AIBU?

To not want a trampoline

We have a fairly small garden. If we bought a trampoline of a size that both kids would use together (because they seem incapable of taking in turns) it would cover most of the grass and we'd have to get rid of our washing line.

I know it's good exercise for them - especially as we can't go out - but it would be an eyesore and ruin the garden/outdoor space.

AIBU and a crap parent?

You don't really want two kids on a trampoline together. The instructions themselves say no more than one at a time. Lots of injuries come from one child bumping into the other.

You don’t have to get oneConfused I don’t have one since when does not having a trampoline make you a crap parent? Didn’t realise they were mandatory

I've thought about getting one but it would take up a huge chunk of our space, and actually my DC's use the garden fairly well for football etc, which they couldn't do if there was a trampoline too.
And two kids together on one is a no-no.

I had one at my old house and after the novelty wore off DD was hardly on it and it ended up being a very expensive cat bed for two cats to sunbathe on. Haven't bothered getting a new one since we moved.

I am enjoying being able to tell them to go out and do 100 jumps before they have a snack though. Had a go on it myself last night and was completely out of breath in a couple of minutes so I do think it's useful exercise! If you use it sensibly and can avoid injuries as you don't want to be rocking up at hospital just now.

Statistically most broken bones in children are due to trampolines.

You're being a very good neighbour though Wink

From having a neighbour with one, I can tell you the noise of the springs will soon be enough to drive you to violence.

It was hours of it day in day out. Thank god the child finally grew out of it.

I'm with you, OP. DD would love one and we do have space, but it would take up a chunk of the garden and they are so ugly! I feel bad as while we are all stuck at home I know she would love it; the problem is it would then be in the garden for the next ten years. Can't face it.

In the area I live it a couple of years ago it seemed like every other house suddenly bought a trampoline.
They all sit there taking up large parts of the gardens & are unused for most of the time after the first couple of weeks when everyone was out having a go on them.
Maybe once a month in the warmer weather some kid will be on the trampoline for a couple of days, then they are abandoned again.

I don't think it will get anywhere near the use you hope it will & it will use a lot of space that will not be able to be used for anything else.

I work in a kids orthopaedic ward. Almost all broken elbows are caused by trampolines. Do not let two kids in it at the same tine. Though we are so quiet we, would appreciate some work to do!

Trampolines are so very dangerous! Both me and my partner are emergency service workers and would never allow our child to have one.
2 children jumping on a trampoline together is just madness. If one stops on the trampoline and the other continues to bounce, it's like landing on concrete never mind them bumping into each other.

My husband hates trampolines with a passion because he used to do x-ray in A&E. Don't get him started on kids riding quad bikes.

Looking down on towns from an the air, you could be forgiven for thinking that they are.

Don't get one. In a garden as small as that you will get totally fed up with the noise very quickly (and so will your neighbours).

A friend's dd fell off her trampoline about 10 years ago. The accident has completely buggered up her knee ligaments for life.

We used to have one, bought by my dad. It absolutely wrecked our grass, was a pain every time we needed to mow the lawn having to move it around, and became the ideal place for my cats to hide under and pounce on unsuspecting birds.

@captainmycaptain. I totally agree with your husband. And as for kids on bikes without helmets.... that really doesn't end well.

I would never allow my kids a trampoline. Too many kids injuries if not used properly.

I thought about getting one now, but DH vetoed me on the basis that now isn't a good time to be going to hospital.

First rule of trampolines is 1 at a time. If you don’t want one don’t get one, you’re allowed to say no to your kids

Thanks all - I'm feeling much better about saying no now!

There are very few trampolines available anyway. or swings. I investigated for DD last week as was feeling guilty.

Quite glad of an excuse not to buy one tbh.

Echoing everyone else. I did trampolining as a child and the first rule is one at a time. I find it madness that everyone seems to have these in their gardens with groups of kids on them all at the same time.

Now I’ve got a kid of my own it’s hard to avoid it as whenever we go to friends houses they’ve got one. Funnily enough mist friends seem to say the are unused most of the time and it’s only when friends come round that they all bundle on together.

We’re never getting one no matter how much DC asks! I’d welcome her taking it up as a hobby at an actual club though!

DS will not be having a trampoline after I nursed a child who lost an eye due to an unsafe spring.
