AIBU?

To think you don’t burn many calories doing PE with Joe!

littleblackdress04 · 19/05/2020 14:08

I’ve done PE with Joe (with my kids) 3-4 times a week since the start so 9 weeks in. But I really haven’t noticed much change to my body shape at all and after 9 weeks I would expect to be more toned? I am stronger and can do a 1 minute plank but that’s about it.

Aibu to be a bit disappointed?!

I suppose it's not much exercise overall and it's body weight so not much strength work which would result in toning. Weight loss mostly comes from diet although the pe will help cardiovascular fitness it won't make you drip loads of weight

I think maybe I need to do some of his adult workouts too as really not finding it challenging enough!! I guess it’s not for me though!!

I think the strong thing 8s great but you need to do something before or afterwards to get the heart right up .

I think you are being unreasonable. I’ve done it 4 times a week with my kids, and according to my watch it only burns 100-150 calories, which (depending on your calorie intake of course) is never going to make big changes to your body. It’s a good workout, but it’s only 20 minutes of work, so in isolation isn’t going to do much in terms of fat loss or toning.

Realistically a 30 minute workout 3-4 times per week with no changes to your diet or lifestyle will make very little difference to your body shape.

Yes @run true- I think I thought that 30 mins every day would do something & I guess it has in that I am fitter! Just not in terms of toning!

Nope - you’re definitely not being unreasonable. I think he burns more calories chatting through the bloody workout than he does actually doing the exercises.

My lot are doing a Davina DVD each morning instead - it’s an old one but it’s good. I’ve been doing it with them and am more toned than I was before. I’m also running twice a week but only short distances (no more than 5k) so that’s not adding a huge amount, and the amount of crap I’m eating is definitely having an impact on the benefits of the exercise!

It's body weight so toning will be minimal, you really need to be doing weighted work outs to see a difference in how toned you are

I have been working out five times a week during lockdown, 35 min sessions. I have not lost weight, but I have lost "wobble"! The main reason I have not lost weight is that alongside my workouts, I have also been eating cake 😂

It's not really 30 mins though. By the time you take out the warm up, the talking and the intervals of standing around it's about 10 minutes. Which isn't a lot. Plus there's not a lot of weights involved including body weight exercises.

You'd probably see a difference if you tagged something else to it.

@roundtable you took the words out of my mouth.
At the end of the day it's for kids initially and it actually only about 22 mins.
Iv done it every day for 8 weeks and I feel like
Iv definitely lost some muffin top (haven't got any weight to lose) but overall I feel fitter and that's what I wanted. Iv also done a few of his other workouts too and they can be very hard.

I've done it every day and certainly feel better for it. I tend to do harder versions of some of what he does, extend some of the moves and have shorter rest times and use a set of hand weights where I can.

Tbf it's for kids really but it does get me up in the morning when I don't have any other reason to!

Well it’s just to get dc moving instead of them sitting watching tv etc

It’s not really aimed at grown women for changing body shape, unfortunately his work out isn’t going to help with that. You tube has some great videos to help you though

Yabu it's meant as an activity to get kids moving in a morning and use up some energy before they get on with school work, its not meant to be an adult weight loss programme.

My DDs school usually has 10/15 minutes of exercise first thing before lessons (the whole school do a daily mile around the grounds on dry days but - as we live in the Lakes where it rains heavily more often than not - in bad weather they do a fun activity in their classroom in the morning - dancing, zumba etc) so it has helped her keep to her routine to have breakfast, do the JW video then crack on with school work until lunch then has the afternoon free.

It helps make sure she does some activity even on days where her dad cant take her to the park/for a walk as she is an only child and so has nobody to run around and play active games with.

There isn't really any such thing as toning. The toning effect that you see on the body is result of either getting stronger or losing weight, or both.

I haven't done PE with Joe but I am following a programme with a PT and am seeing some benefits; slightly slimmer and feel so much better in myself. I second what PP's have said - you need to increase the lengths of times you do each exercise and cut the rest times.

For example I'm doing "circuits" of six exercises with gradually increasing intensity. At first it was 30 seconds on, 30 seconds rest, cycle through all the six exercises twice. Now i'm up to 50 seconds on, 10 seconds rest and do 7 full cycles through the six exercises. I never thought i could do that much, being a mostly unreformed smoker and drinker. Perhaps something like that is more what you need?

Well it's a kids workout - it's meant to get kids moving during lockdown, it's not designed for grown adults.

Try something like Jillian Michaels' 30 Day Shred. It's bloody hard at first but if you stick with it, you notice results really, really quickly. She has two people doing it with her, one who does a slightly easier version, then Jillian does the normal version, and then another girl does a harder version so it's adaptable depending your fitness and flexibility.

I figured it was a physical education workout not a weight lose one, more aimed to give children the jist of what a workout is, what a jumping jack is, etc just to get them moving around more

Diet is the vast majority of influence on body shape unless you’re lifting significant weights regularly or become a serious athlete - based on my husband and friends I suspect about 8 hours a week of at least moderate to intense exercise is the point you really see any noticeable difference without also improving your diet. This may be a bit lower if you were completely sedentary and very overweight before, but diet still is the main factor. There was an interesting letter to the Times this week from a GP who sounded very frustrated the government campaigns don’t really explain this and make it sound like an hour or two a week in front of a YouTube exercise video is enough to conquer obesity.

If Joe’s workouts burn 150 calories that’s the equivalent of one apple or a biscuit - it’s not going to make you lose weight and 20-30 minutes of body weight is also not sufficient to tone or make you more muscly.

That’s not to say it’s not worth doing - all the evidence is that exercise is great for you, just that there won’t be any visual differences to your body unless you do significantly significantly more or also reduce your diet intake.

I’m riding a bike round the parks and roads where I live for an hour or two every day and the weight is dropping off, though I’ve been combining it with eating a lot more fruit and veg (e.g. Chucking some broccoli into the pasta, having sliced tomato on my morning toast), not getting to eat out, and shopping much less frequently so once the crisps are gone there are no more for 5 days. Although the lockdown hasn’t done wonders for my mental health, it’s done wonders for my physical health. Definitely going to ride a bike into work when we go back, rather than take the car.

I haven't done it for weeks as I got bored and there was far too much chat but it was typically 2 x 10minute sets with 30min exercise and 30min rest in between, plus a longer rest between the sets. So in his half hour session you're only actually working out 10 minutes, so maybe 100-150 calories burnt max, if you work at true high intensity levels in those 30 second blocks. Given you need to burn around 3500 calories to burn a lb of fat you can see why it's not making any different to your weight / tone.

30 seconds exercise / rest not 30 minutes that should be!

It is a very short workout, I basically use it as warm up for my actual workout (30-45 min hiit with weights), then go out for an hour in the evening cycling, skating or playing footie with DS. I'm perimenopausal though and need to workout 7 days a week just to stay the same weight. God knows what I'd have to do to lose weight!

You will be fitter and with better muscle tone which is great but unless you lose weight the improved muscle tone will still be hidden under a layer of fat.

I don't mean that nastily. I'm just the same. I've done Millionaire Hoy's Pro 500 (30 day challenge) twice over during lockdown (I missed out all the boring pure stretch sessions the second time I admit) and I am definitely fitter, stronger and feel healthier.

But ... because I'm eating more and glugging more wine in lockdown I'm no lighter/slimmer. In fact I think I've put on a few pounds as my belly is wobblier. As they say "abs are made in the kitchen". I need to cut my food intake to reveal the dream body hiding underneath. Exercise burns very few calories really and it makes you hungrier. It doesn't really help with weight loss unless you are focused on your diet too.

I love my grub though. Maybe I'll just stay fit but a bit wobbly.
