AIBU?

For contemplating leaving mumsnet?

In the wake of the death of Caroline Flack, I have realised that enough is enough and I need to reduce the levels of negativity in my life.

I don't want to be part of anything that contributes to the downfall of any individual's mental health.

Not a big thing, but I deleted my daily mail app (I shouldn't have been on there anyway as it a truly disgusting newspaper).

I am also reducing my social media presence.

I have noticed that despite how much we highlight the impact of trolling and words online, mumsnet has far too many posts etc that are bullying and negative.

I don't want to take away how supportive this place is, but for some this is a hub for them to bully and make other people feel small.

Am I over reacting to delete my mumsnet too?

Does anyone else feel the same?

YANBU.

It's only a chat forum, no one will/can force you to stay.

I think if it affects you negatively then it's probably fair to agree that you should get rid.

Thinking the same. It's so negative sometimes.
Look at the active threads and you will see how negativity bias thrives.
I keep meaning to stop but think I am addicted! It's on my to do list though!

There's a whole topic for flouncers...

I totally get your reasoning and if that's how you feel that's how feel

However, if you want to leave. Just leave.

You need to be aware though, you can negatively impact peoples mental health without trying to.

You cant always control his someone reacts to you

@mynameiscalypso

LMAO at "flouncers". This isn't the army. People aren't conscripted to be on here.

It's a wide forum. Choose what you read on here but the good outweighs the bad in my experience

YANBU to leave MN if it makes you feel better. The Meghan Markle threads (was there 17 or something) and more recently the Caroline Flack threads have really shown some posters up in their true light.

Surely you are better staying and posting positively?

Yanbu to leave Mumsnet if you don't enjoy it. Do whatever is right for you. Hope you feel better soon (and good call on deleting the Daily Mail app).

Social media including Mumsnet isn't compulsory, so if you think it's not good for you don't do it. Not sure why you needed to start a thread? Confused

gindaddy there’s a topic called “flouncer’s corner”.

Wtf are you on about, “the army”?

I imagine the OP started a thread to see if anyone else felt the same?

Report
thewigglewalk · 17/02/2020 17:08

Yeah, I was just interested in seeing if anyone else felt the same way I guess?

I agree, I didn't need to post, but I was interested to see if I was alone?

Had no idea there was a flouncers corner?? 🤷‍♀️

I am not sure what Flouncers Corner is for really. Grin It's not like anyone on here is going to beg anyone to stay.

Can I also add, that the death of CF, whilst sad is not some sudden phenomenon.

There are dozens of stories every week across the country about Jane/Joe public dying by suicide and it's often attributed social media but the fact is it's poor mental health. Yes, other people's negativity is a factor but these illnesses are not always rational/logical and the likelihood is that they were a contributing factor but not the only one.

You can't live life people pleasing and pussy-footing around differing opinions, curiosity and open discussion not should we expect anyone else too.

We shouldn't need a celebrity death to adjust our moral compass and the whole "be kind" thing is wearing thin.

Don't be an arsehole? Fair enough but not everyone is a shining beacon of positivity - I personally find those people fake and tedious.

I didn't realise there was a Daily Mail app. I take it you didn't sign up for news but for celeb type stuff?

In that case, yes, you need to examine what you are exposing yourself to.

Or contributing towards.

Flouncers corner is for a vent and then a roustabout off you fuck then then sloping back.

Wow. OP feels that Mumsnet a bit nasty (my word) and is considering leaving and announces it, just to...y’know...encourage a bit of reflection from those who peddle the nastiness. Cue bunch of ‘do one, then’ type replies. FFS this just proves the OP’s point and put a cherry on top.

Completely feel the same , there’s a good bunch of people on here but I often feel reluctant to post something with the worry of backlash or sarcastic comments from strangers , and there are so many negative posts . I wondered if I deleted MN does it take your old posts down too?

Report
pigsDOfly · 17/02/2020 17:16

Obviously, you're not being unreasonable to contemplate leaving MN.

There is a lot of negativity and nastiness on here at times and unless you can see it for what it is and let it wash over you without affecting you then it's probably a good idea to stay away.

If it upsets you then you'd be wise to cut it out of your life. I've had periods when I've stayed away when it's bothered me.

It's sensible to do what's best for your mental well being.

@itsemily no, your posts remain but I think you can request that they remove them for specific reasons.

This is not an airport, there is no need to announce your departure.

Report
Sparklingbrook · 17/02/2020 17:18

I think you can ask for all your posts to be removed but no idea how long it takes or whether it's easy.

Would have been good to have a Hide Poster option the last few days.
