racism during england match tonight....

So they have a 3 step rule against racism but didn’t manage to get past the 1st step despite persistent racist chants in the second half.

I cannot believe that dehumanising non-whites is still a thing today.

AIBU that there needs to be a much tougher stance against racism?

I agree. I said to dh what are they going to do, why doesn't FIFA set some boundaries (like all walk off) and he said they did. Didn't see any evidence of it tonight. If the fans lost out they'd soon put a stop to it - either themselves or people they hear

I think that the consequences of chanting racist abuse should automatically mean that the relevant team loses the match. Can’t see any other way to make it clearer to these ignorant people that this despicable behaviour isn’t acceptable!

I was also incredulous that there is still a large contigent of (fairly young) people who think and act like that. Not that its excusable for older people but i guess i wrongly assumed times had changed.
I said to DH what would have happened if England refused to play the 2nd half.

That's no deterrent when you're as shit as Bulgaria are at the moment, and it's obvious from the start that you're going to get stuffed. It might even encourage racism as fans try to get the game abandonned to prevent an even heavier defeat.

Kicking them out of the tournament and the next one as well is what I think should happen.

Fifa don’t really care. The Bulgarian fans did the same in June. From the BBC

‘Bulgaria supporters were found guilty of racist behaviour against Kosovo and the Czech Republic in their Euro 2020 qualifiers.

Uefa ordered that 5,000 of the 46,340 seats at the Vasil Levski stadium in Sofia be blocked off for the game with England and 3,000 against the Czech Republic next month.’

‘ In August, Bulgarian club sides PFC Levski Sofia and PFC Lokomotiv Plovdiv were punished by Uefa for racism during Europa League games.’

What’s Fifa going to do next? Send a strongly worded letter?

Do as the IAAF have done to Russia for doping - complete ban.

There is no grey area here, it’s all on camera, should be immediate ban from the current Euros and the following World Cup. If that makes the players angry then they know where to place the blame, with their own supporters.

This is becoming a common occurrence and paltry fines and a slapped wrist are not working.
But it’s FIFA so I’m not holding my breath.

Uefa are absolute cocksombles and will do nothing as usual. Even during the disgusting monkey chants and nazi salutes during the match, they reported back that it was ‘isolated’ so they wouldn’t stop the match, and their shitty 3 step protocol is absolute bollocks. They’d rather fine a player for haveing a logo on his pants than do something proactive for once. Those Bulgarian fans weren’t a case of a few bad apples. They need serious punishment.

What’s stopping uefa, fifa or whatever football body from taking a zero tolerance approach? Racism in football has been ongoing for decades now and here we are today, still trying to figure out how much racism should be tolerated before a pathetic 3 step approach gets executed.

It does my head in and I find it really distasteful that FIFA say things like they have a zero tolerance policy on it, when clearly they don’t.

Games behind closed doors, instant stadium bans and throwing teams out of tournaments with no exception or appeal would be no tolerance.
Saying “well look into it” is not.

I feel sorry for the actual team playing, but to stamp this out Bulgarian fans should not be permitted to watch any game. No ticket sales and no fans. The authorities were crap I agree.

I think throwing teams out of tournaments will have the quickest effect.

I also think that more needs to be done in the UK to stamp out racism in football.

Sadly, Fifa and the likes don't care a jot.
Its not that long ago that 'fans' and i use that word in the loosest of senses, as real fans wouldn't be so lacking of brain cells, used to throw banana's at black players.
Disgusting behaviour which the powers that be appear to be happy to allow to continue.

I agree with pp that matches behind closed doors or banning teams from tournaments would be the most effective punishments.

In a word? Money.

If they were to take a zero tolerance approach then pretty much ever country/league would be punished. There's no chance fifa/uefa/the fa are going to ban the big countries or teams from competing and they can't apply a different standard to smaller nations/teams. So instead we have the system of small fines and occasional closed door games.

Tbh though I find all this 'outrage' very hypocritical. Remember it was only last year that Sterling was racially abused by Chelsea fans and Aubameyang had a banana thrown at him in epl games, so until we can sort our own country out I'm not sure we really have the right to be demanding other countries face sanctions.

I would like to visit Eastern Europe and the balkan states but this is the reason why I don't. I'm not white but I'm British but it won't make a difference to these people. It's disgusting and frightening that after all these years and the WW2, the racism is alive & kicking stronger than before.

Bulgaria should be kicked out and I don't agree with the 'unfortunately men will be men' comment above. This is racist behaviour and it's choice behaviour. These thugs actively choose to make Nazi salutes and monkey chants. By saying men will be men, you are minimising racist criminal behaviour. It's like saying men can't help themselves and they are all racist, no not all men are racist. Some people, men and women, choose to be racist and bigoted and some choose to display criminal racist behaviour.

I’m mixed race British, and I was on the receiving end of racism in Bosnia a few years ago - from the authorities.

It has put me off returning to Eastern Europe. There are plenty of other places I can go instead, the world is a big place.

The game was stopped twice
The first time a pa announcement was made warning them.
The referee spoke to England the second time just before half time.
The bulgarian captain spoke to fans at half time.
A large group of the worst were ejected at half time.

To say uefa/ referee did nothing is dishonest
