AIBU?

Berated for buying a bottle of water

Went for a day out with another family yesterday and I stopped on the way to buy some water as I had forgotten to take mine from the fridge. I spent the rest of the day being lectured to by my friend about plastic use and the environment, all of which I am fully aware of and do my best to limit plastic use but this was a one off and I did recycle the bottle/ Then I was chastised for eating meat (packed ham sandwiches) as her family have all gone vegetarian to save the planet, although her DD said it was because some celebrity said it helped with weight lossHmm

I didn't like to point out that her avocado salad probably wasn't as green as she thought, having been flown half way across the world in plastic packaging and was possibly responsible for deforestation in South America. This is the same person that thinks walking and public transport is for peasants and makes the even shortest journey to the corner shop in a Range Rover. The same person that takes several long haul trips a year.

AIBU to not want to be lectured to about the environment by hypocrites like this?

They wouldn't be a "friend" of mine any longer. I don't need some self-righteous, sanctimonious twat blabbering their bullshit at me. Life is far too short for that nonsense.

She's obviously a sheep that has no brains or opinions of her own.
Otherwise, she would know that her own behaviour is not fully compliant with environmental clean living.
You should have told her the things you've told us, regarding range rover etc.
What do you want from this thread?
We can't give you a backbone.

Why didn't you point all that out to her, stand up for yourself

Don’t you mean “my former friend”? Agree, you should have told her.

Sick of the Meghan Markle bashing

You are doing your best to stand by your green principles, but do not take any lecturing from anyone, that left the building the day you became an adult with your own mind and views.

As a pp said, life is too short to have to deal with sanctimonious asshats.

Ignore and block. Wow, delighted I got to say that marvellous phrase at last!

Is there a problem with plastic bottles provided you recycle them really?

No not Megan Grin Agree I should have said more but it was a day out with DCs and didn't want an argument. She is part of a group of mum friends from DDs primary that I am thankfully seeing less and less of as now they are at secondary. They are all very 'woke' if it's socially trendy but completely clueless in reality.

I wouldn’t have been able to keep my mouth shut. Would have smiled sweetly and told her about her avocado and Range Rover.

I am amused how it is some really privileged people who point out oh your using a plastic bottle or blah blah blah when its probable that they have a higher carbom footprint with the gas guzzlers they drive and the many holidays they take flying around the world. I know someone who has recently joined the revolution and I got so sick of her on her high horse, I reminded her that she uses disposable nappies and wipes and cut down many trees in her garden and got rid of her grass and takes 5 holidays abroad each year! I have no time for the fanatics of this new woke religion who look down on people.

The advice is 'reduce, reuse, recycle'. There isn't an expectation that you can completely eliminate plastic on your life in 2019.

I would love to know how she recycles all those carbon emissions from her long haul flights....

Life's too short to be lectured by a sanctimonious hypocrite, OP.
Next time, let rip with your thoughts, as above!
You''ll get all the satisfaction of bursting her ignorant, self-serving little bubble, & she may never speak to you again.
Sorted!

You should have pointed out the hypocrisy.

I have absolutely zero tolerance for self-righteous, sanctimonious preachy people, particularly if they are hypocrites themselves. In your position I would have slapped your ‘friend’ down as firmly as necessary. If she took offence, tough.

Reduce, reuse and then recycle.

Buying bottled water is a really poor choice, considering we live in a country with clean water coming out of the taps. I wouldn't say something to a friend who decided to buy water on a day out. But I'd be judging her/him for not bringing a refillable bottle from home.

Why didn’t you point out your observations

Needn’t by eastenders style shouting. Just calmly pointing out that some of her actions aren’t in line with what she’s preaching to you

Yes YABU

You spent the whole day being 'lectured' rather than telling her about her avocado and the public transport thing etc.

At the very least you could have told her to stop going on about it.

There's no point in posting on MN asking if you're BU not to want to be lectured by a hypocrite because the answer is a no brainer.

I didn't like to point out that .....

Why didn’t you though?
You can’t complain about somebody else’s behaviour when you let them get away with it.

She sounds a tedious hypocrite - life's too short for being 'friends' with someone who judges you for buying a bottle of water
