Freaked out

I'm not feeling well today, and having trouble sleeping.
Whilst laying in bed thinking, I heard a strange noise downstairs. I thought the cat might have brought home a mouse etc so I pop downstairs and have a look. Can't see anything or any sign of cat. Check the back door and the cat flap is open, all the way, stuck open.
So I shut it, and as I turn out the kitchen light the house phone rang!!!
My goodness it scared me - but because no good calls come at night I answered phone. No one there initially, and then i hear a tv with what sounds like a scary film playing in the background.

I've hung up and put the phone handset and base on mute downstairs.

I'm now upstairs writing this message so I don't feel so alone!!!!

What’s your favourite scary movie??

Hope you’re ok op x

I’d put all the bloody lights on, check the doors, draw all curtains and probably not sleep for rest of the night to be honest. I am an utter wuss.

More than likely was just coincidence though. Don’t know what your local police dept is like. Could ring and report a disturb@nce.

Keep cat in at nights, get the flap a lock.

Hope you feel better soon.

Omg I wouldn't even step foot back upstairs!
This gave me shivers!
Not to scare you but isn't the phone call thing what they done in scream?
Hope you're okay OP. Definitely get your cat flap sorted so only your cat can activate it open!

Oh no.... that is something that would freak me right out.

Good thing to post to find some company. I tend to turn on a couple of extra lights and then a very innocent and happy audiobook to focus on. Sorry that you’ve had a scare.

Hi.
Normal day today, but when I got home, all the rocks in my front garden have been moved. They're roughly where they were, but they've been turned over or put back crooked, like someone was looking for a spare key :(

The call had no voice, just a background noise of a film.

I've got the cat inside with me tonight and put a piece of worktop (off cut) against the cat flap.

Are you ok?

Make sure your phone is charged and beside you at all times. Might be worth calling 101 and just letting them know something isn’t right so something is logged and you are known if you need to call 999. If you have a nice car or anything or watches or large amounts of cash put it all at the bottom of the stairs out of sight from a window but easy enough to grab if anyone does enter it’s better they can just take it you don’t want them near you.

Oh that sounds scary! Could you ask a friend to stay?

Report
TooSweetToBeSour · 07/11/2019 22:34

I’d be asking my neighbours to keep an eye out for any people around your house, and definitely make sure doors and windows are locked (don’t leave keys in the locks!). Maybe leave a light on timer downstairs to go on and off at random?

It’s possible someone was trying to gain entry via your cat flap - with a long piece of wire (coat hanger) it’s very possible to open a door this way.

The phone call could have been to see if anyone was home.

Add onto that the rocks, which like you say, could be looking for a key, yeah I think I’d be getting a burgled alarm fitted and probably calling 101.

Creepy!
Also leave the tv on and maybe a light downstairs.

Hope your ok.

Have you got a lock on your bedroom door Op? Take your phone to bed if your not there now x

And could you maybe also think about some sensor lights, if you don't have them already? And until you can get a proper burglar alarm fitted, maybe think about a fake box? We lock the catflap at night when the kitties are in and then don't open it until breakfast time.

We've also just managed to get our smart sockets working with Alexa and other apps so we can turn things on remotely as well.

The cat flap thing freaks me out, I just googled and people really do try and get in using wire!!

If I leave a light on, do you think it would put anyone off trying to get in??

I think I need to get a bit tech savvy.

My son has just moved to university, or I'd have asked him to sort out a sensor light.

The cat keeps meowing to get out, but he's going to have to get used to being indoors!

Amazon sell indoor cameras with sensors on that you can plug in and position anywhere in the house. Alerts your phone if any movement. May be reassuring whilst you are at work. About £30ish.

Be careful not to leave keys out in the same room as the cat flap. when i was younger and forgot my house keys I'd regularly use a bean pole from the garden through the flap to hook the keys off the side. same goes for the letter box

Have you posted before about the rocks being moved?
