AIBU?

Wedding in December

My sister was due to get married in July but has postponed her wedding. The venue have said she can have her wedding in December or can wait until summer 2021. She is leaning towards having her wedding this December but I think she should wait until next summer as there is no guarantee mass gatherings would be allowed in December.
AIBU to think that she should wait until next year to get married?

Why do you think she's being unreasonable?

I think December should be ok

Even if it's 'allowed' in Dec she might find that a lot of guests would still be wary about attending a large gathering? Especially if they would maybe be hoping to spend Christmas with family? It might depend when in Dec? Too close to Christmas and people might be more worried about catching/spreading virus and taking it home to parents/grandparents/family etc?

YABU it’s your sisters wedding it’s her choice when she wants to get married you don’t get a say.

Same here, we were getting married in July but realised that any version of a wedding we want won't be the same until next year!

I really hope December is OK! Next summer would be safer but that might be out too.

So tricky to say.

It is really up to the couple but I suspect she may be disappointed if she thinks that everyone will RSVP yes. We cancelled our wedding and haven’t rescheduled anything yet.

YANBU to be concerned at what a December wedding might look like this year and concerned for her disappointment levels. No harm in voicing these concerns before anything is set in stone. However if she is adamant on going with it you’ll just have to suck it up unfortunately.

We've rebooked our May wedding (supposed to be in 10 days Sad) to July 2021. I'd be wary of December. As a PP said, even if gatherings are back on I reckon people would be wary of attending, esp if they are particularly vulnerable. We're still not feeling that confident that next July will be okay.

Maybe she doesn’t want to wait around another bloody year to get married though!

My sisters wedding is August and still hasn't been cancelled yet. She can't as she won't be covered by insurance she has to wait for venue to cancel.

Well, she could go for December but be prepared for a significant proportion of guests to cancel? We’re supposed to be going to an October wedding as an extended family- my Mum is incredibly anxious about it already. It the wedding goes ahead, I suspect we might have to say we can’t go (higher risk category).

I'd be nervous about booking it for December, but it might be ok by then. My main thought was about all the things shes already got prepared - will the bridesmaid dresses and anything else booked be suitable for a cold December day?

Could she do next spring? Doesn't seem as far away and gives a little extra time!

All of our work weddings booked in for this year have moved to next year as it's just so uncertain at the moment

Thank you for all your replies. I will speak to her again this evening. I am just worried for her as I don't want her to get her hopes up for it to be potentially cancelled again. I know it's her choice, just looking for some advice from others.

@bubblysqueak our wedding insurance didn’t cover us even though our wedding was due to be in April during lockdown. It’s because they do not cover you for a government regulation or act. Ridiculous I know.

@Bumble84 were you able to postpone it or have you lost out?

Really bad so many people bought insurance and they've got out of paying out!

Report
Bubblysqueak · 18/05/2020 17:53

There's will cover them only if the venue cancel so they have to wait for them to do it.

I would go for July next year as even if places were open guests may feel vulnerable and not want to attend

Haven’t rescheduled it as yet because there are no guarantees and we didn’t want it hanging over our heads. We have lost a bit of money but made peace with it. To reschedule it had to be done within the year.

I thought our insurance would also pay out when the venue cancelled but because they cancelled due to Coronavirus we weren’t. I really hope your sisters does but I wouldn’t take it as a given.

To anyone who has had wedding services cancelled by their suppliers you are entitled to at least a partial if not full refund, even if your wedding insurance will not cover you. Please read the CMA guidance about consumer refunds and covid-19.
