To wonder why people go on the same holiday every year?

Like my dad...bless him. Same holiday, hotel, tours, same experiences. I am fully prepared to get flamed as i know that people find what works for them but it is a vast world out there and isn't is nice to explore?. Hard hat on.
For eg...dad always goes to Rome....amazing...lucky him... but when i suggest Paris he sounds very uncertain. He goes to Rome for the art...but there is tons in Paris. I just feel like he's missing out on experiences before he gets too old to do them.

We go to the same place every year. We go for the surf and the community there. We're not so interested in traveling the world and doing the touristy stuff, when we want a break we just want to catch some waves and relax.

Maybe just feels a connection with the place. He's going because wants to be there and not somewhere else.

There's a place in the world that I lived for a while and where I still feel totally at home, I can't live there now but I go as often as I can (not every year unfortunately). Its not about wanting to be anywhere but wanting to be there.

I think many of us so desperately look forward to our holidays that it minimises any risk of anything going wrong if you stick with a tried and tested place where you know everything will be just what you like.

We go to a family villa Grin

Even so, we do different things every time (apart from must dos like my favourite restaurant in the world etc) - plenty of different stuff to do even with the same base.

Shocking news just in ... different people like different things.

My DD and I go to the same place in Majorca for a girly week every May where we relax in surroundings that we are familiar with we love the area and will spend days going on bus trips to other area's.
With OH we go mostly long haul to differant places in September where we spend 2 weeks enjoying new experiences.
I think your dad feels comfortable in Rome and likes to feel he knows his way around you can always find something different to do in Rome its breathtaking.

Going back to the same place repeatedly can take away a lot of the uncertainty and stress involved in planning that would be needed to get the best out of somewhere new, which makes it easier and more of a break.

Also, there could be so much art in Rome that he hasn't seen all of it properly yet. After all, it would take 100 days to see everything in the Louvre, even if you only spent 30 seconds looking at every painting. Maybe Rome is similar?

We've been diving multiple times in Gozo, Malta and Lanzarote and will go back to all three, because we feel like we haven't scratched the surface of what is available, or fully appreciated the dive sites we've been to multiple times, and we like all three islands and know what is on offer and where we like to stay.

We usually go to Cornwall on holiday. We like it, know we're going to have a good time and now we've got a dog, can bring her with us.

How other people to spend their holiday is up to them.

Have you been to Rome OP?

It would take years of holidaying there every year to see every site.

We go to same place every year. We know the locals, we use the transport system with ease. We can walk around the place like home, know where everything is and feel safe and relax.

I’ve done so recently- last 4/5 years.

It minimises the risk of it being shit. And when you’re using your annual leave, laying thousands of pounds and it’s precious family time that’s important

At the moment I have young children and we feel we need certain things from a holiday. Holidays have become less about adventuring and exploring and more about resting and recharging. For that reason I want to know that the hotel has everything we want, the local area suits us, the tourist attractions suit us etc etc

It’s the familiarity of it all. Same as the sun bed brigade who spend their holiday lying on a bed by the pool. I’ve never been back to the same place twice, because there’s still too many places to see before I die. I want excitement & new adventures, I want the unknown, I don’t want to sit with couples from the UK who go to Beni thrice a year to make friends, I can do that at home, I want to meet local people. Come & get me Halo

Sorry but what does it matter to you what people do?

Some people who go to the same place make friends there, and it becomes like a second home and a second community.

I do try different places, but at the same time I also have places that I like to keep going back to. I have a wonderful time every time, and never think "this is getting old now.." so why should I go somewhere else just for the sake of it, just because it annoys some random on the internet for god knows what reason?

We go to the same place or did before it got too much because we have autistics in the family. Familiar surroundings etc did help for a while.

I think if you're viewing your holiday as a time to have new experiences and see new places then that's different to how some people view them.

We went to the same place 3 years in a row. Nothing flashy, but it was near the Med, had our own apartment, warm weather guaranteed, knew the kids would love it. The appeal? To relax and enjoy being together without the stresses of school/work/housework. Packing was easy, no research needed.

Lots of sleep, lots of sitting around the pool, lots of time at the sea, eating out, a drive out to a few places.

At a time when my personal life was not great, it was exactly what me and my sons needed - to make the very most of the 2 weeks we had.

This year we did do something more adventurous and that was also great, but more of an adventure than a real rest if you know what I mean.

I always thought the same

But then I had kids. And I found somewhere that's cheap, short flights, short transfer times, hot but not horribly hot, 100m from the nice safe beach, a 10 min walk to restaurants

I know from previous experience I just cant find all those things unless we pay significantly more. I think when the kids are older I wont mind so much if the sea is a bit more rough or if the flight is longer or it's a longer walk into the town but at the moment it's just so convenient that we have booked the exact same holiday again next year

Errr... because they like it there?

My mum and dad go to salou every year. They like it there, know where the things they like are, they even have a 'local' and know some other people who go there.

There you go, double whammy on the holiday snobbery front.

Because we love it and haven't stayed anywhere else like it. Every year we ask ourselves if maybe it's time to move on, and every year we decide to go at least once more. I am ready to try some different places, but not if it means stopping this one. Maybe one year we'll have a terrible time and be ready to move on, but it hasn't happened yet.

I go to York every year for a mini break, on my own. I love it more every time I visit. I plan to visit every year for the rest of my life, and possibly retire there. I couldn't give a hoot what others think. Its my time, my money and I don't travel to see new places, I travel to do what I love. And what I love is mooching round York.

Yup. We go to the same place in Crete every year - I think it's seven years now. I can drive from the airport to the hotel without sat nav at this point. The car rental guy knows what we need without us even asking. Likewise the hotel. I know where to buy what we need for the holiday. I know what we can do with DD without thinking twice about it. And there are still plenty of restaurants/villages/beaches to explore that we've not been to yet.

I'm not at a point in my life where I value spontaneity and the unknown.

I couldn’t give a second thought to the fact that people go to the same place every year.
I mean what impact does it have on my life?

(In other words, I'm in "holiday mode" from the moment the plane touches down.)

A holiday is not synoymous with exploring.

One day, I would love to travel and see the world, but right now, i just need a low cost, family friendly break.

I used to think the same. Until, twenty years ago, me and my then boyfriend (sort of as we were just seeing each other casually, not exclusive) went on an "allocation on arrival"
holiday.

We were allocated to a small town, right by the beach, on a Greek Island. It was absolutely idyllic. Busy enough to have plenty of traditional tavernas, bars, little shops. Gorgeous scenery, food to die for, lovely beach with calm shallow waters and THE most friendliest people I've ever met.

We've been going every year since, sometimes twice a year. Been married for 19years now with a 12yr old DS who loves it as much as us.

We are firm friends as many, eat with them socially, been to wedding out of season (now THAT is something to behold!)

They've seen us as partners, engaged, pregnant and watched DS grow. The two young brothers we met in their late teens/early twenties are now grown ups with their own little families.

When we go it's like going home. No stress, we know exactly what holiday we'll have.

We've been other places alongside (Spain, US, Egypt, other Greek Isles) and enjoyed them but it's not the same and not where our hearts are.

Come DS leaving home and self sufficient, we plan to spend April-October there and the rest in the UK.

We have in the past gone to the same place/ hotel for a few years in a row because we know and are confident in what we're going to get and we want to feel confident in the fact that we can just relax. Especially when the children were really small. We didn't want to worry about what food there was, or what the rooms were like. Obviously there was the first time and then we had so much fun, everyone enjoyed it, why wouldn't you want to go back?
