I was amazing to see this card today in a shop! Could you imagine the uproar if this was any other social group! Shock

People "up North" aren't a social group.

I'm from up North and think this is hilarious! Where did you find it OP?

Sorry, social group was a poor choice of words but couldn't think how else to write it!
It was in an independent shop in Bury St Edmund's, Suffolk

It's a joke, as with most funny jokes its politically incorrect.
My Husband got one for his birthday about southern softies. Hes not lost any sleep over it, as of yet.

Pity it’s Bury St Edmund s. I might have bought some for northern colleagues. It’s a joke.

It's funny. In fact if it was about other social groups it would be funny too. I'm from the North, everyone I know would laugh at that. We can laugh at ourselves Wink

Love it - and I’m from the North too.

Northerners are down to earth, hard as nails, GSOH, poor, depressed, brave
Southerners are chicken shit, afraid of cold, soft, affluent, no SOH.
Tired but fairly harmless stereotypes. I’d hate that card for its shit lazy humor rather than being offensive

I think it's fucked up. North South divide is real, especially in terms of government funding, representation etc. Lower North might be alright but the levels of deprivation in the North East are nothing to joke about.

I live in the north east and I think it's a brilliant card!

I remember preparing reports about deprivation around the UK at the start of the "austerity" war. I'm not comfortable with this card. But my first reaction was a wry smile.

It made me laugh. I need a trip to Bury.

That’s brilliant! I would buy it! (Yorkshire lass here!)

Sorry this made me laugh. It's like a card I gave my sister a few years ago but it was worded " Jeremy and Patricia likes to think of those less fortunate than themselves and every Christmas raised a toast to the poor people in council houses" 😂.
Before anyone starts bashing me it was tongue in cheek-I've lived in council houses (and been ver grateful!) but my sister and her husband had just bought an ex council house and her and I have a warped sense of humour x

I’m from the north east! Not even sure what you mean about deprivation... I assume you’re talking about Middlesbrough but the rest is about standard!

I think it’s quite funny, but I can think of funnier northern stereotypes!

Yep, it's a joke.... I find it funny and I'm a northerner Grin

I can see it's a joke, I promise I'm not devoid of a sense of humour :) it just amazes me that the north-south divide is still a thing when there's affluent and deprived areas all over the country!

Next time I go to Bury I will take orders... Wink

Bury St Edmunds is Up North!
It's the other side of the M4. Grin

It's funny. There are probably others about the south.

I think it's funny and I'm from up north.

I think the reason I find it funny is that because the butt of the joke is clearly the deluded poshos "sparing a moment to think of the people up north", not the actual people in the north.

Does this refer to north of Brighton

I think it's funny.

A lot of humour relies of stereotypes. Most people can appreciate a stereotype without assuming they're necessarily factual.

I'm not so sure the council house variant mentioned upthread is funny though. I definitely wouldn't buy or even smile at that one. Like all other areas the 'The North' is, in the real world, a huge area with a full range of wealth from billionaires to people financially struggling. But people in council accommodation do (on balance, I know there are exceptions) tend to be on a low income and/or vulnerable. I think there's much more vitriol and snobbery laid at the door of council house tenants than Northerners.

My dh would love this, what with me being from up north, which is a constant source of hilarity for him.

At least it’s not about monkeys bring hanged on beaches, could be worse. I think Lock Stock did no favours to the north/south divide. 😂
