Grinch Warning

I’ve been invited to a ‘faerie’ fb group.
On the face of it, it’s very sweet. Like wine ninja (I assume) or whatever, the aim is to deliver a gift to someone in the community (stealthily) to give them a lovely surprise and brighten their day. Delightful. In theory, unexpected, and you’ll never know who dropped a gift.
I had a look because I was a bit confused as to what a faerie group actually was.
It’s reams and reams of women posting their addresses and a list of what they would like.
(It’s wall to wall chocolates, wine and the occasional pot plant. I saw a face mask too.)
Anyhoo - as a faerie you can just pick someone, and do a little shopping trip, and drop off. The recipient is then supposed to add a smiley emoji or something to their original post so that people know the faeries have already visited. And obv you are supposed to choose someone who hasn’t received a gift.
I really want to feel all community minded and coo about how lovely it all is and how warm and fuzzy it makes me feel, but...
Eek, this is desperately middle class and all the people who could really do with a surprise pick me up won’t sign up because they can’t afford to go off and buy wine and luxury chocs and pot plants for someone and deliver it...
Posting lists of treats you want?
Posting your address where anyone can see it? (I’ve been invited but not accepted and now know where huge swathes of my co-workers live, despite having zero interest)
Am I a huge curmudgeon? The group has snowballed to hundreds of people overnight, so obv loads thinks it’s ace. And there are the obligatory pictures of wine and chocolate being shared every few minutes.
Our town has laid off about 85% of all employees. I mean, a little pick me up is more than welcome for loads of people.
The big huge giant hairy cynic in me says it was started by one of the off license owners (it wasn’t) or chocolate shop (it wasn’t).
Am I a horrible person for feeling slightly tarnished by the sight of lists of things people are asking for from the faeries?
I’d rather not join at all and just drop off lovely things to folk I feel like need a something, rather than those posting for it?!!!!

No of course you are not a grinch.

Some people might be cool about posting that level of personal info openly. I think it us naïve (at best)

That sounds awful 😂 a total cringefest

I guarantee you it will end up with some people getting loads of crap, and some getting nothing. Then the group will implode with people falling out. These things never work the way they are intended to.

I don’t think you’re a grinch, it’s not your cup of tea - no crime in that!

Omg I have been fussing all day thinking I’m over-reacting and need to get over myself - they all seem so thrilled

It sounds a bit dubious to me.

Stating the obvious, but as you are posting exactly what gift you want and if it works as it should and everyone buys for everyone else, then you might as well all just go out and buy your own treats.

What idiot is stupid enough to post their address on the Internet?

I was invited to an Amazon wish list one🙄
No thanks seems a bit scammy somehow

Yeah, I'd rather buy my own. It's the only way you'll get exactly what you want, honestly, and even if you go around playing "Faerie" for someone else, there's no guarantee you'll ever be selected as a lucky recipient.

  1. Some people would argue that the Grinch was a good guy, just hurtin' and a little misunderstood
  2. That sounds like brainwashing - buttering you up/softening your defenses just before they ask you to join an MLM.

You saw right through it though!

Aargh it’s not even a surprise, is it, if you’ve posted on a page stating where you live and what you want you want?! You’re just going to get irritated waiting... rather than carrying on about your business and out of the blue finding something lovely. It’s a wine and chocolate swap with no guarantees.

They should change the name to Beggars. Let’s face it, that’s what they are.

Cringe inducing beggars.

There is one in my area but for kids. People are posting their kids details
Boy/girl age & what they are into like super heroes, unicorns, art stuff etc. Along with addresses!!!. Its crazy quite a few people have pointed out how risky it is but they've been shouted down. Who the hell would think its a good idea to post your kids names ages & addresses on social media.
