AIBU?

To think I shouldn't have had to pay the hairdresser twice?

I'll try and explain exactly what happened so that I can get a true picture as to whether IABU or not! This may be completely normal.

Last week I went to a new hairdresser (because she has just opened in our village and we have never had one before- much more convenient too). I had a full head of highlights and a trim. At the end she said that my roots hadn't lifted as well as the rest of my hair (which had had previous highlights) and that they were still quite 'warm' (her words). She then said see what it looks like over the next couple of days, and if you aren't happy come back. Her exact words. I paid £70 which is on the higher end of average for down here- I normally pay £60.

My roots were quite gingery after a couple of days and there was a noticeable difference between them and the rest of my hair, so I made another appointment. Totally not her fault as I understand that it's not an exact science.

Went to my second appointment today. She redid the highlights on the roots but they still didn't lift, so she put a toner on to blend it all in. The colour wasn't what I had originally asked for but I thought hey ho, at least it all matches now. I decided to buy some fancy conditioner and went to the till.

She charged me £70 again!!! It wasn't a mistake as we had been chatting the whole time about the previous visit. I stupidly paid because we live in a small village and I would bump into her constantly and also two other people I knew were in the salon at the time. I was also being a wuss.

I'm thinking of going back tomorrow to ask for my money back. AIBU?

I think it’s harder to go back for a refund and you should have disputed it at the time.

Even if she charged again for the colour - which she shouldn't have - you didn't have another trim so should have been less. Definitely think you need to ask her, she offered to sort it out.

That's true- I didn't have the cut twice.

I think you might be right that I can't now dispute. My H thinks I should go back in tomorrow. We don't have spare £70s floating about so I should have just stood up for myself!!!!

Why on earth didn’t she use a toner the first time round? Confused has she just qualified?

She sounds crap!!!! She did it wrong you shouldn’t have had to pay

Definitely go back! She should have corrected it FOC! IT was inconvenient to go back.
She deserves the chance to put this right and if she doesn’t feel free to share your experience, can you message her on Facebook? Saying the colour isn’t right and you weren’t sure why you were charged again when it was a correction of the first appointment- the awkwardness is less than how annoyed you will be with yourself for not saying anything!!!
I have dark roots and if I’ve ever said oh it’s not quite right they are pleased you go back to have it corrected and they can sort it.

I don't know argh!! Why was I so bloody British about the whole sodding thing.

If she wasn't in the village I would have been braver though. Her kids are in the same small villiage school as mine (she moved here when she opened the salon which is why I don't know her).

I would go back, you might not get anything back, but if it's a small local business they will want their reputation left in tact I bet. It was unfair to charge you again.

If you think it might make things awkward, then you might have to leave it.
But I would never go there again.

I would go back and ask. If she refuses to refund you then just advise her you are very sorry, that you won’t be returning and won’t be recommending her to anyone in the village, and if anyone asks you will tell them why, ie she didn’t do a good enough job first time and charged you full whack to put it right

Just say that you didn’t want to say anything in front of the other customers. Makes it look like you were trying to protect her reputation. But I think you should go back.

Something similar happened to me recently.

My stylist “bumped up” my blonde by using a darker toner than usual. I explained that I didn’t like my hair & it wasn’t what I wanted, so she said we’ll do a bleach cleanse and tone it back to the normal colour. Great, I thought, until she charged me for it🙄

Also I didn’t say anything because I would have felt awkward too.

I would phone her up or go in when there is no one there, i would say that i was unhappy with being charged twice and had expected her to correct it foc i would say that i had felt embarrassed about making a fuss in front of other customers and mindful of it being a new local business.

I would go back and talk to her. Tell her you didn't want to raise a fuss in front of other customers, but that you really don't feel you should have been charged to sort out your hair when you'd already paid for the service. She was fixing it, not doing something new.

Oh no, how awkward.Even though I'd be fuming I'd probably take the easier (wuss) way out & leave it as you're in a small village. BUT I'd never go back again as you're definitely in the right.

You might have not had a trim but have taken a conditioner so I guess one for the other in the price ?

I can see why it's harder to go back but I don't think you have a lot to lose going back. She has at least as much need to keep things friendly between you as you do. She shouldn't have charged you. If you tell everyone it's a great colour but it cost you 140 quid they aren't going to think much of her and if you tell them she screwed up and then charged me to fix it they aren't going to think much of her. So go back in, tell her you know you should have raised this at the time but were too shocked at even being asked to protest but you've had a day to think about it and you think it's really off both because she got it wrong in the first place and because she offered to fix it without mentioning that she intended to charge you again. On top of which, even if you'd agreed to pay for a second set of highlights you shouldn't be paying the same as for highlights and a cut.

Agree with plightofthealbatross I would do that. You could telephone her if that is less stressful ?

I had this with an updo. When I’d asked how much was the updo going to cost me. She said £50. I said great. We had two trials. When I had it done on the day that’s £150!!! I paid. Cos I didn’t know what else to do. But it ruined my evening. I explained that I don’t understand what happened. She gave me half back.

Same as PP, could you turn it around and say you didn’t want to make a fuss in front of other customers. Or if the salon was empty you could say ‘oh silly us, we got carried away chatting and I paid twice, silly me’ tinkly laugh

Could you send an e-mail? Definitely say something, no way should she have charged you for correcting the colour!

Should add that I have had this happen to me and did not have to pay to have it rectified. In my case my highlights were too contrasting as she had used lowlights that were too dark. She suggested I leave it a few days to settle and to come back if I wasn’t happy, re-did it, and gave me some special restructuring stuff as my hair was then suffering.

That's a lot of money to pay twice and you shouldn't have had to pay again. My 14 year old daughter had her hair coloured a few weeks ago and hated it and they did it again for free and wouldn't let me pay again ( I wanted to as I was embarrassed).
