AIBU?

To think my doctor is wrong and also shit?

I'm aware I do not have a medical degree, and she does, but I can't help but wonder.

2/3 months ago went in saying I have extreme period pain, and I'm sweating constantly at night. Cold sweats and I'm drenched so I have to get up about 4/5 times in a night to either wipe myself down or change etc.
She asked how my bowels were, I said fine, she then proceeded to diagnose me with IBS and give me peppermint capsules ??? I insisted on blood tests and they all came back fine.

So as of today, I'm still sweating buckets at night and it's at the point I'm delirious with lack of sleep. I phoned and explained everything, told her (new, different doctor) my periods are still extremely painful etc. She asked about my weight (so I gave her it, and my height) and she said my BMI is close to 30 so I'm obese, and that's what is causing the sweating. I said I've been this weight for years and I'm more muscle than fat etc and she said "I would recommend you lose 15kg and this should fix your problems. If not, come back"

That's it. End of story.

What the fuck?? I can't even register with a new Dr for a second opinion and there's only the 2 above doctors at my practice 😭

Are you overweight or is it muscle? Have you been tested for menopause?

Try losing weight?

Yeah but, with a BMI of 30 you could lose weight and see if the problem is still there?
It seems quite sensible advice.

And the problem with the lack of sleep thing is that almost everyone is losing sleep at the moment - that’s a natural response to the anxiety we’re all facing.

I do weightlifting, so I'd assume a lot of the weight is muscle.

I will lose the weight, but doesn't explain the sudden sweating when I've been this weight for years.

Also the lack of sleep is causing by having to get up and either change or wipe myself due to said sweating, nothing to do with anxiety.

Hard to say without seeing you if you could do with loosing weight. IF you are in fact very muscular, then BMI is bullshit.

Also I'm 27, so hopefully not menopause. I have regular periods too.

Sounds like you have been dismissed without them bothering to look for any underlying causes.

Last year I had a bmi of 31 and a few medical problems, I now have a bmi of 24 and a number of those problems are gone or at least less problematic. It's with a shot, and it's hardly going to make it worse.

Hate to ask, but could it be peri-menopause?

Ah- posted before I saw your update!

Yanbu.

Unless you are very tiny I find it unlikely that that BMI would cause excess sweating.
She sounds like one of those doctors who just brushes off women.
It could be a hormonal issue but she should be investigating that. Thyroid issues have varying symptoms.
Sorry can’t be any help really but just wanted to post to say I agree with you and it must be very frustrating.

Greenmarmalade · 08/04/2020 20:36

You’re totally right, your doctor is shit. Have you googled the symptoms and found any leads?

I'd want hormone tests. Early menopause is unusual but not impossible.
I'm much older than you but I had night sweats and regular periods at perimenopuase.

I agree that is shit, and I would be pushing for a referral to a gynae perhaps. Don't accept this, it's not good enough

Sounds hormonal to me ......not that I have any medical training whatsoever

I've been complaining of painful periods for almost a year now and asked for scans but never get them.

I am utterly clueless on the sweating, but I think there's something wrong with my womb/uterus. Also been TTC for over a year with no luck (obv we've stopped now due to CV)

Tried to find a full body pic but have none, all quite identifying

Yanbu. A bmi of 30 isn't enough to make you sweaty. I think you need a second opinion, although that is obviously very difficult at the moment.

Is the pain only when you have your period and do you sweat more during your period?

Once CV19 is over/we are getting back to normal I'll try a different doctor and see if I can get a gynae referral.

I'm not in denial about my weight, 15kg could easily be lost off me but I'm definitely not massively overweight.

@Doyoumind it starts as soon as the first little bleed starts. Takes about 3 hours to kick in but then it's constant cramping and pain. I take Paramol but can only take it for 3 days then just have to deal with the pain for another 2 days.

Seems like I'm in the minority but I'm quite shocked they keep dismissing your problems just because your BMI is high? Is this a thing? People with a high BMI don't notoriously sweat buckets all night and have excruciating period pain. Yes, they should advise you loose weight if they think it will be beneficial to you, but to refuse to investigate your problems until you have done so just seems wrong to me? Especially if most of your weight is muscle mass. I would just keep going until they take you seriously.
Also, I have a friend who has endemetriosis, and your symptoms sound quite similar to hers. Do you sweat even when you are not on your period?

Hope you are OK OP.

Thank you for the link @greenmarmalade

I'll try cutting out more sugar and refined cards etc, it might not help but can't hurt to try.

If I was sweating as in I wake up and I'm roasting and have to kick the covers off I wouldn't be concerned, it's more that when I wake up and I'm covered in sweat I'm more often than not shivering as our bedroom gets quite cold in the night

Yup your being dismissed by your doctor

What tests did they run?

YANBU.

My dd suffered very badly with her periods and the doctor prescriped the contraceptive pill and it helped. Before TTC were you on the pill, could stopping the pill be causing the symptoms?

It really sounds hormonal. You definitely need to see by a specialist. You need a blood test.
