AIBU?

Elderly couple on train

Initial thoughts were what utter twats they were especially after hearing that the woman in question is heavily pregnant. I then however saw the unpixelated photo and the poor woman who wouldn't move looks poorly. AIBU to have a little sympathy for them now??

Link worked for me but took me to the daily mail.

If she was too ill to move, she should have said so, not just said that reserved seats don't matter.

From the article:

Once Amanda consulted the train conductor on Tuesday afternoon she was offered four seats in first class with her children

So all's well that ends well. Article is the usual inflammatory tripe from the Daily Fail.

She had pre-booked the seats. Rude young people turn into rude old people. I wonder if they would have allowed their pre-booked seats to be taken from them.

That is really bad, but at least they were offered seats in first. Some people are so rude!

So long as we're all suitably outraged one way or the other why does it matter who we think is right/wrong?
The fact is this was put on SM to benefit the person who made the post and it was put in the paper to benefit the paper. There is no benefit to either the old couple or the young family, in fact there is only negativity so all a bit pointless.

The older woman doesn't look poorly at all.

They were sitting in reserved seats. You don't do that.

You can see the reserved signs above their seats, I often pay extra for reserving a seat. I am glad they got moved to first class. Imagine it was the other way round, horror of horrors!

I don’t think she looks poorly. Clearly well enough to walk past the priority seats for those who need them and walk down half a carriage to get to one of the few and far between seats with a table. She’s just selfish, rude and entitled.

@LochJessMonster

Rude, entitled people annoy the fuck out of me

There. Corrected that for you.

Stop with the ageism.

Report
BIWitch · 23/10/2019 14:12

And that goes for you, @brummiesue too. The age of these people has nothing to do with it.

Yes, they were rude and entitled, but there are plenty of young rude and entitled people too.

YABU. They don't even look that old. Rude couple.

Is this the couple that refused to move out of the seats that the pregnant mum had booked in advance?

It is a shame that the conductor didn't enforce the seat reservation system

Older couple were in the wrong, but why put a photo of them on social media? Social media equals the baying mob - they will be identified and most likely hounded. I think it was completely unnecessary to take it any further, especially considering it was resolved by the train company.

I'm not averse to a bit of public shaming if someone behaves like an arsehole - it might lead to better behaviour in public in the future.

YANBU but this is MN and anyone over the age of 65 can do no wrong and behave however they like and if you do anything other than regard them benevolently then you're ageist and mean 🙄

It’s not ageism to say you find older rude people annoying just as it isn’t ageism to say there are plenty of young rude and entitled people too.

I read it as descriptive.

I had the same once with my elderly grandmother. Ignorant people wouldn't move, had a right go at us... the horrified look on his face when the conductor moved us to first class, apologised profusely for their "horrific attitude" and got a clap from surrounding passengers who were still staring at them when we walked away was totally worth the ten minutes of stress...

firawla · 23/10/2019 14:18

How can you tell she looks poorly when she’s pixelated? I have no sympathy if they just stole the reserved seats and wouldn’t even engage in discussion about it, they are absolute twats then whatever their age. Shame the newspaper did pixelate their faces out, they probably wouldn’t feel so smug having their faces shown off to the world. It’s rotten behaviour

I work in Cheltenham, and there's a comment on local press from someone else on the train........apparently the train was a few carriages short so all reservations were cancelled. Which is why the people were sat there...........

Whatever happened, it's not right to have put these people on social media. And the way that girl is looking at them in the photo is disgusting - not behaviour to be proud of.

I'm with the mum of three. She went to the trouble of booking seats. The seats are here for the duration of the journey.

Maybe young entitled people don't annoy the fuck out of her.
