AIBU?

To be horrified by my kitchen muckiness

We have had to self isolate for the last 2 weeks and Ive done nothing at all in the house during that time. Its been bloody lovely for me.

Since Im expecting nobody to be popping in I have lived the high life of slobbing about ,MNing , snacking to olympic standards and generally having a lazy time.

But wouldnt you know it. A work ethic caught up with me at a weak moment and I started wiping a cloth around the kitchen worktops . Next thing I know Im hefting microwaves and canisters about while I clean around and under them. Now, although Ive not done much in the house recently I would say that Im a clean and tidy person normally which is why these last 2 weeks have been such a rest cure for me.

But how on earth has such an accumulation of dust and crumbs managed to find its way under the microwave? And I am now wishing I took a photo of the amount of crumbs that were holed up in the toaster. I mean, I know there can be some crumbs . But we dont use the toaster all that much. But -there was an actual heap of crumbs. A good hand span width with some pretty big lumps in there. Although actually I dont think Ive ever cleaned the damned thing out - and I reckon we've had it for about 5-6 years.

It was very satisfying though.

Next thing is the cutlery drawer...

Last week I cleaned the kitchen cupboard doors really well using a hand steamer. When I had finished all the kitchen surfaces were gleaming and inspired I went on to steam clean the floor.

The next day I happened to touch the underside of the work surface overhang Envy ( not envy) it was disgusting! I don’t think I have ever cleaned it.

I realise now I should stop looking for cleaning jobs to alleviate boredom.

Do you have children and have they been preparing food and snacks for themselves?

I can make toast without too much mess. My ten and thirteen year olds, on the other hand, seem to think it's a legal requirement to coat every available surface in crumbs. Honestly I have never wiped down my kitchen so much, and I'm not fussily house proud. Bloody filth wizards, the damn pair of them.

I only have one DD and shes usually out of the house working. She often makes her own food but thats usually in the air fryer or microwave. The toaster not so much.

Unfortunately this is not recent filth. It must go back several years.

Horrifying thought.

Omg, I empty the toaster out every 4-8 weeks, but do use it daily. However, there's alot of things I don't do! 😚

Accumulation of crumbs in the toaster will eventually lead to a small but containable worktop fire. And a posh new toaster.

If you don't empty crumbs, just be sure you have a fire blanket. If you have kids, teach them the dangers of throwing water on burning electrical appliances.

The undersides of cupboards are designed to be invisible and are best ignored. 😉

In the time otherwise spent cleaning, you could write a bodice-ripper and make a fortune - or at least enough never to have to clean your own kitchen again!

You clean your kitchen after only two weeks?
Gotta be a stealth boast.

Mine is disgusting. The oven hood is greasy and sticky, cupboard handles the same. Fucking crumbs get everywhere. I wipe surfaces several times a day but it’s still grubby. whole house is bloody grubby.
Always reading on here about people whose houses are “sparkling”.
How????

This thread has made me realise how high my cleaning standards are. I thought they were just normal.

Me too, in fact I thought about starting a thread about it the other day. Are their standards lower than they think or do they spend every waking minute cleaning?

@fairislecable does the steam cleaner get that kitchen grease that coats cupboards? I bleached all of my kitchen when we moved in (3 years ago!) but have only done a cursory wipe down since. It wasn't until a door fell off that I realised the tops and hidden edges of the doors were, well, horrible!

@Welshmaenad love it! Filth wizards Grin

Yes it’s a hand held steamer and if I aim it at the surface and then wipe down with a cloth it really gets rid of the grease.

I was also doing the handles but in the end unscrewed them and put them in the sink for a good scrub.
