Dm on the phone -
People who like drama call it covid.

People who prefer to make minimal fuss and get on with things call it coronavirus.

Ie the middle classes are more likely to call it coronavirus.

She was bu of course wasnt she. Didn't know what to say

Covid(-19) is much more specific. It is a Coronavirus, but not the only one.

She is BU and also wrong in my (albeit) limited experience ‘Covid’ is the more MC term.

Ooh interesting thought. I don't really talk to anyone so I haven't spotted a pattern, but I would love to see some data.

Based on other speech and language patterns I would think that the MC would prefer to say Covid-19 to show knowledge? But then of course the WC could try to "upspeak"?

Don't know about that.

Coronavirus is the virus.
Covid-19 is the disease.

I use them depending on which one I mean.

Lots of DHs 'clientele' are calling it the 'rona (although I doubt they apostrophise). I wonder what your DM would think of that 😁

Secil · 18/05/2020 23:12

Well it all means the same,

Its just abbreviated.

COrona VIrus Disease 19.

A bit like saying Flu or Influenza.

Covid-19 is the term I use in all professional context, so it generally gets used in my every day conversation too. In briefings it is always refered to by it's medical name of Covid-19.

The cool kids say “Rona” 😎

From a faux posh colleague I've also heard Covaid (like live aid but socially distanced)

Covid is the more realistic term. If we really were to sort the names in terms of class of person mine would be:

Covid-19 - upper class/middle class
Covid- Middle class/ working class
Coronavirus - middle class/ working class
Corona - working virus
The ‘rona- bottom low class.

[disclaimer: I’m joking. Your mother is ridiculous]

@stickygotstuck is correct. Coronavirus is the virus which causes the disease of COVID-19. So you use the correct term, depending on what you're talking about.

Noti23 · 18/05/2020 23:15

I just say ‘Covid’ or ‘corona’ because I’m lazy and this virus seems be invading every conversation I have.

I all it covid. Coronavirus is generic name like the common cold is a coronavirus. COVID is more blunt and easier to type and say

Report
theconstantinoplegardener · 18/05/2020 23:18

Coronavirus is the name of the virus
Covid19 is the name of the disease caused by the virus (Corona virus disease and 19 because it was first identified in 2019. Diseases are no longer named after people (like Parkinson's disease) or places (like Spanish flu), but nowadays after their action on the body or their causative organism, like covid

There's a lot of "C19" in work emails!

Report
AngeloMysterioso · 18/05/2020 23:20

Coronavirus is to Covid19 as HIV is to AIDS, am I right?

Or is Coronavirus to Covid19 as Bird is to Sparrow?

Report
SmileyClare · 18/05/2020 23:20

I agree with sticky covid is the disease caused by the corona virus.

So if you want to be pedantic then you can't catch covid 19 or spread it to others, you are catching the virus which then causes corona virus disease (covid).

My boss went on national tv to talk about it and called it Covvid.

My friend who is relentlessly middle class calls it Coronnavirus.

I feel a bit of a prick saying anything so generally call it It or “The Situation”.

SharonasCorona · 18/05/2020 23:24

I think people use them interchangeably and your DM is overthinking it.

Piss heads who think they're hilarious my sister call it the Billy Ray.
