Friend lying about phone banking being down

On Sunday the 1st of December I was out with a friend and she couldn't pay for any food or drinks as the nationwide phone banking app on her phone was not working she said the app said the service was down

Not to worry I thought these things happen she never takes her bank card always just her phone - not something I'd be happy to do but there you go.

Anyway I paid for everything food and drinks, it wasn't lots of money we weren't anywhere very expensive at all and it's not a problem paying for her. However I was speaking to a friend yesterday about switching banks and this came up and she said she had no problems at all with the app on Sunday.

Anyone else confirm if they had problems on Sunday? my friend has a little bit of form for lying I'm starting to be doubtful now!

Didn't mean to add vote button!!

Dd's card wouldn't work on Friday which is nationwide, but mine worked... which is also nationwide. so maybe it was part of a glitch.

I don’t think you’re ever going to get proof. For one thing you haven’t named the bank app, for another the connectivity problem may have been local to her phone, or a problem in a specific geographic area. Has she paid you back yet? If not, she’s being a cheeky cow. It’s one thing subbing someone temporarily, it’s another expecting them to pay for stuff with no expectation of paying them back. If she hasn’t paid, ask her for it now!

Gah. I hate people who do this. “Oh my apps not working”, “Oh my phones being really weird”, “I didn’t get that message”. CFs who use these excuses and that’s all they are because they don’t want to/can’t be arsed to pay/respond.

Could she have been out of money at the time?

Not right of her to go out if so...

Maybe text her asking to send some money towards the night over now?

Oh, just seen you said ‘nationwide’ but as it didn’t have a capital letter I assumed you meant the bank was one which was, well nationwide!

Iggleonkupsy Fri 06-Dec-19 08:48:07

darkly she has named the bank. It was nationwide.

ByeGermsByeWorries Fri 06-Dec-19 08:48:25

Are you sure it was nationwide? NatWest was down most of Friday.

Pretenditsaplan Fri 06-Dec-19 08:48:28

I will point out just because some people app wotk doesnt mean all people apps work at that moment. Me and my sister can be sat next to each other on the same banking app and one will work and the other wont. Yes sometimes theres big outages but sometimes it really can be spotty and random

Iggleonkupsy Fri 06-Dec-19 08:48:59

Haha cross post darkly

Maybe it was down, maybe she’s a liar. But it’s madness to go out with no back up. Technology doesn’t always work. She should have emergency cash with her.

Horehound Fri 06-Dec-19 08:51:13

But have you reminded her to just wire her share over to you? If not, do that now

KaptenKrusty Fri 06-Dec-19 09:03:50

Doesn't really matter if it was down or not / if she was lying/had no money - just request she pays you back now - send a request for the amount she owes! Or suggest she takes you out to repay the favour! smile

My First Direct app is quite flaky and unreliable. It randomly doesn’t work when there’s no nationwide issue.

But then I’d never expect to pay on my phone because of this.

MotherHeggy Fri 06-Dec-19 09:18:41

I'm with Nationwide. The app was working over the weekend. Even if it isn't,it doesn't stop you using your card.

Wtfdoipick Fri 06-Dec-19 09:19:16

if I try to use it it works fine but currently everytime I log onto my online banking app I get a message saying contactless payments aren't working, There is some sort of glitch going on but not sure exactly what but the glitch is the message and not payments itself.

Whattodoabout Fri 06-Dec-19 09:21:13

Presumably she’s using Apple or android pay on her phone which has absolutely nothing to do with your banking app.

princessTiasmum Fri 06-Dec-19 09:23:51

If it was Natwest, yes phone banking was down, so she may have been telling the truth

hawaiianturtle Fri 06-Dec-19 09:29:01

Just because the app is down it shouldn't of made a difference to Apple Pay

Mermaidtissues Fri 06-Dec-19 09:29:09

My nationwide card was with held at a Cash machine at the weekend due to a technical issue. I didn’t try the app though

Pinkiii Fri 06-Dec-19 09:29:34

I’m with nationwide and I always have problems with the app being down for maintenance, very annoying, but you know your friend to know if its a lie or could be the truth

HeadSpin5 Fri 06-Dec-19 09:32:25

Agree with other posters that you’ll just never know. Banking apps can be glitchy - i couldn’t get into mine the other day but it was my phone causing the problem (app needed to be updated before it could be used but I couldn’t remember my password to allow update). Another customer of same bank prob had no issues. Agree too it’s not really the issue- provided she paid you as soon as she could

uggmum Fri 06-Dec-19 09:33:13

I work at a bank. I was on shift on Friday. 3 members of my team said they have tried to use the app and they couldn't log on. I used it and it was fine.

This outage affected thousands of customers but not all of them.

So I would assume that your friend was telling the truth

Singsongbird Fri 06-Dec-19 09:40:58

If she's paid you back then shes NBU. If she still owes you then shes BU.
