The knives are out for the royal family

It may be deserved in some cases, however it would seem the gloves are off as far as the media are concerned. They have lived high on the hog for centuries so what is new?

Am scratching my head here is it shoot the royal family season or a smoke and mirrors exercise designed to distract us from something more important??

I would hate to be in the PR business with the RF just now.

As long as I've been alive, the royal family have been in the news on a daily basis/weekly basis back in the day...

Why what’s happened now? I’ve not noticed anything but maybe I don’t read the right newspaper

God yes, don't you remember Freebie Fergie the Duchess of Pork and all those names she got called? Air Miles Andy? (bet he'd love to be called just Air Miles Andy right now....)

It's August- slow news month so you're likely noticing it more. It has always been this way, but at some times of year it feels worse as there is nothing else going on

The BBC lunchtime made it their headline re: Andrew and Epstein. which set off my thinking, tabloids print everything and everything when the BBC say something I sit up and notice.

Well isn't it more that they are doing/saying stupid things and getting called out on them? I'm not sure the knives are out specifically, just that certain members of the RF are behaving hypocritically?
As others have pointed out, t'was always thus but the immediacy of social media and the internet means that almost as soon as one of them display what's perceived as bad behaviour, it is fair game for public criticism.
Displays of privilege, entitlement and hypocrisy aren't wise in times like these.
Are they a bit thick I wonder?

They’re always in the press - sometimes for ‘blunders’ sometimes just because there are nice pictures of them - but these allegations are incredibly serious and not like the usual fuck ups - of course they’ll be reported. If you are photographed in the home of a convicted paedophile and you’re a royal I don’t think it’s a ‘head scratcher’ why the press would have an interest.

They have had a good run of it.

It is 2019, It is time for them ALL to go and live as private citizens.

Nothing is more annoying than the rich and powerful lecturing us about being eco.

@secondaccount hah yes, back in the day when the worst of your problems was being called Airmiles Andy

I hope so. Harry and Megan are hypocrites and Andy, well I’d suggest everyone checks the news. Posts on here tend to get deleted.

I don’t remember them having a good thing to say about Andrew since the Falklands tbh. Considering the type of company he’s been keeping he should be investigated.

I suspect the Epstein thing has gotten to the point where it can't be ignored anymore. They've been successfully distancing themselves from that scandal for many years but it's now at the point where they really can't.

I I really like MM and Prince Harry and the relentless bashing of Meghan is awful.

But even I'm now thinking "Jesus wept, what are you doing????"

I get wanting privacy, but then don't go and be guest editor at Vogue, on their biggest issue of the year, harping on about the environment, Prince Harry interview with Jane Goodall titled "a candid conversation about environment, responsibility and climate change" and then go and jump on three different private jets in literally the space of two weeks, if that.

What. The. Fuck. are the they thinking?? What are their advisors doing? I'm fairly sure business class with BA to both Nice and Ibiza are suitable

They are now a hypocritical laughing stock

And as for Andrew. He will have a hard time explaining what he was doing cosied up in Epstein's "house of horrors" in Manhattan, AFTER Epstein had already been found guilty of all kinds of awful things.

Are the royal family just not accountable to anyone these days?? It feels like it.

I don't think the knives are out any more than they every have been. But Andrew has been seen to be in a pretty compromising set of circumstances involving a convicted sex trafficker hasn't he? So I'd say some press comment is fair enough in this case.

Mabel

Exactly my thoughts on Harry and Meghan. I’ve so far thought the media are being harsh on them. But you really can’t argue with the facts on their environmental stance and the private jets!

Why are all the threads about the royal family getting taken down? I think there are really important discussions to be had on the arrogance and, in one case, malfeasance of the RF. We should be able to talk about it!

Mango - I totally agree. I think this infantilising by MNHQ is appalling. Treating us like children. What’s the point in a site like this if adults can’t have these important discussions.

@whettam - distract from no deal Brexit, the impending recession (to be blamed on Brexit), impending war with Iran? Or just the state pension age going up to 75?

@Pamplemousecat @MangoFeverDream
Agree completely. These are absolutely discussions we should be allowed to have. The monarchy should NOT be above criticism. Even the media don’t seem afraid of criticising them, so what’s the issue in mumsnet?

Thing is, they can be hypocritical laughing stocks all they want. We bankroll them and there's fuck all we can do about it. Andrew will get away with what he's done because that's how the rich roll.
