AIBU?

To not understand clapping for kids

Why are we now doing this? The premise I’ve seen is that their lives have been turned upside down, no longer able to see family or friends. Isn’t that all of us? And surely if they don’t understand why we’re on lockdown, they’re not going to understand us clapping?
Hasn’t this gone a bit far?
I do have kids, and they are most definitely affected, but I don’t feel the need to clap for them especially and they don’t want me to.

I won’t be doing it, I doubt many will. I have seen some kind of dance one going around too?

Clap to cheer kids up?

You might not like it if intend to do it, but it doesn't stretch the imagination much, does it, to work out why?

I'm in Spain, we clap off our balconies every day at 8. Sometimes I do, sometimes I don't. No skin off my cheese.

Think this whole clapping thing has got out of hand now to be honest.

I'm solving this dilemma by ignoring all the virtue signalling BS on social media and doing things which actually help, like volunteering and giving money.

I've seen it suggested. Ignored.

Oh it's crazy. Just give your kids a cuddle and tell them you think they're coping well. Or talk about how rubbish it is but why it's worth it or whatever, just do it for them and not the neighbours/social media.

This is the most ridiculous thing I’ve ever heard of.

My young children certainly don’t need anyone clapping for them. The nearly 1 year old is oblivious and the 4 year old is having the time of his life.

I won’t be doing this, or the dance one or the torch one.
IMHO it just makes everything utterly meaningless. It’s all so diluted and false, devoid of any meaning.

No
Not doing it
People should be downplaying things and keeping a sense of normality

Ridiculous, my DC are happy, content, relaxed and loving their time. They certainly won't be clapped for it and nor would they want to be! The first clap for the NHS was amazing and moving but let's move on now!

It’s going to be like the Soviet Union where no one wants to be the first one to stop clapping. We’ll be out there half the day. Oh, and here’s a round of applause to the butcher, the baker and the candlestick maker!!

Mine will be in bed, presuming it's at 8 p.m. again stupid time to do it.
