err... what?

HollowTalk Thu 21-May-20 14:59:57

She was in her own home, ffs. It's rude of you to judge, not for her to wear a hat.

UnfinishedSymphon Thu 21-May-20 15:00:07

A few years ago someone wore a hat and you're worried if it was rude.

Jesus fucking Christ, there's some absolutely ridiculous shite on here lately.

PelicanPuffin Thu 21-May-20 15:00:16

Because I've heard some people consider it rude to wear hats indoors, especially in front of guests.

Doyouwantanothercuppa Thu 21-May-20 15:00:21

Is lockdown getting to you?

Drivingdownthe101 Thu 21-May-20 15:00:52

Maybe ‘some’ people do consider it rude, but why on earth does it matter?

Aquamarine1029 Thu 21-May-20 15:01:00

She was wearing a beanie hat in her own home. How could that possibly be rude? What could be offensive about a beanie hat? She didn't answer the door naked, ffs.

OmgThereAreNoPlanesAboveMeNow Thu 21-May-20 15:01:07

I think it would be considered rude not to remove a hat when inside yes.

Women don't have to remove hat indoors if it's part of the outfit (which I guess usually is).

And...
Wtf, OP😂

angelalaland Thu 21-May-20 15:01:16

It is trivial. I am a complete scruff bag so am happy with people wearing whatever they like in any situation!

Ragwort Thu 21-May-20 15:01:21

It was a few years ago and you are thinking about it today? You must be seriously bored in lockdown grin. Weren’t beanie hats quite fashionable a few years ago so it might have been more of a thing to wear them all the time?

ClaudiaWankleman Thu 21-May-20 15:01:22

It wasn't rude.

PelicanPuffin Thu 21-May-20 15:01:32

It doesn't matter, I'm just curious.

NameChange84 Thu 21-May-20 15:01:57

About 50 years ago it was seen as rude for a man to wear a hat indoors but never women. In fact the rule was for men to remove hats when at church and women to wear hats.

I cringe a bit at the idea of you thinking it was rude. A lot of people I know have worn hats or some sort of a head covering for religious reasons, alopecia, cancer etc. It’s really not seen as rude to wear a hat indoors these days.

Kittykat93 Thu 21-May-20 15:02:51

Some days I wonder why I come on here to read this shit... grin

UnfinishedSymphon Thu 21-May-20 15:02:56

Maybe she was cold, maybe she has alopecia, maybe she just likes to wear a hat. Rude my arse.

I've got a baseball cap on backwards currently and I'm sitting in my office working from home, am I being rude?

PelicanPuffin Thu 21-May-20 15:03:10

Something triggered the memory and it reminded me of things I've heard/read. I wasn't bothered then or now.

Youngatharte Thu 21-May-20 15:03:13

Women don’t need to remove hats inside. That only applies to men

TforTartan Thu 21-May-20 15:04:09

Traditionally it was considered polite for men to remove hats indoors, particularly in church. Women didn't, though.

But I don't think beanie hats are what they had in mind - they're inherently informal and don't really come into the field of etiquette as such! If she were actually rude, as in insulting, or chewed gum with her mouth open while talking to you, or something like that, that would be rude. Not wearing a woolly hat indoors.

TforTartan Thu 21-May-20 15:04:33

Cross-posted with Youngatharte.

wink1970 Thu 21-May-20 15:04:56

Ignore the rudeness, OP; most of us are reminiscing or thinking about daft stuff due to boredom.

A bit odd to wear a hat indoors, yes.

Guardsman18 Thu 21-May-20 15:05:23

What was your Uni course?!

PelicanPuffin Thu 21-May-20 15:06:01

Thank you @wink1970. Question was just out of curiosity.
