AIBU?

Customer service goes out the window when you're clearly an idiot!

This is more of a rant than AIBU, feel free to join me...

So I work in a supermarket convenience store. I was on the early shift yesterday and surprise surprise, people are still ignoring social distancing and essential travel... Just a few examples of people being idiots include...

  • Old people coming in to buy a newspaper
  • People coming to buy lottery tickets

Neither are food or medicine. What do people not understand about essential travel?

  • People coming to the till with a single item... Go to the self checkout FFS 😡
  • People not understanding the 2m distance. You don't need to be peeking over my shoulder whilst I'm dealing with the self scan.
  • People realising there's a queue to get into the shop and then grunting forget it. If you can 'forget it', it is clearly not essential so why the fuck are you out and about?

I was very snappy with a few customers yesterday but I'm beyond caring. I'm not going to stand with a smile while your idiotic behaviour puts me and people I care about at risk!

Close the lotto machine.

Tell people to take a step back before you help them

I don’t think it’s fair to judge purchases. I purchased two Easter eggs yesterday...not essential but I needed chocolate. I also found a load of bread and hand wash!

The people coming to your till may be elderly, isolating alone and a brief chat with a cashier is the only human interaction they have all week.

These are difficult times, we can all try and be a bit more understanding.

@PlomBear you're going to get slaughtered here. You went out just to buy Easter eggs?!

I shouted at my elderly parents yesterday about the newspaper thing.

They are still going out every morning to get their paper, as they have done for 50 years. They live rurally and there is no delivery. They refuse to read news online (don't have a tablet or a smartphone anyway). Mum classes it as essential. I don't. Similar conversation about how she "had" to go to the post office to get a stamp to post a birthday card.

One of my best friends works in a bank and she had an elderly person come in to pay £1 into an account and parents bringing in children to ask about mortgages. The idea of isolation is to protect elderly and vunerable people among others to relieve the pressure on the nhs.

Unfortunately, the need for a chat doesn't mean they are above the rules. YANBU OP. I don't blame you for being snappy. People who think they are special/above the rules are wankers.

LisaSimpsonsbff - if you read my post in full, you’ll see I also got bread and hand wash as I had ran out.

I also live on a military base and I’m staying inside the wire going to the small base shop...the base is on lockdown.

As always on Mumsnet, the drama and emotion runs high.

I do! No one needs chocolate. We were told to go out for essential purchases only. Continue to go out, and making excuses as to why you need to and we'll soo find ourselves under stricter rules.

TheFairyCaravan - also got bread and hand wash as I couldn’t get any the other day...but hey, all pile on to have a go at me! That’s the Mumsnet way!

Surely, if you are out to but essentials, there's a logic in getting non essentials at the same time ? If just for the moral and psychological boost ?

I do too. We're under the same rules as everyone else. The people who work in our shops are entitled to the same amount of protection as all the other retail staff in the country.

PlomBear yes but your post implied you went out for chocolate and just happened to stumble across other items that now deems that shop as an "essentials" shop.

The OP is talking about people coming out to buy a single newspaper, not "they came in for a newspaper and happened to do their full weeks shop while they were there too"!

I’m also a key worker, mainly working from home but need to go into the office as some as the stuff I do is classified and I need to use different software to what I have at home. In a small way it helps keep this country safe.

But yeah, tell me I’m an idiot. Hmm

I think we work for the same company op.
Had my usual 7pm lottery rush last night and people coming in for a packet of crisps or a chocolate bar!!

That's the trouble with supermarkets. They sell so much more than 'essentials'. One person's essential is another's trivial. So if things are available to buy, you are being unreasonable to get arsey with people for buying them. Maybe there should be further restrictions on what you can buy. Cigarettes, for example aren't essential.....to non-smokers.

LisaSimpsonsbff · 25/03/2020 10:32

Getting non-essentials at the same time, in the same shop as essentials is fine. Going out to get non-essentials ('I needed chocolate') and happening to find some essentials as a happy bonus is not fine. How are you finding this hard?!

By no stretch of the imagination is buying Easter eggs, bread and soap trying to visit shops as infrequently as possible.

I really don't think it's for people to judge what we are purchasing at the supermarkets?! If I'm buying bread, milk and rice what difference does it make to anyone if I also pop a chocolate bar, bottle of wine and crisps in at the same time?! Absolute lunacy for people to get uptight about this. As long as we go alone (where possible), keep a safe distance from others, get it done promptly and use self service, contact less, wash hands when home etc, what is the actual problem?

That you're completely ignoring the instruction to go as infrequently as possible? No one should be 'popping in for bits'

It’s not the cashier’s job to entertain the lonely elderly any more. Popping in for a “newspaper and chat” puts both the elderly person and the cashier at risk. It’s not essential.
