Morning everyone I’m just looking for some advice I have this really sore and dry rash on my face under my bottom lip I have no idea what’s causing it I don’t use any creams on my face it appeared a few weeks ago it’s happened before and it just disappeared after a while and left a scar on my face but now it’s back in the same exact place and I have no idea what’s causing it. The only things that have changed are I’ve started drinking more water and I’m on my period. I have attached a picture of the rash any advice or help is greatly appreciated thank you.

Is it warm? Itchy? Rashes are usually contact (allergy to something) or viral, but it could also be stress related given the timing.

I originally thought impetigo, but that would not go of it's own accord. So I really don't know, sorry. Hope you get some help here.

@Toilenstripes it’s not warm but it’s sore and dry it doesn’t itch either my skin just keeps flaking off. I could be more stressed than I think I am I have been indoors since the lockdown happened.

@ElizabethMainwaring I’ve had impertigo before on my hands it was years ago I can’t really remember what it looked like. Thank you 😊.

When you say you've ha d it before. Do you remember if it was around about the time of your previous period. I'm just wondering if the rashes could be connected to your period. Could it be the onset of the menopause.

Impetigo is weepy rather than flakey.

@awwlookatmybabyspider I can’t remember if it was round the time of my period I hope it isn’t the menopause I’m only 30. The only other thing I could think of is eczema but it’s not itchy.

Just a thought, have you been wearing face masks? (Or a scarf over your face?)

@squishybones no I haven’t worn anything on my face. The only other thing that has been near that part of my face is my husbands beard but his beard has never made my face come out in a rash before.

I get eczema on my face and it doesn’t look like that at all.

Ring the gp for an video consultation? I did that for a skin condition for my dd this week and it worked really well.

@lemontreebird thank you I never thought about something like that I will look in to it.

@doowop20 ok that rules that out then. Thank you I will do that see what they think it could be.

Sourced from MedicalNews
Perioral dermatitis
Perioral dermatitis is a skin condition that forms a rash around the mouth. It can also spread to the skin around the nose and eyes.

Symptoms of perioral dermatitis include:

a red, scaly, or bumpy rash
redness and inflammation around the mouth
mild itching or burning
The symptoms of perioral dermatitis may come and go over months or years.

One of the most common causes is using topical steroid creams or steroid inhalers over a long period. The condition can also result from skin irritation or rosacea.

In addition, some people get perioral dermatitis because they use heavy face creams or moisturizers, or fluorinated toothpaste.

After a person stops using a steroid cream, the rash may get worse before it gets better. Wash with a mild soap or soap substitute to avoid further irritation.

@Whatiswrongwithmyface it looks like peri-oral dermatitis to me. I've had it. Do you use moisturisers or moisturising soaps? If so stop that right away, and any make up that contains oils of any kind (including sunscreens). You may need a course of tetracyclines to clear it up properly. (I've had it on and off for years--I use body shop oil free facial wash and a powder sunscreen)

I'm pretty sure it's eczema. (I used to have it all over my face.)

You need prescription hydrocortisone 0.5% (which you can't buy OTC) OR you could try getting hold of some 1% strength. Most pharmacies will not sell it to you for your face as used long term it can cause some issues with skin thinning, but for a week, it's okay.

You could try using Eucerin creams ( in Boots) for eczema that might help settle it down.

I get something similar to that when I use certain toothpastes. I've started using kids bubblegum toothpaste to avoid it.

@JinglingHellsBells using hydrocortisone on your face can cause perioral dermatitis as mentioned by PP above which could be what the OP has. I had it for a while and made it worse with hydrocortisone.

I needed a course of antibiotics and now have to be really careful with what toothpaste I use and things I put on my face. I was told to wash my hands straight away after putting hydrocortisone on DS's body eczema in case I touched my face by mistake and set it off again.

I think the best thing the OP can do is ask her doctor for advice.

Symptoms of perioral dermatitis include:

a red, scaly, or bumpy rash

Which OP doesn’t have? She doesn’t necessarily have “redness around the mouth”, I would have thought that would involve redness closer to the lips or around both lips judging by images online.

I wouldn’t rule out eczema just yet. I had something similar in a different area (on my body) and it was diagnosed as contact dermatitis (reaction to a chemical). My skin had a similar red patch and flaked off too, leaving post inflammatory hyperpigmentation
