NHS KeyWorker Car Stickers

LifeIsAPotato · 15/05/2020 08:44

I'm an NHS Key worker (on mat leave, going back to work in a couple of weeks) . I am so grateful for the recognition a lot of us are getting, mostly the priority access to supermarkets etc. HOWEVER I have only used this once as I feel awful queue jumping (very British lol) and plus as I have been on mat leave feel a bit of a fake 😂.

Now my Neighbour who DEFINITLEY does not work for the NHS has plastered NHS KeyWorker Stickers all over his massive, very new 4X4 (Yes I'd love to be able to afford a car like his!).

I just find it very amusing and am wondering what the stickers will achieve for him?

You can pick them up for a couple of quid on eBay...

Should I say anything to him? If so, what?!
TBH I feel it's so wrong and just using this board to get it off my chest!

Why are you needing to jump queues if you're on maternity leave and not working?

But back to your point, I think this whole NHS keyworker worship is being taken too far. Why anyone would have a sticker in their car to show they are a keyworker is a bit baffling to me. There's tonnes of keyworkers who aren't NHS who aren't getting anywhere near this level of recognition.

I probably wouldn't say anything to the neighbour, would just think they're a twat and let them get on with it.

Agreed, why are you queue jumping? Isn't that just as cf as the neighbours car stickers seeing as neither of you are actually providing services

If your queue jumping on mat leave then you're worse than your neighbour. The idea is that people who have just done a 12 hour shift on the frontline don't have to queue for an hour.

Well you jumping the queue while on mat leave is a total piss take.

Yeah I disagree with queue jumping for anyone really . At the moment I'd be more than happy to let a nhs worker who just dons a shift to go in front of me . But when I go back to work and I have also done long shifts and my time is limited then I wouldn't.

I find all this "self diagnosing" as a Key Worker quite annoying.

If some of the projects I work on went wrong it would make headline news, but I am not calling myself a keyworker.

I guess everyone one with a job is a key worker in some way. An employer that wanted to be successful would not waste money paying someone that was not key to their operations.

(Maybe after furlough, employers will see if they were carrying people that weren't key)

Really poor form to judge your neighbour whilst your queue jumping on mat leave.

I'm a key worker but I haven't mentioned it once during this crisis, I find the whole thing a bit, well cringey if I'm honest.

Your neighbour is clearly an arse but why the hell are you queue jumping if you're clearly not going shopping after a long shift....

I would have to say something like 'oh Bob, I didn't realise you worked for the NHS as well, what's do you do?'

But I don't think he is any better or worse than you for queue jumping unnecessarily. The whole point in lettering NHS staff go before the rest of us is because their time is precious and limited due to them working long ass days. That's not you, is it Hmm

Me too.
At the start of lockdown, our nursery said they could still have DS because apparently I am a Key Worker - I work for a logistics company.... in SALES and therefore am not remotely instrumental in keeping supply chains running and can very easily work from home... AND have a DH here who also isn’t a ‘Key Worker’
I’m finding theses phrases horribly trite.

I think so much about all of this crisis is hypocritical.
Imagine if before COVID-19, the government’s statement was ‘eat less sugar, protect the NHS’ or ‘Drink less alcohol, protect the NHS’ and people were being asked to clap for them... I would imagine not so many people would be on board.

The NHS was ostensibly suffering before COVID came along but people didn’t seem too fussed about modifying their behaviour to avoid putting it under strain back then.

Someone at the end of my road has a print out in their windscreen that says NHS keyworker, integral to NHS supply chain. Wouldn't be shouting about that personally, and also as it's a public road not really sure whether he believes it to mean he is entitled to a space (he is working from home anyway). I'm not going to say anything about queue jumping when on maternity leave but you can probably guess most people's thoughts on that one.

well you are a fake aren't you

you can't become a key worker vigilante when you're abusing your NHS status

shameful

I wouldn’t be displaying a sticker, nhs or not. People in our trust have been getting abuse when out with ID.

I’m NHS and have not once que jumped or used the designated times for shopping. I don’t see any need, I can go on my day off. Also fwiw the times are during my working day anyway.

Why are you using it if you don’t need it? Surely that’s cf itself?!

You lost the moral high ground when you jumped queues on maternity leave 🤷‍♀️ (FWIW, I'm also an nhs employee on maternity leave and haven't taken advantage of any of the 'perks' for nhs). Perhaps your neighbour thinks the stickers are to show support for key workers..?

I know, it's awful about my queue jumping, that's why I said I only did it ONCE and felt horrendous about it so it was never repeated!

Your queue jumping on maternity leave reminds me of a friend who worked at the local supermarket during a petrol strike. They were told that they could havr priority at the attached petrol station to ensure they could get to work. So she filled her car to brimming. Even though she walked to work. Went back the next night with her husband's car to fill that to brimming.

I also find this ‘Key worker’ thing quite ridiculous.

My DH is on the Gov list of Keyworkers, he isn’t front line and often has to go into the office but (his dept is the only one’s listed by the Gov)
I’m not actually sure why he was given a letter by his HR as he’s ever seen any Police stopping people and he doesn’t get any priority or discounts for anything.

My sister was also given a Keyworker letter from her company HR dept, Lord know why when her job isn’t listed by the Gov and can be done from home fully with no problems at all.

I do think this NHS priority and discounts etc does need to stop now, when there was panic buying fine but everywhere is fully stocked now from what I can tell.

Why on earth did you jump the queue?

I suppose it is on the same level as my neighbour claiming to be an NHS keyworker Shock. Sorry.
