AIBU?

AIBU to think things feel a bit apocalyptic?

Covid-19, unprecedented flooding, raging bushfires, Syria, state cyber warfare, rise of populism, stock market crashes...not looking good is it? Genuinely felt anxious last night after watching the news.

YABU = get a grip
YANBU = start prepping

are you young? I grew up in the cold war - that was scary - this just seems like global warming + life + the way viruses evolve - nothing especially scary

While I think there's always been times like this, it is unnerving. But I have to think about my parents and their bout with the dirty thirties, WW2 and the Cold War - that must have seemed like the end times too.

I was thinking that on my into work earlier, that it feels like the start of the end. Probably isn’t, but it is how all those apocalyptic movies start...😂

I'm not looking forward to another financial crisis or to potentially being ill (am ill at the moment), but 'twas ever thus. Global warming is the real danger.

It's not looking great but I have seen it all before.
In the 70s we were all shitting it because scientific consensus was that we were heading for an Ice age.

You forgot to mention the plague of locusts: Food fears grow as swarms of locusts reach Uganda and Tanzania

I am a natural pessimist so yes, I do feel that way. BUT I am also 47 years of age and in that time I have seen many, many disasters, wars, floods, fires, epidemics, awful diseases and suffering etc so I do have to try an put it in perspective and tell myself that, unfortunately this is life, at times it’s bloody harsh, always has been and always will be. It’s just that now with the internet and 24/7 tv we have it in our faces instantly and all of the time which makes it feel unrelenting.

Yes, you are unreasonable, but I am saying it in a nice way Smile

It is important, IMO, to bear in mind how accessible news and information is. Rolling news 24 hours a day 7 days a week, social media, sensationalist headlines who aim to sell papers and generate clicks. It is vital, especially in the current climate with the fear-mongering about Covid, to not take information you read online/see on Facebook/Twitter at face value, and to do your own research. Remember, "Things Aren't As Bad As They Seem" doesn't sell papers.

None of the above was intended to be patronising, so I hope it doesn't come over that way.

Try to calm down. There are always global issues that can feel really scary if you let them. I remember most recently is was Ebola, 10 years ago it was swine flu, and in the 90's mad cow disease. Countries are often having wars or feel like they are on the brink of war.
I don't think it helps that this Autumn and Winter has been particularly wet and stormy. This has obviously caused much flooding which is awful for those affected; and for those who are not, it is still horrible to watch. But the storms and rain will pass eventually and hopefully this summer will be more settled, the floods will recede and people's lives will move on. This time last year the area I live in was finishing off an unseasonal heatwave and the year before it was covered in a blanket of snow! The weather is certainly keeping us on our toes these days!
Just try to take each day at a time and try not to over think it (much easier said than done I know!)

I do believe it boils down to perspective, which is hard when most of what we read is driven by fear and written in highly dramatic and emotive ways.

Worrying won’t fix it will it?

Honestly get a grip. Some people lived through world wars and famine, this is not the same.

Report
PlomBear · 28/02/2020 15:01

Right now millions of people are starving to death. The world isn’t a nice place. It never has been.

I'm always pretty cynical about doom-mongering but I know what you mean, OP. I'm not at all scared, but there is certainly an air of apocalypse about the news and weather atm!

Prepping is being a hysterical maniac.

The news is always bad, don’t watch it if you expect happy news.

Do people sit at home wailing and gnashing their teeth over this? I have anxiety but not to this extent!

Report
NearlyGranny · 28/02/2020 15:08

If you add in the current craziness where sex and gender has come adrift from biology and half the popation daren't call themselves women any more, it's got all the makings, I reckon. I was just thinking this morning that if all this were the opening scenes of a film, it would be in the apocalyptic or at best dystopian genre. And I'm not young, not by any stretch!

It feels a bit like the end of days definitely!
I’m always terrible at winter and get really depressed, so I’ve booked a sunshine holiday to cheer myself up. Now unsure if we’ll be able to go due to the virus.

@Nowayorhighway I am not actually prepping, the tone was supposed to be a bit tongue in cheek. I'll keep watching the news thanks, it shows me many people are still living through wars and famine.

I know there have been wars and pandemics before, but the clmiate emergency does genuinely feel like something we haven't experienced before and all the science says could be catastrophic.

@PlomBear I think there is a mid way between sitting at home and gnashing teeth and taking an interest in the world and worrying a bit.

I feel the same, but I've always been a worrier, lived through the cold war too in a perpetual state of fear. It's just that now there seems to be a multitude of things.

YANBU op, I said to dh the other night that we were going through the beginning of the end of days! Obviously I hope I’m just being stupid and vaguely hysterical (although I’m far from hysterical - actually quite calm really) but I can’t shake this feeling that everything is going to come to an end over the next 100 years.

Then I got my knickers in a knot yesterday because I couldn’t log into my pension account to raise my monthly contribution. 🤷🏼‍♀️ Ah well.
