I have to dsc 4 and 6, twice this weekend they used the word fart. The first time I was looking after them on my own so told them it wasn't a word we use. Today they used the word again, DP didn't seem to bat an eye lid (although did later agree with me). I think if they were older I wouldn't like it but would accept it more. Is this inappropriate or am I being a prude?

Fart, FART. I thought you were going to say fuck or something worse. Jesus wept, it’s not a rude word at all.

You’re seriously overreacting there.

It's for their parents to decide what is/isn't appropriate.

Do you have DC's of your own?

You're really going to need to develop a thicker skin and chill out otherwise this step parenting is going to be hard work for you.

Surely trump, with all its presidential associations ,is far worse.

wineandroses1 · 17/11/2019 17:10

Actually Op I wouldn’t like this either. It’s a crude word and I would persist in telling them and DH that they’re not to say it as it’s rude.

I don't understand - what works are they supposed to use? Or should they just pretend it doesn't happen? Confused

Well there are plenty of other words for passing wind Hmm popped, blown off, etc. Fart is fairly vulgar. I don’t let my children say it, but then they still throw out the odd bugger off so can’t say I’d be too upset by it

My friends 4 year old said queef the other day.

What word would you prefer? I don't see how fart is offensive. I just looked it up to see if I missed something (English isn't my first language, and my kids have always said fart) and found the word is derived from the old English word 'feortan' meaning to break wind. I think it's an okay word to use.

You’re over reacting. My 2 and a half year old picked up “fucking seagulls” from some scutter on holiday in Devon and gleefully shouted it every time we saw a seagull.

What else are they meant to say?!

Break wind? At 4??!
Trump?! Ugh
Guff is quite good.

But what’s wrong with fart?

Fart is OK in this house but I have told my DC that outside of their home it's trump as some don't like the word fart. They excepted it and do well to remember.

It's not the end of the world OP so please do not over react just explain in this house it's trump or whatever you prefer.

Really??!

They used the word "fart". Twice?!!

First off I'd be contacting SS and reporting their mother.

I honestly thought it was a thread about teenagers using abusive and disrespectful language towards you!!

Fart HmmGrin.

If that's the worst you have to deal with from them, you'll be doing OK.
