AIBU?

To be a little surprised how many essential trips

Were being made yesterday in cars and on motorcycles with extremely loud exhausts blasting around at full tilt. Perhaps it was the absence of other traffic, but it does seem as if some bellends are using it as an excuse to roar around in their fucking noisy bellend-mobiles

My BIL is a first responder and uses his motorbike. Sorry

Same here. Every 5 minutes or so last night some idiot was racing past in a car with a ridiculous exhaust. I think they feel the empty roads are their personal race track.

Clearly they aren't all first responsers 🙄

Yes, there is definitely a cohort who are making use of the open roads. There is some appalling driving around at the moment.

Stop twitching and focus on your own life. This lockdown is bringing out the very worst in some people. OP if you are bored do something to help someone.

I didn't notice any this weekend but there were lots the 3 before, including some lads on very noisy quad bikes tearing through.

My road turned into Silverstone for most of yesterday the local farmers field was as busy as a national trust house on mothers day (when they run the free prosecco deal)

I live near a 60mph road and the driving has become insane.
Where I cross to walk my dogs it’s reduced to a 40mph.
It’s bonkers watching some drivers completely ignoring the limit.

Someone passed me overtaking on a 50 stretch doing well over a 100. It was scary to watch.

I am not bored I am annoyed by loud exhausts and aggressive driving by bellends. Why is that unacceptable to you? How do you know I’m not helping people?

I took my noisy car (apparent bellend machine) for a blast yesterday because it needed running. And I justified it by putting a little bit of fuel in it. It didn’t need fuel but it did need running. It is noisy and fast and loud and it cost me a lot of money so turning it over and keeping it running well is an essential trip for me. Yesterday was the only day I could do it.

Stop with the fake surprise.

A lot of people aren't respecting the lockdown. That will have been taken into account in any government calculations.

Here in France there have been over 800 000 fines given out in 5 weeks because people aren't respecting the rules. I doubt the UK is much more obedient.

Our DC are extremely road-savvy (growing up in central Paris they have to be) but we've had to really insist on the fact that there are fewer cars so they are driving faster and don't expect so many people to be crossing roads. It's common sense.

Where we live the dickheads are taking advantage of the quiet streets, which are narrow residential roads, and driving stupidly fast. Others riding off road bikes really fast and racing each other or doing wheelies 😡

Yeah, I had a quad bike doing wheelies behind me yesterday as I drove to drop some food off for a friend.

@Winterwoollies what is the attraction of something that is noisy? You say it was expensive - how is that relevant?
I am trying to understand why making a lot of noise is desirable.

You know many of those trips were not essential and it has been noticed by the police that some people are using the quiet roads as an excuse to drive like maniacs, it's up to them to deal with it.

Some people will always inconsiderate/stupid/act illegally and that won't change whether you get wound up about it or not.

Maybe call the police if it's a regular thing, so they can decide whether to send someone to deal with it. Otherwise, for the sake of your sanity, focus your attention elsewhere.

I was all prepared to say stop curtain twitching but the loud revving of motorbikes does my fucking head in even in normal times so I am going to say YANBU.

OP has the cruise scene, and general loutish behaviour exhibited by some people entirely passed you by up to now?

Not all car enthusiasts drive dangerously, illegally or noisily, obviously, but those who speed or race on public roads are, by default.

I’m with you OP. Over the weekend the roads were busier than I’ve seen in a long time and I’ve noticed cars diving much faster than usual. I live quite rurally and it’s like our road has become a race track...the speed cars are driving past my house is frightening and noisy.

Report
Boom45 · 20/04/2020 08:29

Some people will be taking the piss but there are still quite a lot of essential trips that people need to take. Lots of people can't work at home and lots of people still need to drive to shop/pick up medicine for themselves or self isolating friends and family. As well as parents of children who live between 2 houses. Some of those essential trips will be being made by bad drivers and people with noisy cars.

Report
Winterwoollies · 20/04/2020 08:30

@Hingeandbracket it’s noisy because it has a large engine and a large twin exhaust. It’s a very fast car. It’s my hobby, it’s my passion and it’s excellent fun to drive. The relevance of the expense is that it indicates why I have to take it for a drive and am not content to leave it to seize up on the driveway during lockdown. I’m pregnant and I hardly ever leave the house. For my sanity and the maintenance of my car it needed driving and it needed opening up and as such, it made a noise.

Report
BruceAndNosh · 20/04/2020 08:32

We live half a mile uphill from a dual carriage way.
Judging by the noise, there's definitely some racing down there occasionally.

It is noisy and fast and loud
(apparent bellend machine)
No needed there

There is virtually no traffic around here, SWLondon, at the moment except delivery vans and some car traffic at what would normally be rush hour.

I have noticed idiots like this - and it’s young men, generally, 2 or more in a car, music blasting, driving fast in a way that they could not usually, as there would be too much other traffic.

The police have posted several times on the local Twitter feed about this.

It is especially dangerous at the moment because we have all got used to walking along in road itself In the deserted and narrow side roads because it is easier to maintain distancing that way. Even on the main roads, where people aren’t walking on the roads themselves as opposed to the pavement, people aren’t using crossings because there is plenty of time to cross where convenient because of long gaps between vehicles. There are also cyclists who would not usually use the main road routes and families teaching children to cycleinshst they see as unusual safety.

Not saying that people should let their guard down, but it has evolved that way quite quickly .

Then these entitled idiots zoom out of nowhere, using the roads as their personal race tracks.

The people in whom it is bringing out the worst are these morons - who have no concern for anyone else - and their their sole fan girl.

I think posters are purposely ignoring what the OP means.

It is not the noisy bike or car driving past on the road, it is the off road / dirt bikes that are just being driven around, so the noise is constantly there, or going out and coming back into ear shot. Driving standards from some have declined as well.

ErrolTheDragon · 20/04/2020 08:42

You don't need to drive it fast to recharge the battery and stop it seizing up, winterwoolies, although you may want moderately high revs to do the job in a shorter distance. If you're going further than you actually need then you can do it slower/lower revs.
