Dh and I, like probably everyone have found ourselves glued to the news and social media. I need a mental break and want to find some soothing things to watch/read/do.

Tonight I’m rewatching Pick of the Litter on Netflix which I just found a joy the first time around, and have bought a Maeve Binchy on kindle, but would love some more “switch off” ideas. Aibu to ask for your recommendations

Big fish, and Stardust. My two absolute favourite nice Sunday afternoon movies for a bit of escapism.

Youwonjane Tue 24-Mar-20 21:15:46

Oh I’ve not seen Big Fish - it’s going on the list!

Pollaidh Tue 24-Mar-20 21:17:36

Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day (in coronavirus times that title looks a bit morbid, but this is funny, clever and heart warming).

I'm planning to re watch tortoise in love. Great thread idea.

Youwonjane Tue 24-Mar-20 21:24:49

Going on the list!

The big year is a gentle comedy and I'd recommend Bernie for a funny twist chuckle

BakedBeeeen Tue 24-Mar-20 21:31:35

Downtown Abbey film. 😁

Youwonjane Tue 24-Mar-20 21:38:55

These are all great - it’s like I need a nice warm bath for my brain!

Greydove28 Tue 24-Mar-20 21:48:54

Me too. Im exhausted by all the bad news!

Youwonjane Tue 24-Mar-20 22:04:28

Think the whole of downtown might be on amazon actually. May do a rewatch.

I saw a thing on bbc2 a week or so ago - nice man with lovely voice bimbling around Irelabd looking at non violent wildlife. This: www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b08jprh0 It was very gentle and lovely and just what I needed.

Youwonjane Tue 24-Mar-20 23:24:09

While it would be wildly inappropriate to put it on tv now, one of my most restful things to watch was “Britain’s Best Walks”

BloomedAgain Tue 24-Mar-20 23:27:39

Jonathan Creek. So clunky but escapist.

HarrietThePi Tue 24-Mar-20 23:29:05

Not sure if any of these are your kind of thing, but my comfort watches are The Good Place, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt, The Thick Of It, Miranda, Doctor Who, Cuckoo, Merlin, Only Fools and Horses. I think I'm going to give Downton Abbey a try, and The Detectorists too because I keep reading about them on here.

covetingthepreciousthings Tue 24-Mar-20 23:29:05

I've started watching The Detectorists on BBC iplayer, I've found that quite soothing.

HarrietThePi Tue 24-Mar-20 23:29:24

Oh yes Jonathan Creek is a good one

Youwonjane Wed 25-Mar-20 00:15:03

@harrietthepi literally love everything in your list except Miranda but haven’t watched cuckoo so will give that a go!

Honeyned Wed 25-Mar-20 05:10:18

Have you read Eleanor Oliphant? So funny! And the Aisling books I think are good and I'm normally an out and out thriller/domestic noir girl. We all need some lightness right now x

MadamePewter Wed 25-Mar-20 05:14:07

@Pollaidh I love that book!

Dita73 Wed 25-Mar-20 05:18:22

Rewatch Sense and Sensibility. Always a winner

Dita73 Wed 25-Mar-20 05:19:30

Actually forget that! I just remembered the bit where Kate Winslet gets the fever! Apologies. Withnail and I is always wonderful

Thepigeonsarecoming Wed 25-Mar-20 05:22:16

What type of books would you normally read?

Shoxfordian Wed 25-Mar-20 05:22:45

Books: PG Wodehouse, Marian Keyes, Sophie Kinsella shopaholic series,

Films/TV: Friends, Love Actually, how I met your mother, Disney films, the good place,

MadamePewter Wed 25-Mar-20 05:37:02

The book Three Men in a Boat was recommended to me for soothing reading and despite my scepticism I absolutely loved it. So funny
