To not answer my front door and ignore any knocking?

I’m as anti social as you can get. I have to interact with people at work but when I’m at home I want to be left alone.

In the past I’ve rushed out of the shower to answer the door to someone who turned out to be selling double glazing. I’ve stopped mid bake and washed my hands etc to answer the door to someone pushing religion. I’ve cut short telephone calls to answer the door to someone pushing a political agenda. A few months ago I decided I will no longer answer the door unless I’m actually expecting someone. I’m sick of it. This is my home, my “space” and I want to be left alone!!

I now ignore all knocks unless I’m expecting someone, including ignoring the parcel man wanting to take shit in for next door. I’m sick of that too, he should arrange delivery for when he’s actually home.

Recently a little lad has been asking to come around and play with my dogs. At first him mum used to text me first but now he just turns up so I’ve started ignoring him too. It’s tea time, DH has just got in from work and the dogs are settled. I don’t want to be disturbed and answering the door, even to tell him no sets the dogs off and disturbs my dinner.

AIBU?

You're not unreasonable to ignore cold callers at all... Gets on my goat too.
Could you get one of the 'no cold callers' signs for your door? Stop them knocking in the first place.
I'd also talk to the child's parents, let them know its not convenient for him to knock on

YANBU - I hate answering the door! It’s always people selling something or random bored kids or a delivery for my dick neighbours 😂

Bartyy Tue 10-Sep-19 19:50:33

Don’t want to offend the neighbour but our kids are grown up and left home ... we don’t want to be spending our time entertaining someone else’s child when we get home from work! You’d think they’d realise this without us having to say anything

DoolinEnnis Tue 10-Sep-19 19:52:33

Yanbu at all.

You are definitely not BU! I often ignore the door if I'm not expecting anyone. Your home, your time, your rules.

I never answer my door unless I am expecting someone! Even hearing a knock on the door gives me the rage!

Drogosnextwife Tue 10-Sep-19 20:01:42

I hate answering the door even when I'm expecting someone. Once my kids are grown up and leave the nest, I'm going to move to the country, have a big long drive that I can see people coming up so I've got time to decide whether to answer the door or not.

I look out my window first if I'm not expecting a parcel or dont recognize the person i.dont answer the door

JollyRocker Tue 10-Sep-19 20:03:00

It’s your home! You should be able to enjoy some peace and quiet so no you’re not at all BU. FWIW I regularly ignore the door, if it’s a parcel I’m expecting I often ask from an upstairs window for the delivery person to leave it on my doorstep. I’m in a townhouse and if I’m on the top floor I don’t want to bust a gut or worse fall down the stairs trying to get there in the five seconds they give me before sodding off back to their van. I’ll come down when I’m ready!

YANBU, totally ignore.
I'm saving up for a camera so I can see who is at the front door so I can decide whether to answer it or not.

Horsemad Tue 10-Sep-19 20:05:55

My neighbours do this. The neighbours on the other side of them are appalled! 😆

FabLaura Tue 10-Sep-19 20:09:32

No. Do what's right for you. If it's an emergency, you'll have missed calls too. This is from someone who also ignores the door wink

Ivalueloyaltyaboveallelse Tue 10-Sep-19 20:11:54

Sadly I often have to do this now, as my next door neighbours children continually knock the door even when I inform them my DC are ill or doing other activities.

I never answer my door unless I am expecting someone. Luckily I live in a flat with an intercom, unless I recognise whoever's is buzzing, I don't let them in.

Jayaywhynot Tue 10-Sep-19 20:16:41

I never answer the door, family and friends know the door will be unlocked aif I'm in and will walk in, everyone else is ignored

TantrumToddler Tue 10-Sep-19 20:24:37

Def not unreasonable, CF the lot of them! We used to have a sign up saying no junk mail, no charities, no cold callers etc. It worked fine until recently one evening when someone came round banging on the door wanting to tell us all about her amazing new Slimming World class... and woke the kids up I'd spent over an hour settling angry I went to point angrily at the sign and realised it had gone! So someone somewhere has nicked our little sign, god knows why. They're just from amazon/eBay so maybe give it a try.

BetweenTheMoon Tue 10-Sep-19 20:35:44

I HATE people intruding on me when I'm home so only answer the door when I'm expecting someone. If I want to see or talk to people I go out. If I'm home, I want time away from people!

GabsAlot Tue 10-Sep-19 20:38:05

I ignore the door im not expecting anyone noone just pops round without telling me first so its always cold callers or jw

BigFluffyCatWhiskers Tue 10-Sep-19 20:41:23

Yep. We don't answer the door unless we know who it is or we are expecting a delivery. The last time we did it was Conservative Party canvassers. No thank you.

Same for phones - landline and mobile. Don't know the number? We don't answer. If it was important they'd leave a voicemail. They never do.

CendrillonSings Tue 10-Sep-19 20:45:19

The video entryphone is your friend smile

missmouse101 Tue 10-Sep-19 20:47:27

Not unreasonable at all, but please can I just say that if you have had a letter from the Office for National Statistics explaining that an interviewer (me!) will be calling the following week, please can you not ignore them! Otherwise, I'm with you OP!

abitoflight Tue 10-Sep-19 20:49:09

YANBU
I'm not going to answer door in my dressing gown or rush and put clothes on if I'm having a nap
I look out of window and ignore if I don't them and not expecting delivery

vintagesewingmachine Tue 10-Sep-19 20:49:42

Dieu Tue 10-Sep-19 20:52:31

Well, I find it very odd, but clearly I'm in the minority there!
