AIBU?

AIBU to make a fuss about missing cash?

I had a short thread about this in chat but want more views. Will try to keep it short without drip feeding.
It was DHs birthday at the weekend, my parents and in-laws, being old ( but generous) gave him cash in a card, a fair amount, not a fiver. He also had some cash he got from selling something he didn't need to a friend.
Life has been a bit dreary recently and I have been very tired ( menopause sleep issues and worry about children who are struggling ATM).
DH gave me all the cash to buy myself new clothes and anything else I needed ( much needed) I was very touched.
Stupidly I kept the cash in my purse, ready to take to the bank ( which entails a special trip to town these days).
I went to our local village Co-op, during the year time rush after a stressful day, and somehow managed to leave my purse in the basket at the self service till, I didn't realise until the next day. From what I can gather an unidentified lady found it in the basket and handed it to a member of staff and I collected it the next day, minus all the cash. It doesn't look as though it left the shop.
I fully admit it was a problem of my own making but taking the money was a crime and the shop staff have not been very helpful beyond expressing sympathy. At best they added to my negligence as they left the purse behind the till, and they didn't check for my address, I live virtually across the road. At worst one of them took the cash.
I called the non urgent police number and they made noises about checking the CCTV but I haven't heard back and I'd totally understand if it wasn't a priority.
I just feel very down about it, I have known some of the staff for years ( my son used to work there too) and have shopped there virtually everyday for 20 years!
Do you think I would be unreasonable to try harder to get the staff to do something, get the manager to check the CCTV?
I think I would actually be relieved if it showed some randomer taking the money., I hate to think it was a staff member.
I obviously feel very shit about losing the money, DH was sad not angry ( v nice man), it can't be replaced ( don't feel like I deserve it now anyway), we aren't on the breadline but we are self employed and cash flow can be erratic and the tax bill is due in January.
Sorry, that was long.

I'd follow up with the police because the manager is much more likely to check the CCTV if the police are involved.

Yes, I probably need to keep on at the police, it feels awkward when you know how busy they are. I know I'm not going to get the money back...

Don't feel awkward. If you're the victim of a crime you're the victim of a crime.

If perpetrators aren't found out they'll carry on and escalate. If they're caught they're much less likely to steal again.

Sorry, OP, this really is despicable.

Don't feel awkward about keeping on at the police - they are there to prevent, solve and help prosecute crimes, however stretched or underfunded they are or feel themselves to be. Theft isn't suddenly not a crime because murder exists or because it's harder to investigate than speeding.

That’s horrible. Speak to the manager.

Yes, It was just bonus money for me but what if it was an old person's pension money?

The Police are stretched and underfunded, it’s not something they just think. Jesus 🙄

That said, this is a pretty easy win. Log the crime, check the CCTV and complete the investigation. Have you actually had the crime report taken?

I would go in to the shop, tell the manager you want to view the CCTV before you contact the Police. Why you left without checking it is beyond me, this could have already been dealt with.

GiveHerHellFromUs · 21/11/2019 10:28

@Yesmate they're not allowed to just show the public CCTV

Report
Yesmate · 21/11/2019 10:31

I worded that poorly. The manager should have checked it whilst she was in the shop. I would not have left.

Report
diddl · 21/11/2019 10:31

Why would you expect them to check for your address?

Who would admit to looking in a purse?

I do think that cctv should be checked though.

I’m sorry this happened to you. But the police in my area aren’t even investigating car break ins/vans being broken in to/ cars being stolen as they don’t have the resource.

Report
GiveHerHellFromUs · 21/11/2019 10:32

@diddl so they can return it, like any normal person would?

Report
Cauliflowerpower · 21/11/2019 10:33

I'd certainly be in the shop and make a fuss until someone had looked at the CCTV footage, whether or not they let you look at it. It should show what happened to your purse and when.

Report
GiveHerHellFromUs · 21/11/2019 10:34

@LtJudyHopps not true. They don't investigate because of lack of evidence but if you tell them you have CCTV or a number plate they'll look into it.

It's much easier to identify someone on a shops CCTV because there are a million ways to track them down.

Oh that's horrible op. Sorry that's happened to you. Yes I would push to get the cctv viewed.

I went into a nearby co-op and accidentally left my card in the reader. Walked a couple of minutes home, went back for it. Must have been five minutes tops.

In that time my card was cloned and later that day there were multiple charges made.

It could only be a member of staff who did it, but the company had seemingly no interest in figuring it out. I’d want to know if it were my employee. Strange.

So sorry this happened.

My auntie who was visiting from abroad lost her purse that contained all of her money as well as her bank cards. Luckily a neighbour found it and had a quick look in it and clocked the foreign cards. Handed it back later that morning after we had a stressful time looking for it. We were so thankful and he was so pleasant about it. It was also a relatively new neighbour. The point is, that is what honest law abiding people do. It shouldn't take too long to review the cctv and even send out an appeal for the person via social media/local news. Whoever took the money is a thief and the police should follow that up even if it takes a bit if time. You would think the shop should be more helpful too . I hope this gets resolved for you soon

You need to speak to the manager, they will want it sorted. Go in explain what happened, ask if they could check their cctv. Don't accuse don't threaten etc it doesn't sound like you have spoken to the manager yet, so they may know nothing about it.

Report
theemmadilemma · 21/11/2019 10:44

Speak to the Manager ASAP just in case they overwrite the footage.

Then follow up with the police again.

Report
wigglybeezer · 21/11/2019 10:46

The manager wasn't in both times I went, it's a small coop and doesn't have a full time manager. in and they aren't allowed to show me the CCTV.
Apparently my home insurance should cover me for about half and I will check this out but it probably means I'd have to get my MIL and my Dad to confirm what they gave DH, I'd rather continue wearing my past it clothes than face that!

I'll face the embarrassment and attempt to get hold of the manager.

Well I don't have my address in my purse.

Just thinking in this case though, someone looks for address, cash is later known to be stolen-who would want to be possibly accused of that?

I would have thought that most people realise pretty quickly that their purse is gone, so easiest just to put it to one side & wait for owner ro return & claim.

OP seriously, if you want this resolved you need to do something. Just popping in and hoping there is a manager isn’t going to do it. Get contact details, contact Head Office, contact them on social media. No one is going to fix this for you.

I'd be pressing the manager too, they are been very lax.

Sink girl that's really bad.
I've just worked out how much money my family has spent in that Co-op over the years, must be at least £50,000! Makes me feel better about making a fuss
