I think it's fucked up. North South divide is real, especially in terms of government funding, representation etc. Lower North might be alright but the levels of deprivation in the North East are nothing to joke about.

Sorry this made me laugh. It's like a card I gave my sister a few years ago but it was worded " Jeremy and Patricia likes to think of those less fortunate than themselves and every Christmas raised a toast to the poor people in council houses" 😂.
Before anyone starts bashing me it was tongue in cheek-I've lived in council houses (and been ver grateful!) but my sister and her husband had just bought an ex council house and her and I have a warped sense of humour x

I think the reason I find it funny is that because the butt of the joke is clearly the deluded poshos "sparing a moment to think of the people up north", not the actual people in the north.

A lot of humour relies of stereotypes. Most people can appreciate a stereotype without assuming they're necessarily factual.

I'm not so sure the council house variant mentioned upthread is funny though. I definitely wouldn't buy or even smile at that one. Like all other areas the 'The North' is, in the real world, a huge area with a full range of wealth from billionaires to people financially struggling. But people in council accommodation do (on balance, I know there are exceptions) tend to be on a low income and/or vulnerable. I think there's much more vitriol and snobbery laid at the door of council house tenants than Northerners.
