but i love them because they remind me of childhood! hanging from every corner of the ceiling and meeting in the middle of the ceiling around the light fitting. i haven't used any since i left home at 18, but i think my mum still uses them. some parts sellotaped together still 😂 they 'smell' like Christmas. also foil tinsel .. any foil decoration really 🙈🙈

what Christmas decorations do you find tackiest, whether you use them or not?

LOVE those decorations OP. And have fond memories of your hanging style. M personal hate is coordinated Christmas trees, where it's all one theme or colour. It's Christmas, slap it all on old, new, begged and borrowed. But no plastic bead rows. They are awful.

Ooooh I love those!!
Anything tinsel really, that tinsel smell, you can't beat it!
Also paper chains.
I have fond memories making those as a kid, I've bought some for DD and DS so we can do them together and hang them in their bedrooms like I used to when I was a kid.

They are horrendous lol but each to their own, I hate tinsel too and beads and bows lol.

My tree is not coordinated though, it's all individual decorations and some home made.

I used to buy them at the market and put them up in our living room in the 90s Grin

I don't like beads on a Christmas tree. I grew up with tinsel everywhere but I don't have it now. Just lights and baubles on the tree. DS has all the tat in his bedroom, he loves tinsel!

I grew up in a no tinsel household. The first Christmas that dh and I lived together he put these up (as well as about 300 miles of tinsel). It was living in fantasy Christmas of me when when I was 8. I also couldn’t come up with a valid reason why there should be no tinsel so now it’s a weird mix. My nostalgic Christmas feeling is for a classy themed tree, paired with Dhs tinsel wonderland. We’ve defined never had 2 trees oh no lol.

I mean...I have a porcelain figure of santa and mrs claus having a steamy bath together, surely that's the tackiest christmas decoration...
Sexy santa aside I love those foil things. Reminds me of the school canteen at christmas!

I'm on the lookout for them atm. Apart from amazon and eBay I can't find them in any shops. Love them they smell like Xmas.

We had these when I was a child. I loved them. We had four that went from the corners of the living room ceiling towards the light in the middle, and then in each “quarter” in between the garland things there was a hanging ball shaped one that you had to unfold and clip together. One of them was blue and silver and sort of frosty looking and I thought it was the most beautiful thing ever.

In a previous workplace, the management gave us what we considered a miserly budget with which to decorate for Christmas. In protest, we spent it all on the worst made-in-China poundshop tat we could find.

When we put it all up, the place looked amazing!

We had those too and my dad would stretch them out v far to get them to meet across the ceiling ... it would all take hours. My Nanny and Grandad had those paper lanterns, 100s of them pinned to the ceiling!

Decorations today are so much quicker to get up and down!

This will totally out me to anyone who has been in my house. But when I was a child in the 80s we had this cardboard sleigh and reindeer decoration that I absolutely adored and it never felt like it was properly Christmas till my dad put it up every year. It got lost when my parents downsized and I hunted high and low for another one in charity shops, ebay etc. Eventually I managed to find a photo of one via google which I posted on fb pleading for anyone who had one to give or sell it to me.

Next thing my MIL sends a whatsapp message. Oh yes we have one of those in the loft you can have, I’ll bring it next time we visit. Turns out my husband grew up with the same sleigh and reindeer.

Anyway it’s back on the wall now reminding me of my lovely daddy every time I look at it. It’s tacky as fuck and totally out of place with the rest of our decorations and I don’t care.

longleggedgal they have them in The Range if you have one of those near you!
I don't remember having them in my house but they were definitely at my grandparents', strung from the corners into the light fitting in the middle, just as OP says! I wouldn't use them in my home but I do love that memory.

@longleggedgal A Christmas shop that has popped up in your town centre just for Christmas might have them or discount stores like Poundland.

I personally dislike them but the kids like them so always put a few up.

I did have them as a kid growing up and I didn't like them then either. I also remember when i was really little we had crepe paper ones which actually i prefer and the honeycomb decorations.

I did a no tinsel Christmas tree 8 years age when DS1 was 5. He was utterly horrified. Now every year he insists the tree must have tinsel (he’s 13 now). In fact the DCs insist on decorating the tree themselves. So our tree has multi coloured flashing lights and lashings of tinsel.

I’m not even sorry. I love it. Xmas Grin

DH always decorates with those foil garlands. Never been my cup of tea but over the years I've got used to the, and it doesn't feel like Christmas until they are up🎄🎄

We had them when I was a kid but even my mum stopped using them before I left home in the early 90's!

I LOVE these! I would still use them but DD is allergic to tinsel so I can't have these in the house. We make paper chains every year instead...it just doesn't feel or smell right! Tacky but wonderful!

The range, Wilko and Asda all sell the foil tat.........will say tho they're a lot flimsier than their 70s counterpart........I try to reuse each year but they often rip.
