AIBU to think if you're healthy you should give up your delivery slots

Just thinking it's not really fair if you're healthy, and have a car, to use delivery slots from the supermarket. If you're healthy I think you should just go to the shop… It was different when we were all working and had no time etc etc, but most of us are wfh now and no reason we cant do a trip to the supermarket. Would help sick people and key workers etc by freeing up delivery spots.

I am healthy but I have children with additional needs and my partner still has to work long hours. although I am ‘healthy’ slots would be handy for us!

I have a slot booked next week. If I cancelled it how would I guarantee it’s going to a vulnerable person?

Arent supermarkets doing priority slots for the vulnerable and any leftover slots can be used by anyone? I'm not sure if that's true but someone on here said that was the case yesterday

This has been done so many times on here. The concensus is always yes. I agree about the car thing to a point though, here if you don't drive there are only 2 corner shops within walking distance and no buses currently running. You cant get a full weeks shop and it's expensive; the local volunteers will only help those who are shielding or vulnerable (which is fair enough). What do you do?

Do you mean everyone? You mention key workers- what about healthy key workers?

I’m a key worker, in a position where it’s pretty much ineveitable i’ll be exposed to cv amongst everything else.

I’m healthy at the moment and more than capable of going to the shop. However every time I do i’m putting everyone else at risk, because i’m the one likely to be passing it round.

So I am still online shopping, but less often and bigger shops. Yes my dh is wfh, but because we’re in close contact he’s as likely to have it as i am.

Generally though every delivery slot stops someone going to the shop. The council and local voluntary groups are arranging deliveries to shielders and the vulnerable, so i don’t think it makes much difference tbh.

Boris said use deliveries where possible. It's perfectly possible in my area (no shortage of slots for the last 10 days at least) and one delivery a week is not excessive.

I had an Ocado delivery yesterday which I booked 3 weeks ago when it was all "new" and uncertain. I was never going to cancel it but I definitely won't be looking for any other slots for the future as I don't need them.

I am a key worker with shielding neighbours and no car. I will have to do multiple shopping trips on foot to keep us all in food.

I have my Ocado but it’s only sometimes auto ordering and is very confusing. We’re having to do top up shops when my DH can do it (working long hours).
I can’t go shopping because a) I have DC who won’t be good at the 2m thing and b) I’ve had a cough now for three and a half weeks. Whatever it was has likely gone now and I’m no longer contagious and I’ve started doing short local walks but I can imagine the shock and horror if I couldn’t stop myself coughing in Sainsbury’s (there would probably be a MN thread on it).
I’d still give up my slot if I could guarantee it would go to someone vulnerable but I can’t guarantee that.

I prebooked some slots before it went crazy and anticipation of there being problems. They have been a godsend as I’m in a keyworker role so still working and I can get items for my workplace and my vulnerable mum as well as myself on the delivery. It’s also a 20mile round trip to big supermarket. Means I can limit my exposure to bring into my workplace too.

I get online supermarket deliveries anyway so have only got what I’d usually have.

I'm on the fence. I don't use deliveries because I'm healthy and can go to the supermarket, but I'm also a single parent so have to take my DS and I've been lambasted for that. Can't win either way.

No I don't think you should, as people I know with larger families and family groups to shop for, still have to go supermarket and order online to get enough food.

How is a 2 milk limit or 2 box cereal limit going to help if you are shopping for 6 children and 2 sets of grandparents.

If they did lift limits and there was a normal stock level in all shops then maybe but only if they could still guarantee a delivery to those without cars who needed one.

People should be avoiding the shops as much as possible and deliveries obviously help achieve that. Some people don’t drive so in order to successfully avoid going to the shop daily they probably rely on online deliveries.

YANBU. Anyone who is not in particular need of a home delivery should relinquish their slot for the time being.

I imagine an awful lot of people have. But there will always be the selfish brigade, who will come up with all kinds of reasons as to why they must hang onto their slot.

I have a delivery slot with my monthly pass that I've had for 8 months.

I have a car.

Supermarkets only want 1 person per household shopping. I have a child. I'm a single parent.

Maybe add that to your list of acceptable reasons to have a slot?!

(Hypothetical as I haven't got a delivery slot).
I'm in a role where I've accepted I'm going to be exposed to it and expect to get at some point. So is it bad for me to have a delivery, as someone else could have had to delivery slot? Or is it good as I may well already have it and if I go to the shops I could be spreading it about?

Perhaps but only if the slots they give up actually go to people who need them. I'd give up our slots (we have a recurring Asda slot from before this began) in an instant if I knew they were actually being given to someone who needs them, but odds are they'll just go to someone else like us and rather selfishly I would rather we had it instead of someone else equally able 🤷‍♀️ Instead I am buying stuff for neighbours and friends. Last shop had items for four separate households, so that's four people (at least) who aren't going into the shops. That seems pretty good to me, so we will keep going until there's a method in place for slots to only go to the vulnerable or those in need.

There's still some availability round here anyway.

YANBU. Several friends are going potty to get delivery slots and have no particular need for them. I wouldn’t try to get a delivery as we don’t need it and can shop for ourselves.

I was continuing to do my normal deliveries but I think I’ll stop for a bit now. There’s no real reason why I can’t make a regular trip to the shops. Although - I need to check that my local supermarket doesn’t have a no child policy. In which case I might go back to booking them!

I think most people with slots are also buying for vulnerable people, parents etc, anyway
