CF at checkout Poundland, AIBU?

On the way home I decided to stop by Poundland to buy a few things with DS3, I'm standing in the cashier queue, the lady before me decides to go to the self service machine, I move closer to the cashier. The woman at the self service needs assistance, and instead of calling for help she just stands there and waits. The cashier is dealing with another woman, and I'm next. And the woman at the self service machine has noticed that the cashier is nearly done with the other woman before me and decided to stand and wait at the self service machine, now the cashier is done with the other customer and I move closer to put my items down, she does the same and says 'I was before you' I tell her it's not my fault the self service machine isn't working and you should have called for help, she says it doesn't matter, I was still before you. I ignore her, and pay. She then shouts at me " what a great example you are for your child"

AIBU?

I don't see the issue to be fair but it's good to have a moan every now and again

This is the shops fault for not having staff manning the self serve tills

Are you supposed to yell out HELP! when you need it in a shop? Or does the light flash on the till and someone is supposed to come over?

What was she supposed to do, go to the back of the queue? The machines have lights flashing above to alert staff to a problem, it’s not up to customers to shout for help, or stand there indefinitely waiting for a member of staff.

Ugh can't stand things like this. She was in the wrong. 100%

Not sure how I feel, I’d be annoyed in her situation but I’d probably just ask the staff member to come over instead of pushing in

Having said that, she was an absolute CF for saying that.

Poundland should have more than one cashier! I don’t think anybody is at fault really, just an annoying situation.

Well she was before you so i guess you coulda helped her out

I think I might be mildly irritated but honestly I really couldn't get worked up about that.

She was ott but I would have let her in as she was before you in the queue. I think she was rude but you were the CF

What was she supposed to do, go to the back of the queue?

Yes. You leave the queue you don't get to just jump back in when you fancy it.

YANBU. Most people dont stand there like a lemon, a "Sorry this isnt working" to the cashier would have caught her attention quicker. But saying that she would have still been sorted before the cashier served you, so meh. Just an annoying situation.

It’s Poundland’s fault. Tbh I’m amazed they had someone on the till at all! My local one has 4 permanently staffless proper tills and 3 self service tills. One of which hasn’t taken cash in over a year. Another doesn’t give receipts and guaranteed there will always be one out of order. You’ll be standing in a queue 20 deep and the only staff member to be seen is standing at the top of the queue offering biscuits (on sale) to everyone in the queue knowing film well they just want to be fucking served! What’s the point in offering me biscuits I can’t fucking pay for?? If I take them will you open a till and let me pay?

It is Poundland, it is hardly like it would have taken that long for her to go through. If she had been in the original queue behind you you would have a point, but she was correct that she was there first.

Then again I am one who lets people nip in the queue in front of me if they have less shopping.

And you thought this was worth starting a thread for?
Total non-issue. Good manners would suggest you let her in front of you.

You leave the queue, you have to rejoin. That is surely the basics of queuing?

I don't think she did leave the queue or jump back in where she fancied it. The way I see it:

  • She was next in line to buy something at Poundland.
  • the till didn't work, so she waited patiently for the only available member of staff to be available.
  • when that member of staff became available she made them aware the till didn't work and tried to make her transaction.
  • op argued.

Whilst I understand it could be irritating for the next person in line to have to wait another minute or two, I don't think the first shopper should miss her turn and do the whole queue again because the shop was at fault

I would have got the attention of the server and let her know there was an issue.

I’m not in so much of a hurry I can’t help someone out, especially if she had actually have been in front of me. I can’t believe anyone would be so arsey about it.

As far as I am concerned if you have left the queue for any reason you go to the back

CircleofWillis · 09/10/2019 19:38

If there was only one queue I think yabu. She was ahead of you and would have been the next to be served by the cashier if she hadn't decided to try the self service which wasn't working for whatever reason.

I think it would be unfair for you to expect her to go to the back of the queue when she had already cued.

What, when you’re already being served but haven’t been able to complete the transaction through no fault of your own?

I think you are being unreasonable. You saw she needed help and she was before you- my instant reaction to this would have been ‘that lady needs help’ and put my items down and wait for the cashier to return.

Why is common courtesy so hard to find these days?

She was rude to you and that is unreasonable but tbh, I wish more people would speak up to others entitlement.

I think if you leave the queue, tough luck!
