AIBU?

To have begun disliking tech?

By this I mean phones, laptops, etc. Not things like washing machines or fridges or whatever.

Anyway, I just feel like we’re being advertised to 24/7. Before the pandemic I went to the city near
me and was shocked to see that was used to be a beautiful was now a giant screen playing go compare adverts! It seems like there’s some sort of subversive advertising everywhere.

I also don’t like the whole siri/alexa/google home thing. I’m not a conspiracy theorist but there’s constant stuff on the TV and in the news about how they store what’s said, how they’re constantly listening, etc. Concerning when you consider how easily many cameras are hacked into.

Lastly I think it’s scary to see how many people think technology is only good (for children in particular) when there’s proof it really isn’t. Of course it can be useful but at the end of the day it isn’t healthy, especially not for children, for anything but short periods of time.

Where there used to be a beautiful what?

Anyway YABU.

Just don't have Siri and all that. I LOVE the internet. It's literally my life. It's provided me with the means to earn my living without ever leaving the house if I don't want to.

I DO leave the house daily....but I don't HAVE to.

I love the research I can do online...the millions of websites with fascinating information. The entertainment and information.

It's my everything.

I don't have Siri and all that...I live semi rurally...so I don't have to see the ugly billboards.

If its a screen billboard just wear polarized lenses because the anti glare filter makes the whole thing go black. Its like an ad blocker for real life.

I work in tech, and I dislike the type of tech you mention. I do have an iPhone but it’s locked down insofar as is possible wrt camera/location app permissions. I only have location on when I very rarely go on Google Maps. I wouldn’t dream of having Siri enabled, nor any Alexa type device. (I do plan to buy a roomba though 😂)

I’m not against technology at all per se, the Internet is of course useful Hmm but one can still object to the accompanying total loss of privacy and pervasiveness of said “progress”.

YANBU especially with the examples you mentioned. Such a lot of advertising toss at all times, even when you don't have a screen in your hand.... it feels like it's every bloody where. Its draining and feels like its hard to get a break from it.

I'm currently 'taking part' in a Zoom church service, one of many over the past few weeks, and I'm beginning to hate them. I'm not a Luddite by any means and I appreciate that virtual worship brings some opportunity, but for me, it's soul destroying. I hate the clunkiness of it and find it really hard to concentrate and immerse myself in it. I can't wait to get back to a real, human gathering.
