AIBU?

To think my employers are a shower of shits

Who don't know how to manage a fecking thing in their lives.

Where do I start

  1. got told at the interview it was a 35 hour contract - wrong. I'm doing 18 hours on a good week.
  2. two days after the interview, I got told it was £8.63 pay. I was being paid this from when I started to 01/12/19. They reduced it to min wage, with no warning. I queried this with my manager several times, who told me various reasons (it's a tax thing, it's just a mistake etc etc) I went to head office who told me I've had a postcode change 🤨 which prompted my money to be reduced, they haven't acknowledged the fact I was given no warning and I still haven't been paid what I was owed! (Acas told me I'm entitled to the rate of pay of 8.63 until the point I was made aware of their reasoning, a good 8 days pay and they aren't giving me it)
  3. they cancel my shifts with 10 mins notice. Or 4 hours notice if it's a good day!!
  4. I've just found out they've put a colleague of mine on holiday!! Didn't ask her, they've just done it!

I'm thoroughly fed up, working 3 shifts this week and only 1 is 7 hours long. I've looked most places possible for a new job but I'm not having any luck. I've tried speaking to the managers but they don't care and I'm not sure what else I can do 😴

What did your contract say? That’s insane. Is it retail?

Report
confusedandemployed · 16/01/2020 18:33

Tbh just get out. There's nothing to be gained by sticking it out with employers like this. They will never treat you properly.

Report
Merryoldgoat · 16/01/2020 18:36

I agree with @confusedandemployed

Employers like this are just not worth the hassle.

Report
ByeFeliciaa · 16/01/2020 18:37

No not retail, resturant work
I can't leave, I will be sanctioned by UC Sad

I only got a contract after the pay thing was sorted out so I didn't have a leg to stand on. I tried to argue that paying me at 8.63 was surely a contractual agreement in itself but no they wouldn't budge. I feel horribly let down.

Well op does say she’s been looking for other jobs but no luck as yet! It’s not easy for people to simply walk in to new jobs these days.....

Yes OP they are rubbish but not sure what you can do that you haven’t already. Fingers crossed a new job is just around the corner for you

I'm not sure what, if anything that I can do either. I broke down to one of the managers saying I had to use a food bank over Christmas. That I couldn't afford to have the job as it's making me worse off but he just shrugged and walked off.
Another person at work only has 1 shift so I'm grateful I've got 2 more but I feel like I'm jumping through hoops for very little.

Are they a big chain?

My partner says they don't care, jobs like what I'm doing are ten a penny and if I walked out they'd have me replaced by the end of the week which makes me feel super worthless.
He is trying to find work as well but I was enjoying being able to get out of the house and have something that was mine.
Last week he had an interview for 42hours a week but got an email the next day saying unsuccessful.
We are both trying our tits off, we've both been to work clubs to get our CV checked over and I've had some great interview tips from them so I feel more confident if I got an interview.
I just wish I could make the managers see that I'm struggling, I need extra hours but I've needed the hours since I started I should have known 😓

Name and shame.
Can you do the minimum shifts and claim benefits until you have better luck getting a new job?
Keep applying and don't put yourself out when you are there.
Hopefully they'll let you go and you can fall back on UC until a new job comes up x

Actually, do not name and shame. You don't need this tracing back to you.

Nothing I can say except keep on trying - you are right it's awful, but I hope you can find a better job soon.

but I feel like I'm jumping through hoops for very little.
You are - and I know it's hard but it's valuable experience; unfortunately there are some shitty workplaces out there.

Ah the joys of zero hour contracts and the effect on universal credit. It's disgraceful zero hour contracts haven't been outlawed yet.

Have you both tried agencies? Where I live there are tens of factories who have immediate starts for warehouse and production operatives.

Eurgh it's disgraceful that employers can still get away with this kind of thing. I really hope you manage to find something better soon.

I am so angry on your behalf. It's absolutely disgraceful that you have to come off UC for a zero hours contract.

Keep looking; I hope you find an employer who appreciates you. Or at least gives you a proper contract.

I'm not even on a 0 hour contract! My contract says 15 hours

My partner has years of warehouse experience and the job he just got turned down for was a warehouse one!
Tried agency but the only warehouse work is 'as and when we need you' - my shifts are different every day and every week so that's no use. And agency only have cleaning atm so I did apply but not heard anything back.
I've tried Nando's, wagamama, cleaning, £ shop, Lidl, William hill, various bakers, argos - all them since Monday (applying via indeed, Facebook sites, DWP find a job) 😩

Ok so I was supposed to be in work 3-9 today.
They phoned at 2 asking me to come in at 4 instead. I was at a job interview so couldn't answer. So agreed 4 was fine.
Just had a fb message, I'm now not needed 😒😒😒 I tried to argue and say it's fine I'm close by so can come in for the last few hours "no need it really is quiet" I just want to go home and cry

The same friend who was put on holidays without notice has been given 1 shift of 3 hours next week. Her contract says 16hours!! She does have problems understanding that the employers are now in breach of contract and doesnt know what to do!

So if your contract specifies 15 hours then they pay you a minimum of 15 hours a week? (Unless sick or on holiday)

Report
ByeFeliciaa · 17/01/2020 16:13

Well I thought it was, if your contract says 15 then they HAVE to give you 15 or over otherwise they breach the contract?
Mine says 15-30 and like I said in my OP, I do 18 on a good week.
This week I'll have done 13 😒 so I'm guessing they are breaching my contract too

Is there wording in your contract that says hours are subject to change due to "business needs"
