AIBU?

Coronavirus are you worried?

So this virus has infected 600+ already and seems to be picking up pace. It’ll be in the UK any day, if it’s not already. AIBU to think this is going to have a big fallout and are you concerned?

And off that 600 isn't it that only 17 people have died?

That's a tiny percentage, that's like....

2.8%

In other words if you get it, you have 97% chance of surviving.

Not worried, I think it’ll be like swine flu. Most people who get it will get the flu, and then will be fine after a week or so. There will be some people for who it will be more dangerous for - immunosuppressed people, elderly, etc - it would be them I’d be concerned for.

I am quite worried because I just had a baby and the idea of him getting sick is very anxiety inducing to me. I've had to stop watching the news!

I can only hope it resolves quickly.

At the moment they think at worse (at worse) it will have a 2% death rate far less than SARS and Ebola. It’s also hitting mainly elderly patients the hardest and those who are immune compromised much like the flu.

I think it could be worse than swine flu (which I got as it happens) in that many people could get it and cause issues such as less workforce and school shutdown etc.

My experience with swine flu was 2 weeks of feeling awful truly awful then 6 weeks more to properly recover. I think this could be similar worse than a cold and on a par with flu as to how it makes you feel

I really freaked out about swine flu beyond all reason, because at the time I had a toddler who was prone to nasty chest infections. I went on a news embargo until they stopped talking about it.

Now both my children are bigger and tougher and I feel OK about this one, though I can see the media are doing their damndest to scare everyone again (it's not just 'coronavirus' according to the BBC, it's 'the deadly coronavirus')

I think the world is due a virus to bring down the human population might give planet earth a bit of breathing space.
Not sure this is it though.

I know a nurse who has had patients with this virus and she said the symptoms are mild and they got over it easily.
Don't worry about it, wash hands regularly, keep clean. Hygiene goes a long way.

A bit worried yes. Also annoyed that that action wasn’t taken sooner to limit spread.

Report
sonjadog · 23/01/2020 19:10

Not really. It is a bit soon so be worried about it.

Report
abbidabbi · 23/01/2020 19:10

Nope. It's about as worrying (and deadly) as the flu, which is obviously worrying for the elderly, frail and immunocompromised. For most people it shouldn't be worse than flu. Many more people have already been treated and discharged than have died. The main reason they are being so particular about quarantining and things is that it would be ideal to nip it in the bud before it reaches the scale of flu which we really don't have much control over.

Whatafustercluck · 23/01/2020 19:19

No. It's a small mortality rate. If I were elderly or immunosuppressed I might be more worried, but that's the same for practically any virus/ infection.

Nope not one tiny bit.

Bird flu, swine flu ect we all lived through this.

Although accademicaly the world is overdue a epidemic such as the Spanish flu to cull the population down(I don't want this to happen)

Not as such, no, I think like many such viruses (a bad bout of ‘flu for example) if you’re reasonably fit & well & seek advice quickly if you’re worried you should be fine. I did find it morbidly interesting when they were saying how much air travel has increased since the SARS outbreak.

Not worried.

These things are always blown massively out of proportion.

I've had the lesser corona virus and was hospitalised with it. So although people are surving this, it still isn't nothing to worry about.

I know people who are immune compromised, so it is a worry.

Many more people have already been treated and discharged than have died

Have you got a source for that please @abbidabbi? It would be very reassuring to see.

Glittercandle · 23/01/2020 19:40

I’m worried my son will get it - he takes immune suppressants as he has a kidney condition. Not worried about myself or the rest of family.

"For most people it shouldn't be worse than flu"

It honestly is.

A bit worried. In cases of outbreaks the first group to be infected are medical workers. Nurses and doctors, especially school nurses. I have close family members who would be exposed before a pandemic was even recognized. It is scary.
