If ever there's a 'function' thread about a party, wedding or gathering that is up for debate it's ALWAYS '5 long hours away'.

"Been invited to a child free wedding, it's 5 hours each way"

"Mil is complaining she wants us to visit more often, it's 5 hours away"

I'm going to be BOLD and say I think Posters exaggerate this for max effect

eeehh for us it's a 4.5 hours driving non stop, but we don't have a car so 6-8 hours on the train or 12 hours plus on the coach. I wish it were just 5 hours.

5 hours is easily, south to north, south to west, ect. And why bother going on a maps thing to figure it out for the sake of a forum.

It's 5 hours driving for me. West Yorkshire to South Devon.

It's because 4 or less hours travelling time and Mumsnet will be saying people are silly for even questioning it. Most of Mumsnet do a 4.5 hour commute every day 8 days a week don't you know? Anyone who dares to be a bit dubious about a lesser travel time is just being ridiculous.

It's 12 hours to our next family function on a Scottish island, provided the ferry is on time (no airport on said island), from South West England.

But It's true though.

Many years ago we went on a Bank Holiday week road trip:

Surrey to Devon - took five hour
Devon to Gloucester - took five hours
Gloucester to Yorkshire - took five hours
Yorkshire to Surrey - took five hours

For our holiday this year we drove from central Scotland to Yorkshire, Saturday daytime and it was a five hour drive with two under five!

@StCharlotte how did you make Devon to Gloucester take 5 hours??? You can get from Gloucester to the furthest part of Cornwall in less than 4!

I've just put "5 hour journey mumsnet" into google (yep, I'm bored too) and there are indeed an extraordinary number of those threads. :o

The other favourite is where the ex-wife has moved away and the children have to be collected EOW. It's nearly always "a 3 hour round trip".

My husband drove from our house in Portugal to our house in Wales, it took him 5 hours each way. Not including 1 overnight stay, 1 night on the ferry, it took him FIVE hours.

And yes the driving for SC threads and Ex moved threads does always seem to be the obligatory 3 hours.

Slightly nearer than a function but always a six hour round run.

If I set off right now to visit my DS in East London Google says 3 hours 50 minutes. With daytime traffic, more like 5 to 6 hours, not allowing for roadworks. Train is quicker, but much more expensive if there are say 2 to 5 people travelling.
