To ask if you've used MusicMagpie or WeBuyBooks to offload books etc

Or a similar book/CD/DVD selling app?

I usually give them to charity shops but obviously they're closed so wondered if anyone had used these companies and would recommend them or others?

I use Ziffit. Only about 1 in 3 are accepted though.

They're a bit of a faff. When I did it and scanned the barcodes I got lots of "we don't want that title at the moment"

Then they pay for postage but you need to find a box to ship them in

I've used music magpie a long time ago for DVDs and CDS. It was fairly straight forward but don't expect a lot of cash.
Also tried to use WeBuyBooks but they didn't want any of the ones that I was selling. Took a bit of effort to put all the books in their system then get told they didn't want them which was annoying.

I used music magpie to sell CD's. I was amazed how much I got for them. I did find the labelling instructions confusing, so one box never arrived, but that wasn't their fault.

It is random what they want and the prices they pay Our local animal shelter is asking us to sell stuff via these apps and donate proceeds to them.

I got rid of loads of DVDs with music magpie, it was more about clearing space than the money as I was moving, and they collect from your house which was handy.

Most of them were worth very little

I’ve just sent some stuff to We Buy Books, just waiting to see how much money I actually get! Agree it’s a bit of a faff for not much return, but it was a good way of getting them out of the house at the moment!

I've used music Magpie. Tbh even if they said they didn't want it, i put it in anyway as they can recycle them. You don't get tons of money but i got enough to make it worth my while. Try cex as well.

I just don't think the likes of Oxfam bookshops will want to be inundated with donations when lockdown is over!

I've used WeBuyBooks several times and it's been very easy and quick - but only really to sell unusual/specialist books and DVDs; they don't take novels etc.

Yeah, for me it's the storage bit that's difficult. If I had room to store them I'd be keeping them!

It takes ages to upload them, some aren't recognised, many they don't want, and most of the rest are worth ten pence each. If that.
I used a different company once and they never paid me.

If you download the app, you just scan in the bar code and get the price or a no thanks.

Could you not just put them on Facebook marketplace? I’ve got a few books that way- put them in a bag, leave them outside and money through the letterbox

I did ok with music magpie and DVDs but it was a while ago. I used webuybooks to offload text books and teaching resources and did well. I tried we buy books and ziffit when I had a load of novels but gave up. The apps wouldn't work properly a lot of the time, a lot of books they didn't want or offered pennies for.

I sent a shoe box full to Ziffit and got about £14. The postage was free but I had to drive miles to get to the drop off shop, it had to be the right concession, not the nearest post office. I might used again but as others have said, there’s lots that get rejected. The highest price I got for one item was about £3.50 for some obscure meditation CD, I have no idea why that was worth so much more than any of the other stuff.

Magpie was decent a few years back but not now.

In the mid-2010s, I sold a load of CDs and got around £150 for them. Per album, it was £2 to £3. They don't accept singles though. I also sold a phone as they bettered CEX's offer by about £10.

Fast forward to 2019. I was getting rid of the last lot of my CDs as I'm now on Spotify and they gave peanuts for them. Like 30p each. Back to phones, Magpie offer was poor, citing "heavy scratches", but there weren't any and it was really fine, good battery health etc. Flogged it on eBay in the end for £210 vs £105 (so double of Magpie) and I received good feedback for it.

I sold to Music Magpie a few years ago and got good prices but tried again a couple of months back and nearly every item was rejected and those they wanted they offered pennies for.

Some charity shops won't even take DVDs now since so many people are getting rid of their collections.

The only books I have found worth selling are academic books and you get a better price on Ebay than book selling apps. Again it is somewhere where fewer people are buying, I used to make a decent amount of pocket money selling books on Ebay and Amazon a few years back but it's not worth the hassle now.

I used musicmagpie to get rid of some dvds and phones. Packaged them all up as required and took pics of them. The most “valuable” item was a blackberry in v good condition I was supposed to get 20 quid for (this was about 5 years ago). They said it wasn’t in the box and didn’t believe my pictures showing it. I swore then I’d rather give stuff away for free than deal with those bandits.

I used Ziffit and they don't give you much money for books. Rip off tbh but its better than binning them I suppose

I'm going to end up binning some there is nothing wrong but charity shops wont take them they are overwhelmed and of course closed right now I'm tired of being a storage place if they want us to recycle more they should accept more

I tried seeing if I could get rid of some books on WeBuyBooks but they weren't interested in most of the titles I had. The only charity shop nearby which takes books is an Oxfam, but they're quite picky too, so sadly I ended up taking them to the recycling bin. I would have been happy to just give them away (I'm not bothered about the money), it's a shame there's no way I could just leave them somewhere for people to pick up for free.

Yes.

We had LOADS so I found it most effective (if a bit time consuming) to download a few different apps and then scan each book for each app. Some books had a few £s difference between one app and another. I had a box on the go for each app and would put it in the highest quoting one. Some would be unwanted in one app and £s on another do it was well worth checking. Some would be just 10 or 6p though.

It took about 3 days to go through them all (around looking after kids) but I made about £250 by doing it that way, while also massively decluttering.
