Restaurant bill

We are staying in a hotel as part of a training weekend. All accommodation, breakfast, lunch and dinner is included. At check in the receptionist confirmed this again.

We took a seat in the bar and asked the waitress if there was a set menu. She said the full menu was available and dinner for two was to the value of fifty quid.
We ordered, ate, paid the reduced bill as it was over fifty.

Later the waitress called our room to say she’d made a mistake and it was in fact a set menu. We should have been seated in the restaurant instead of the bar and given a specific menu only. That she could not balance the till in the bar until the fifty was paid.

DH paid by card to cover this amount. I didn’t mind at the time as the rest of the weekend is paid for. But that means the meal was paid for in advance by the company and then again by ourselves?

AIBU to think that as it was their mistake that we should be refunded or given a voucher?

I should say that when we sat at the bar we gave our room number so the waitress could check that we had dinner included in our package. She confirmed and told us it was fifty credit.

That is her mistake not yours. Speak to the manager.

You've paid it now so it's going to be hard to get it back but I would at least speak to someone higher up then the waitress to get the money refunded. It's their error so they need to cover the loss.

Kinda sounds like a scam in a way. Someone called claiming to be the waitress and had your DH gave his credit card details...

I'm sure it's all legit but maybe check that credit card statement

You're claiming expenses, don't see the problem.

No way would I pay if it's their fault. I would speak to the manager.

What the fuck? The waitress - not a supervisor/manager - calls and demands your help for HER mistake so she can balance the till, and you just pay up?
I think you’re mugs.
Having said that, I also think she’s taking the piss and you need to get on to a manager and kick up a fuss.

@inwood

No they aren't. The company has pre-paid for the weekend, or will be billed directly. The OP only needs to pay for anything she orders which is over the amount the company have set. In the case if dinner, the amount Is £25 per person. They went over so paid the e tea themselves but have now also paid that £50. They can't claim it back because the company have also already paid.... The problem is the company paid for a set menu and the OP was given the full menu to choose from. The hotel can't misappropriate the funds to pay for meals which the company havnt signed off on, so the waitress just got OP to pay. That's not OK.

The waitress made a mistake and called you to cover herself rather than confess her mistake to her manager!

You shouldn’t have paid it. The waitress made a mistake and gave you the wrong food in the wrong place. That’s the hotel’s problem not yours. You need to kick up a fuss and ask for a refund.

The meal won't have been paid for in advance. Your employer will receive a bill for what was eaten.

The waitress should not have bothered you. She should have told the manager, been reminded of the rules and the manager should have drawn a line under it.

But as soon as you said "We took a seat in the bar" I knew that was probably wrong.

You must have more money than sense

Ask to speak to a manager. Explain the situation and ask for your money to be refunded as this was their mistake other yours. They should do this no problem. The waitress should not have bothered you

I’d definitely bring this up with the hotel reception before you leave. The mistake was theirs, therefore you should not have been asked to pay
