To wonder how the hell I’m still pregnant?

Last time I saw DP was on March 19th, so earliest I could be is 10W4D.

On 22nd of March I began to spot, and then the next day had absolutely horrendous horrendous cramps and heavy clotty bleeding that left me being sick and bed bound. Then it continued like a normal period until March 31st. Except it clearly wasn’t a normal period and I assumed it must have been a MC. Don’t give it much thought once it ends.

Then on April 27th my period comes as normal. Usual flow, lasts 6 days. I assume everything is back to normal post ‘miscarriage’.

Except for the past week I’ve been feeling incredibly odd. Mid-back pain, indigestion even though I’ve not been eating much, dizziness when standing up. Yesterday I took a spare P test I had lying around just to pass some time, not expecting it to be positive at all. Except it was.

I’m absolutely stunned. How has baby survived both bouts of bleeding, the first of which was way heavier than a normal bleed? I’ve managed to get an appointment for Wednesday but I just can’t comprehend it. Has this happened to anybody else?

I had horrendous bleeding with my first at around 10 and 17 weeks.
Both times I was told to prepare for the worst and both times the scan showed a happy baby with no reason for the bleeding.

Did you take a pregnancy test before you passed the clots etc?

Floofboopsnootandbork Mon 18-May-20 14:39:51

I had really heavy bleeding 3 times and every time baby was fine. I had a scan a week after the last lot of bleeding and baby couldn’t have been heather, a few weeks later I had a miscarriage with no signs at all.

sinustrain Mon 18-May-20 14:41:32

@silverliningclouds Nope, just assumed due to the nature of the bleeding it must have been an MC. Didn’t take a test as I figured it wouldn’t change anything.

My friend had 4 haemorrhages when pregnant , clots and everything, and her baby is now a beautiful 5 year old loving life ! I think it really depends on what’s causing the bleeding . I had a haematoma lying just under baby at 7 weeks and I was told to expect a huge bleed at some point between then and my 12 week scan but when I went for my scan 6 weeks later it had submerged and disappeared without a bleed. It’s different for everyone . I’m glad you and baby are ok though that’s the main thing ! X

Actually though, now I come to think of it, the April period was slightly lighter. And lasted 6 days when my usual is 7 days.

I'm surprised you didn't see a doctor/go to the EPU after your 'miscarriage' - heavy bleeding doesn't always mean miscarriage! My cousin had full strength 'periods' for the first 6 months of her pregnancy, every month like clockwork!

silverliningclouds Mon 18-May-20 14:42:54

Very difficult. When were you due on. Was it around the 22nd if you only got pregnant on the 18th then it could be unrelated?

OwlBeThere Mon 18-May-20 14:43:48

I had periods all through my first pregnancy. No one has ever been able to explain how or why.

Francesthemute Mon 18-May-20 14:45:47

This was me 10 years ago. I had such a heavy bleed that I felt certain there was no possibility that I could have been pregnant. It felt like early labour, agonising long and intense. It was awful. DD is 10 later this year! Sometimes I look at her and wonder how smile

RockThrills Mon 18-May-20 14:45:49

I bled like a period through my first pregnancy. I also bled in between so heavily that it soaked through jeans! Each time there was no reason found, cervix closed etc. She's 5 now!

elbanabanana Mon 18-May-20 14:46:58

I had a subchorionic haematoma during my second pregnancy that bled on and off for the first 20 weeks. Sometimes the bleeds were like periods, others like spotting.

That pregnancy is now a happy chubby toddler currently demanding more raisins.

Francesthemute Mon 18-May-20 14:47:04

Oh, and I had a period following what I thought was a miscarriage too, but because of dates I was already, and still was, pregnant.

Hm, well my last period before the heavy one was Feb 11th so the heavy one was definitely very late.

I did forget to add in my original post that I had been taking the pill on and off but wasn’t very disciplined with it which may have buggered everything up.

I just feel so guilty as I’ve been eating like shit and had the odd glass of wine over the past couple of weeks. I don’t even know how far along I am. Could be 10W4D or could be a month further than that. I just don’t know.

CoachBombay Mon 18-May-20 14:59:40

OP you could have had a hemorrhage of types, or it may have been a twin pregnancy and you have lost one, and the surviving twin is ok. This happened to a friend. Bleeding in pregnancy is common, now that you know though I'd get everything checked out to be sure.

I wouldn't worry too much about the odd glass of wine and bad food for the last couple of months. Many many women all throughout history haven't discovered they are pregnant till later on. Be kind to yourself 💐

I had this - all the symptoms of a miscarriage but at the same time., all the symptoms of pregnancy. One day I'd be certain I'd miscarried, the next I was equally sure I was still pregnant. It never occurred to me that both things could be simultaneously true - an early scan revealed it was a multiples pregnancy and I'd sadly lost one of the babies. It was actually triplets though, so I still ended up with twins! Having gone into that scan not knowing if I was even still pregnant at all, that was the shock of my life!

anothernamechangeagain Mon 18-May-20 15:02:45

I think you really need to go for a scan to find out what's going on.

stuckasachildagain Mon 18-May-20 15:03:27

Hi, don't want to be a scaremonger but heavy bleeding could also mean ectopic. Do you have any pain? I second pp in you are best to contact an epu and get checked out. Fingers crossed for you

Mo81 Mon 18-May-20 15:05:51

I bled for weeks when i was pregnant baby was fineno reson for it.
My friend also believed she had misscareied and hadnt

MadameJosephine Mon 18-May-20 15:06:02

Could it be a new pregnancy? I had a heavy bleed at 6-7 weeks, went to EPAU and had passed everything so definitely a miscarriage but then became pregnant again immediately after with DD who is now 7

JinglingHellsBells Mon 18-May-20 15:06:17

Do you want to be pregnant?

spiderlight Mon 18-May-20 15:06:50

A friend of mine had similar - she was carrying twins and lost one of them, but the other is now a big strapping 11-year-old and the eldest of five siblings.

sinustrain Mon 18-May-20 15:07:03

@stuckasachildagain I have on and off pains at the bottom of my rib on each side. The pain keeps changing side. Not sure if it’s related to the PG but it’s odd. Definitely going to bring it up at my appointment on Weds.

I’ve just felt so bloody odd recently. Before I took the pregnancy test I was looking into getting tested for Coronavirus simply because of how tired, dizzy and breathless I felt. No nausea though, had I had nausea I might have suspected I was still pregnant before now.

KatnissK Mon 18-May-20 15:07:52

This happened to my friend - bfp, bleed, period. She didn't have a scan or anything - I think she just spoke to her GP who told her to take OTC painkillers and call back if the bleeding became very heavy/didn't stop, but that was all. The following month she got another bfp - I remember her telling me how lucky she felt to fall pg so quickly after the mc. Went for her 12w scan and was actually 16w - she hadn't lost the first pregnancy at all, just obviously randomly bled.
