AIBU?

I honestly don't understand why anyone who cares about anyone other than themselves would vote Tory.

Surely most people have older people in their family? Or kids?
Really baffled as to how anyone sane can excuse this government 😢

That’s probably because your main source of media is the guardian.

I have elderly parents and kids and vote Tory.

I don’t see how any sane person could vote for the Corbyn the lunatic. I prefer to vote for a party that has some understanding of basic economics and doesn’t bankrupt the country every time they are in government.

Always vote Tory best for me and my family.

There are so many of these fucking threads it so boring, so judgemental and so hilarious that people cannot possibly conceive that the whole point of the political system we have is so people can vote for different people. There is no bloody right or wrong ffs, people vote in their best interests for the party which is relevant to them.

I find all the far left political shaming over voting Tory and pressure to vote for otherwise actually quite facist.

I agree op. The conservatives will always be the nasty party, no matter how they try to rebrand themselves.

I'm afraid you threw away any credibility the post might have had by leading with an opinion piece from the Guardian

As a rule of thumb, the truth is generally somewhere between what the Mail prints and what the Guardian does ... but it's rarely found exclusively in either

Do you need to understand why other people vote the way they do?

Report
GoosetheCat · 15/11/2019 15:27

I honestly don't understand why people can't mind their own business and accept people vote differently. My best friend and I hold very different political views, and neither of us care because, in all honesty, it doesn't matter. I vote for what I feel is best for me and my family.

You vote how you feel is best, and I'll do the same.

I see your Guardian and raise you The Sun, The Express, The Daily Mail.

There are many issues to consider but for anyone who wants to remain in Europe then I urge you to vote Lib Dem. Brexit can only be a disaster.

I spent 26 years as an NHS nurse and Dh is a Dr so no chance of either of us ever voting Tory!!

About 30 years ago my mum told me that if they voted for themselves and our family they would have voted Tory all their life. But they don't, they vote for a better life for everyone.

NHS waiting times the worst they have ever been.
National debt has doubled since 2010.
Councils going bankrupt.

From the party that claim to know how to handle the economy!

MrsMaiselsMuff · 15/11/2019 15:32

missyB1, in many constituencies there is no point in voting for the LibDems. If you want to vote tactically, look at who is most likely to beat the Tories for your area.

Case and point.

I agree OP.
But I have seen on previous threads on MN lots of people say they only vote for which party benefits them and their family.
I don't, but I don't know how common that is.

Yeah, I don't care how people vote but I don't know how anyone can still swallow the line that the tories can handle the economy...no-deal Brexit is practically policy for them and years of austerity hasn't done anything to reduce the deficit. The tories we have today are not what they once were.

Report
BlueMoonRising · 15/11/2019 15:34

The tories look after the people that have, because that also protects their own interests. So other people that are well off will vote for them. You can't blame people that haven't seen what reality really is for other members of society for not understanding their issues. That works both ways.

The majority of tory voters will not have used food bank, or had a problem with universal credit that has meant they have gone hungry, or have been affected by the bedroom tax. I haven't been affected by those issues either, but I do know people that have been. It's very easy, if you don't know them, to write those people off as wasters or scroungers, and put the blame on them rather than the system, when the reality is they are usually hard working people that have fallen between the cracks.

The tories are no better at balancing the books than the Labour Party, despite people believing that they are due to their austerity budget. The national debt has risen significantly since they got into power.

Fwiw I won't be voting Tory or Labour. Other parties are available.

People know what they see. Some people haven't ever seen what it's like to really have nothing.

Not a Corbyn fan, but Boris is truly terrible.
When you see him meeting the public it's so obvious he couldn't give two figs about anyone but himself.

I really care about the NHS and it won't survive many more years under Tories.

(As for posters who think the Tories are good with the economy and stable - where have you been for the past 9 years lol!!!!)

Oh and my personal belief, despite deep hatred of our current government, is that there is absolutely nothing wrong with voting for your own needs and priorities. The rest of society, apart from children of course, have their own vote.

Yes fair point. Our town is a marginal seat between current Tory twat and Lib Dem. Labour haven’t got in here for many many years. I think the Tory guy will be ousted this time because of his voting record in parliament.

You're right, OP. But lots of people will be along to tell you you're not.

Absolutely, I don't understand this idea that somehow voting in the best interests of you and your family is a bad thing. Surely if everyone did that then the result would (in theory) benefit the majority.

Surely if everyone did that then the result would (in theory) benefit the majority.

I now feel compelled to add a caveat that I do believe certain members of society should be provided for by the government even if they are a minority, so I would understand the flipped argument that we have some obligation towards others.
