AIBU?

to expect people to read at least the gist of a thread before

warthog · 30/08/2007 12:33

jumping in with something that has already been thoroughly discussed, resolved and the thread has moved onto the real issue?????

esp if they start off by saying 'haven't read the whole thread but...'

feckin at least skim the thread!

Yes you are
Just because someone else has offered an opinion doesn't mean you can't too. If there is a thread with hundreds of posts that you don't have time to read you are still entitled to respond to the op

Haven't read the gist of this thread but.....

Surely there are more important things to get annoyed about?

Report
HorseyWoman · 30/08/2007 12:36

Yes, YABU. Freedom of speech, freedom to offer an opinion that was asked for...

YABU

fine to respond just to OP. There aren't any 'rules'

Report
niceglasses · 30/08/2007 12:38

Too many rules, too many rules. You'll ruin it and yes Yabu I' afraid.

Anyway, I think its more than fair to just read OP and reply to that - thats the original question isn't it?

Feck me if I'm wading thru 300 replies. Can't you just ignore if its been said before, or not bother reading - or is that against the rules?

also sometimes people are dashing off to do something but want to post on the off chance they are the first person who has mentioned a particular thing - especially if it's urgent

i think that's a bit much, just 50 lines "I must read the thread before posting" would have been fine
Hang on a minute, just contradicted myself. Oh well- blame it on the hormones

YABU but if people jump in and answer the original op without consulting the rest of the thread and how it has moved on, they should not feel offended if they are ignored on the thread.

Sometimes I start a thread, and following discussion actually change my mind on the subject - shock horror. It can be a little wearing if people come in much later, don't read the debate which has proceeded, so I sometimes just skip over them.

YANBU. It drives me crackers.

If someone has enough interest to respond to a post (and think their opinion is worth posting) then surely they should skim the replies. A little self-important to do otherwise IMHO.

YABU

Sometimes I'd the first to open a thread and type my post... and I take that long to write it, chopping and changing etc, that a tonne of people have posted before I click submit.

Report
DaDaDa · 30/08/2007 13:50

That's different though ELF. I think what warthog means is when people start their post 'Haven't read thread', and give a 'controversial' opinion for 2 days too late, which is the equivalent of shouting the odds very loudly in a quiet room!

I haven't read the whole thread, but there are 23 posts on here and knowing Mumsnet I'm guessing at least 15 of them say "I haven't read the whole thread, but ...".
