AIBU?

To not go again until I get paid ?

Hi all,

I tutor two days a week. It takes me an hour to get there .

I tutored on Tuesday , and she normally pays me on time by an app. This time however I haven't received everything . I asked as a reminder on Thursday and she apologized and said she'd send it that day, but now it's Saturday and I still haven't received it. I don't know how to ask again, as it makes me feel awkward .

My next tutoring session is on Monday - would it be unreasonable for me not to go ? It takes an hour and I rely on the money, but I don't want to go again and not get paid . Thanks

Tell her you haven’t received it. It might not have gone through for some reason.

If you've been doing this for a while and you've always been paid in the past, then I would still go next time. There might have been a problem with the App.

Does she owe you for 2 days now then?

I'm a tutor and i insist on payment in advance for this reason. I think in your situation I'd message and say that if you've not received full payment by Monday morning you'll assume they no longer want tuition and will be offering their place to someone on the waiting list (even if you don't have one).

Send a message asking that they confirm the payment is made “before we’re due to meet again”.

You could always ask her to check the payment went through if you genuinely think there might have been a problem with the app.

Ah sorry I see you reminded her on Thursday, not tutored again.

Just remind again and insist on payment in full before you make the journey again. I don't know why parents think it's ok to do this. We are all busy ... but I suspect they don't forget to pay for their Tesco shopping or the electric bill!

Yes tell her now that you need payment or you will not be able to attend Monday's session.

I wouldn’t just not turn up. But I’d send a message today saying you hadn’t been paid yet and wanted to check what had happened and to find out if they wanted you to continue on Monday or not.

The app is automatic and it's e transfer so she can see money straight out and gets an email notification , as do I.

I will ask again and if I don't receive I will not attend . An hour is a long way but I do it for the money. No point doing it again and be out even more money if she doesn't pay up!

Thanks all

What leads you to believe she won’t pay if she was always prompt before.

Just send a message, "Hi, just to let you know that money didn't go through. Can you make sure you sent it to the right account? Thanks."

Issue one more reminder. People do do this unfortunately. I've had previously prompt parents simply disappear without paying.

If someone doesn't pay, then still doesn't pay after being reminded then I don't blame the OP for thinking that she is it going to pay.

Hello - tutor here. I had this exact situation last year. I didn't go for the third time - as the amount of money was racking up!
Send another reminder - I said something like "hello there are now two payments oustanding, I am sorry but I will be unable to come for a lesson on Monday unless I have received payment by Monday morning"

It worked for me. People are busy, and forget, and mean to send payment but don't get round to it....but I don't do freebies.

Just ask politely for the money again. If you state there must have been some sort of error then you won’t appear rude. If she is still struggling to pay then you could suggest that she gets some cash to pay you with on Monday. If she’s reluctant to do that then there’s a red flag for you and suggests that she has problems paying you.

@mindreaderofdarkthoughts Yes but please do let her know before hand than you want come of you are getting paid.

I would ask again - especially in case she is on the 3 network... lots of problems this week.

I would text her and say payment hasnt been recieved. And if it hasnt appeared by Monday then you cant tutor that day.

Maybe make it a thing that you get payment before you tutor.

DD had a tutor, we had to pay cash at the end of each session. It was a PITA as we live rurally but they were worth the effort and we just accepted it was part of it.

You shouldn't have to remind them twice. If they haven't paid by Monday, don't go until it is cleared. And then I'd ask for payment after each session......... don't let it build just in case they don't pay.

What leads you to believe she won’t pay if she was always prompt before

The fact that she hasn't paid since Tuesday, despite a reminder on Thursday.

Op I'd text her and ask her for payment by this evening. If she doesn't pay then you don't need to go on Monday but I'd still hound her for the money owed. Let her away with not paying on time once and she will likely do it again. Message her asap.

YANBU. Bullshit people are busy and 'forget', they're raise merry hell if their boss 'forgot' to pay their wages on time and had to be hounded for it.

Whilst bank transfers make life a lot easier it’s also a lot easier to forget to do it than it was to get cash out. If she was out or busy when you sent the reminder it’s very easy to think “I’ll do it when I get home” and then completely forget. If she’s always paid promptly before I’d send her another reminder, I bet she’ll be mortified she forgot. (peri menopausal, does it show?😀)

Jeezoh · 19/10/2019 16:37

I’d message her and tell her the payment for the last two sessions hasn’t gone through and you can’t attend on Monday until the payment has cleared.

Leave it at that and check your bank account on Monday. Sometimes transactions are delayed over the weekend.

You say you rely on the money and you don’t to lose a good a steady client over a misunderstanding.

I would wait until lunch time on Monday and if the money is not yet in your account just send her a text saying you have not received the payment and asking her(politely) if she wants to continue with the sessions.

That shall kick her into paying if she wants you to continue but gives her an opening for formally stopping the lessons if she cannot afford them or is not happy with the service.
